Netflix on your PS3

05/09/2008 Written by Anthony Severino

This isnt the first time I have heard about it, and it wont be the last.  Sony is rumored to be in talks with Netflix to bring streamed movies to the PS3.  As for how much it will cost, expect similar rates as standard netflix, maybe slightly more so Sony can profit as well.

Will you use Netflix on your PS3?  Comment below…

As a Netflix user/lover, many don’t realize they have a “Watch Instantly” feature that debuted some time last year. It used to be that you could watch those movies for the same amount of hours per month as the amount you pay, rounded up (i.e., $15.99 per month plan got you 16 hours per month to watch movies online on top of your regular rentals). Well they somewhat recently repealed the limitations and now with most plans you can watch unlimited movies instantly online at no additional cost. The player is pretty good and I look forward to any work they might be doing with Sony to make the interface available. Hopefully they don’t use the PS3 browser b/c the zooming and analog stick control could be difficult for some.

I will use NetFlix on my PS3 on two conditions: 1. Everything is in HD, and 2. if it’s cheaper than going to the video store. Another thing I’d like, but doubt it will happen, is to be able to save them to my HDD. That would take up a lot of space, but I’d still like to have the option.

I will use it to see the movies that I didn’t care to see in theaters. All of my must buys will be on Blu

purchase vs rent and prices of each would be my final decision on whether not to use netflix, and an option on get it now vs monthly service fee would weigh as well. Definitely for the must keep I’ll stick with the Blu. Either way movies can get me spending my hard earned dollars.

The current DRM afflicted Netflix browser only allows watching movies on the PC screen. If you have a nice 28″ monitor in a nice home office, it still does not compare to watching that content on the 65″ screen in your living room on your comfy couch. Netflix, Sony, and any other content providers should consider this a no-brainer. I would definitely continue my netflix subscription or pay Netflix a little extra for this and I might even get another PS3 for the bedroom. Though, the content must be compelling and unrestricted. I pay for not only the content, but where, when, and how I want to enjoy it. The unfettered customer will be the most loyal customer.

I would absolutely use the netflix if a) it’s the same as or close to the original netflix prices and b) if it’s in HD

However, this will completely make the blu-ray player in the ps3 obsolete. when will you ever use it???

if it’s rediculously expensive compared to reg netflix, i’ll stick with my blu-ray discs from the netflix site till price drops
