Can 2 AAA Shooters Coexist on the Market???

Much has been said about the PLAYSTATION 3 since it has been released. Critics have often attempted to say that there is a lack of quality titles available for the console. With this in mind the same critics have stated that Sony would be doing itself a disservice if it were to allow the release of Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 within the same quarter. Some have reported that Sony has confirmed plans to do this, but have since been debunked. (See here). My question to this is: What is the problem with releasing 2 AAA shooters in close proximity to each other?

I could start this argument by stating that this was not a problem when Mass Effect and Bioshock were released on another console, but that would be an unnecessary point. Instead I’ll ask you a simple question, if you are gamer and you are presented with a must have game what would you do? I’m guessing you would buy if you are interested. Let me tell you a quick bit about these upcoming titles, and you let me know if they peak your interest?

Resistance 2 as you know will be the sequel to the PS3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man. It will continue the story of Nathan Hale and will look to improve on all of the things that made the original great, in addition to fixing the things that held the original back. There will be an emphasis on the online aspects of the game as well. There will 64 player death matches and an 8 player online co-op mode. This is in addition to the various community features the game will offer including interactivity with myresistance.net. If you played the original, then you know this game is a must have.

Killzone 2 is 3rd entry in the Killzone series. Not much is currently known about the title other than it is continuing the story of Killzone and you will on the Helghast world, Helghan. You will take the role of Sev and will be able to take advantage of the new “Lean and Peak” cover system. So far all of the footage of this game has been simply amazing. The first entry in this series was a solid title that attempted to push the PS2 to its limits. It was followed by Killzone: Liberation for the PSP, which remains a popular title to this day. The amount of time and money that is being invested by Sony and Guerilla Games would cause one to believe that this will be a great title.

So are you interested? I know I am. Not only am I interested in both titles, I will definitely be purchasing both titles whenever they are released. Both will offer unique experiences that go beyond the gameplay, but extend to the story as well. Something that every shooter cannot say.

Sony would be giving gamers the opportunity to enjoy two great games in a relatively short amount of time. This in addition to silencing those that say that the PS3 doesn’t have must have titles. I already see several titles that I believe are must haves on the PS3, these 2 will only add to that. I’m putting my money aside for this early. Will you be doing the same?

It’s not a problem of whether fans WANT to buy it, but I bet you’ve come to a situation where you can only buy one game, or you really only want to spend one one game and are forced to CHOOSE between 2 AAA Games. If, however, games were released in different quarters, you could buy one independantly, and then wait a few months, gather some money, and get the other.

  2. sev1512 says:

Well during the holiday season its hard to afford all the AAA games.
So when you narrow it down, its hard to pick 2 games from the same genre.
But these 2? Definitely worth purchasing both. Even with all the other AAA PS3 games due out around that time.

  3. marc says:

Sorry to be a bitch, but this sounds like it was written by a four-teen year old, and then proof read a couple times.
Why didn’t the writer just compare Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4? weren’t they in the exact same time frame that KZ2 and R2 are?
And all this shiz about these games going beyond the gameplay and story, please don’t blow air out of your ass, we haven’t seen much a KZ2, actually very little, so don’t make yourself and others promises that can’t be backed,I know you’re trying to validate your purchase of a PS3 by toting these games a brilliant, but really, how well has 60 pl online worked in a shooter?

  4. not says:

Mass Effect a shooter? Halo its a shooter and nobody released other shooters during the halo fever…

  5. Miko says:

Marc, I’m sorry to be a bitch, but you sound like 14 year old….I bet your a X-bot!!!… The reason why it is not plausible to compare COD4 and Halo3 is because Halo3 was an extremely hyped game. Even though COD sold well, no one though that it would even compare to Halo3. Whereas Bioshock and Masseffect were in the same league.
Talking about Killzone2, it is true that not much is know, but whatever is known is mind blowing. Think about it. Before much was known about Masseffect, or even Too human, the games were already declared to be Big….
Next time please take your Fanboyism some place else..Actually….dont take it anywhere…No one wants assholes like you

  6. sev1512 says:

    I agree with Miko…
Didn’t anyone teach you, Marc?… If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say it at all.

  7. MARC IS AN IDOIT says:

marc no one needs to validate their purchase of a PS3 it has already won the format war over HD discs and has games like KZ2 and R2 coming out as well as GT5 while Microsoft has already released their Halo 3 and that has done them a lot of good hasnt it!

  8. Bryant says:

Listen anyone who cant admit that R2 and KZ2 along with MGS and grand tourismo in the SAME YEAR WONT SELL PS3′s and wont be enjoyable is rediculous. GAMES LIKE THIS SELL AND THERE SYSTEM MOVERS… MARC DONT BLOW YOUR HORN TO HARD BUDDY YOU DONT KNOW WTH YOUR TALKING ABOUT!!!! =) lol

  9. anthonyv says:

these 2 games are already epic.
i don’t care when they’re released either, even if on the same day, i will be buying them both even if i have to rob a corner store.

  10. marc says:

    Tough luck Miko
Actually I don’t own a game console, but I’m smart enough to look at how people compare games, and write essays.
Woah buddy, well backed, I must say! this was my favorite “Talking about Killzone2, it is true that not much is know, but whatever is known is mind blowing”. yeah wow, I can’t argue that, not at all, but wait….what is known? not much, because you can’t seem to think of anything. This game looks fun, sure thing, but until I see something that actually proves this “mind blown” game you speak of, I’m not going to back a game that hasn’t done anything new.
My point was, Halo 3 and COD4 both sold very well, and in the same time frame, and both were AAA. And consider that M.E and B.s are aimed at different audiences, one is a…wait for it….RPG and the other is a…its coming…..sci fi shooter, boy oh boy, that was hard to hear wasn’t it?
Both KZ2 and R2 are shooters, and fairly similar, both use down barrel shooting, as well as promised “amazing” cinematics, etc.
So in conclusion, both these games are similar, and only on PS3, seeing as most FPS gamers lean to the 360, and that these games will sell well, but not great, maybe over time though. Neither game is highly hyped outside of the Sony community.
Nope, sell just fine, but not a COD4 or even a Bioshock.

  11. ZeroOnyx says:

Bring on the fragging, I’ll be pre-ordering both & be online with both as will I be bringing my clan [=Z=] Zephyr with me. I don’t care when they come out (same day or within a month or 2 of each other). AAA is AAA, and every true fragger with have them both no matter the cost.

  12. marc says:

So, to the writer, my words were harsh. Obviously this article was written on the fly, as this news was just released. And all in all, it makes a good argument, but this should only be representative of the PS community, and it looks as if it was written on a playstation something site, so it makes sense.
If anyone else still wants to debate anything else I have said, you’re more than welcome to try to find a counter argument, best of luck.

  13. Wow says:

Wow marc, my question is, how can you ligetimately argue against gaming consoles, or gaming in general if you have no console? Sure, you can read all you want but you are only getting opinions from mostly fanboys. O and believe me when I say that you can find plenty of gameplay footage from K2 on youtube. Have fun on youtube!!!

  14. Kyle says:

    Marc,

I won’t be as rude as these people here, but I think you will find that the tactic in question beign used by Sony is exactly what Microsoft was trying to do by acquiring so many JRPG/RPG titles .

Sony would love some mindless Halo players to see a choice of games with superior multiplayer (60 player online) this fall when it’s decidely quiet for the 360, and feel the need to go and ask for a PS3 this Christmas or spend some money in fall as an ever popular early Christmas present.

Anyway, I genuinely think that is why it’s sensible to bring the games out at the same time. Gives choice, if you can afford both at that time, then you can get both, atleast the library is expanded. But otherwise you buy the otehr title as soon as you can afford it.

  15. Tony Scarboni says:

Comparing COD4 and HALO isn’t the same as KZ2 and R2 because COD4 is multiplatform. Although MassEffect is more of a RPG than an FPS.

Anyways, Im kinda peeved about this news because I wanted Sony to bridge the gap between Summer and the holiday season a little better. Im sorry, but Haze, Gt5, and MG5 might not be enough to hold me over.

  16. James says:

Is no-one worried slightly about how laggy a 60 player deatchmatch will be ????

Also will the 60 people miss-guided enough to buy a ps3 all be online at the same time ???

  17. chrisrahosiris says:

I’m not going to say that I’m not worried about lag. I just believe in the quality of Insomniac’s work. I could easily see them making a 64 player death match not only fluid, but also no overwhelming. We will get a better indication of how it is shaping up as we get closer to the release.

  18. dragonJP says:

Highly doubt that this is even an issue, since it is unlikely both will be released so near each other. Sony wouldn’t want to release two AAA PS3 exclusives in the same genre at or near the same time. Next-gen gaming is not cheap– many PS3 owners will be forced to make a choice between the two. So undoubtably one game will end up suffering. Not to mention there will surely be competition in the same time frame from Microsoft and Nintendo as well. In this generation of games, game releases should be timed more carefully than ever, but many publishers don’t seem to understand this, and as a result many good games have fallen by the wayside sales-wise. Can’t see Sony making such an error in judgement….

  19. Ben B says:

Hi everyone just so you know im no fanboy. I own a 360 and recently bought my PS3. Killzone was average…..until i read reviews im not totally convinced the second one will be anything special….then again it probably will improve…..resistance two feels like im playing a ps2 game….i hate all the fanboys who believe resistance 2 graphics are the best ever….better then crysis….you need to shut up…..metal gear…little big planet….and ff13 gt5 are the games to care about……like i say il read reviews of these….oh and get the agency.

  20. XMARCX says:

truth is MARC that your comparison is about two similar game yes but each game is from a different publisher. that is not true in the case of K2 and R2. both are published by SCE and are being programmed by different coding teams. the important thing is that since both companies are doing similar games at similar times they are at least communicating with one another to avoid clashing ideas or accidentally making the games look or feel too similar. the great thing is that due to this colaberation the two games should be able to stand out from one another and offer unique experiences for many gamers. what i don’t understand is why you would bother to post anything about consoles when you claim to not even own one.

  21. venomcarnage89 says:

Alright the reason this writer is a retard is because he cant comprehend that neither Mass Effect or Biosock had an ONLINE MODE. Of course they sold well, if you beat the game once or twice then trade it in. Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 will be huge in the online modes and if this writer is a gamer at all, right now it seems like a no, he would realize that games online games tend to keep people playing for months an months, so releasing both these titles within like 2 months, i dont think would affect sales much, but it would make people choose between which game to play online, i dont know about all of you, but i really only prefer to be doing on fps online at a time, to try and work and get higher up in rank in that one, i dont like juggling 2 different games. To Marc, your problem was you chose a mulitplatform game(cod 4)

  22. marc says:

I still don’t see how these games will do for PS3, the system itself, and no offense, isn’t great for FPS, i’ve tried Resistance, it to me the joysticks blow. Beyond the point. People haven’t purchased the PS3 to play games like Resistance, or Killzone, face it, so far it’s been used for ( for the most part ) a Blu-ray player, and a machine to wait for MGS4, or GT5p, I’m sure there are kids out there who are very aware of the promises Sony has made about these two games, R2 and KZ2, and those people are probably looking forward to those games, but the audience isn’t as big as the Halos or the COD4.
People bought the 360 just to play Halo 3, lots of people. The people who also bought the 360 were just fine paying that premium for online, and those people enjoy the COD games, it’s also quite possible that people play both these titles, not just one or the other.
I still stand by COD4 and Halo 3, shooters CAN survive in the same time line, and still sell, but the games need to have the audience, and the community that play these games, which the PS3 doesn’t have.
So yeah, really stupid idea for Sony. The library of games would be alot bigger if they were to release them close to each other, but on the PS3 it wouldn’t make sense.
Even if the comparison between H3 and COD4 was a bad one, M.E and B,S was just as silly.

  23. Paladin says:

R2s main competition will be GOW2. Just like when the first ones came out. In my opinion, it was a bad move to have released them so close together because GOW outsold it. I believe it wouldve done better if the release date for the original resistance was at least a month after GOW. History will repeat itself, but Ill be playing both as for KZ2, i have no interest in that game

  24. Job says:

Bioshock is an adventure FPS and Mass Effect is an Action Adventure RPG. Compare useful releases like Halo3 and COD4…N3wb. S0ny is shit.

  25. truth411 says:

Marc you are an idot, there are plenty of awesome games on the Ps3, the argument that Ps3 has no great games died last year!! Have yu played ratchetnClank ??? Nope. Uncharted?? Nope. Warhawk?? Nope. So take your ignorant, no console owning self some place else and thats the truth.

  26. Resistance61513 says:

    Resistance 2 looks orgasmic!

I’m not buying any games until these two come out! God I can’t wait!

Oh and by the way its 60 Players online not 64. :)

  27. Akbar says:

Paladin, Resistance: Fall of Man didn’t sell very well because not many people had a PS3 when it came out and loads of people had 360s.

  28. marc says:

Maybe having played Uncharted, R&C future, and warhawk, you have convinced yourself that these games are “great” but all they look is average, I don’t think anyone is calling them great, and the only game there that has lasting appeal is Warhawk, which, from what I’ve seen, looks like an acquired taste. I know that bitching and crying helps PS3 owners feel like their console is superior, and that they didn’t just waste 400$+ on a system, that, when it comes down to it, the PS3 won’t have a great game until MGS4.
    Keeeeepppp waaaiittting

  29. Wow says:

I know that bashing and bitching about the PS3 makes people like you, MARC, feel better also. And it really doesn’t matter in the end whether you feel the games are great because all this is, is a matter of opinion. You may agree or disagree with people’s opinion, but coming on to a blog site acting like the all mighty asshole you are won’t make anyone respect you or your opinions. You might try being a little nicer and stop bringing your ps3-hater attitude to the discussion. Maybe in 10 years you’ll mature enough to stop talking trash about a game system you don’t own. Get personal experience with one, not your “friends”, your own and try some of the games. Hey, maybe you might like it, or would that be the end of the world for you?

  30. marc says:

    Good call, well said.
Those are all pretty good ideas, I wouldn’t mind owning a PS3, I’m sure it would be a great console. I bet I would also enjoy the games mentioned.
I just have a problem with how people tote these games, when reading some articles like this one, and what people have to say, you complain about me being an asshole, I’m just part of the opposition, I’m here to put a plug in the PS3 hoo-da, all the jazz that gets thrown around , it’s all pretty silly, I’m here to pop a hole in the bubble that these PS3 hopefuls have made, people need to understand their products, and what get promised.
I wish the best of luck to KZ2 and R2, but until solid facts are out, my word is on the opposition.
I did have a 360, but like most, it had hardware issues.

  31. ZeroOnyx says:

what makes you think people merely by PS3′s for BD playback? I have a few BD, true, but i have more than a dozen games. If anyone tells you that Uncharted looks anything less than gorguos need a HD tv, and then they will see how wrong they were. by X-mas time my game collection may double, 2008 is a good year for PS3, like it or not

  32. Kyle says:

    Well nicely said also Marc.

But I think your statement is as debateable as everyone elses.

Killzone 2 lived up to it’s hype at E307 and I don’t know what else to say. Resistance 2 is being created by a fantastic team, who created the excellent Rachet And Clank (this gen and last) and RFoM which is found only average, but I have not encountered a single bug, and it looks great.

Anyway, what is your point? People who are promoting these games are wrong? Becuase on the contrary all the evidence points towards the releases being great.

Or is it that the PS3 hasn’t the userbase for FPS games? Becuase I think you’ll fidn that the diversity of the PS2 allowed it to have many FPSs. And if you put it down to controller preference I ahve played Halo 3, and let em tell you, the controller is equally as useless for FPSs as Playstation’s is.

And to be honest I woudl say that the positioning of the stick is far better. But all opinion.

By the way, I don’t care about any of these games. Team ICO is what secured my purchase.
