Insider: Possible details on 2.40 and beyond [Exclusive]

Hey its me, whoelse again! Before I start, I need to say one thing. All of the following information has come from an insider I am in contact with and nothing is ’set in stone’. Plans often change, especially when it involves Sony. If any of the information is wrong, its because those plans have changed and not because it was made up.
My insider details the following probable features in 2.40:
- Access to XMB chat features from any PS3 game.
- XMB Trophies where around 70% of current titles will support them
- Video Coding and ‘groundwork’ for a future Movie Store (Out Sept)
Although my insider says 2.40 should arrive before MGS4 comes out (June 12th), there is absolutely no certainty that all of the above features will make it into this update and instead they may be spread into various future updates.
On a final note, online co-op for Super Stardust HD maybe in the works.

I did a flip, well I would have. Lol, I can’t wait to see this update. This is going to be great.
P.S. Online co-op for my favorite PSN game = me being very happy

Quick question:
Some people are asking if the xmb chat features will include the ability to send messages. Do you have any info that can clarify this?
Thanks again whoelse

Lol yeah as soon as i got the information from him, i immediately sent a reply asking if that includes text messaging (which surely would be easier to implement than voice chat). Im still waiting for his response. But as soon as i get it, i will post it up!
May 18, 2008 at 5:01 pm
That’s what I thought soon as I read it.
They probably meant text messaging.
This is a HUGE freakin’ step for PS3 if these features release.
MGS4- Not only a superb game but is making the console improve faster haha.
This is excellent stuff, can’t wait.
May 18, 2008 at 5:34 pm
I believe the Video Coding is recording video. Maybe its with the PS Eye, but it could be recording video from games, but i’m not sure on that.
May 18, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Thanks, whoelse. This should really get the ball in motion again for Sony.
May 18, 2008 at 6:19 pm
And then when Microsoft update their system, it will almost be back to where they started
I still think Sony need to spend more time pushing features, especially the ones that affect gameplay.

I hope that this will be the start of an onslaught of new features being brought to the PS3. It is apparent that Sony’s approach of letting the developers decide has only cause the developers to ignore that completely. Forcing them to incorporate it from here on out and providing a means to have old titles take advantage of the new features will only be a positive. I want to see Sony bring a new feature that isn’t available eslewhere soon. I am counting Home because I think that will clearly fit that bill. I would like to see something else as well. I have no idea what else is coming to the PSN soon, but there have been discussions that Sony is planning on truly revolutioning the online experience that it will offer gamers.
May 18, 2008 at 7:00 pm
LOL, sorry whoelse. I seen you were pissed at me on N4G for writing Whoelse. My bad.
Excellent story BTW. Thank you
May 18, 2008 at 7:21 pm
WTF?!?
I still cant listen to my own fuckin music?!? I know some twat is going to come out with ‘Its up to the dev’s’, well Sony should fuckin make it mandatory so they HAVE to put it in.
Come the fuck on Sony. XBOX 1 could do this! Its 2000 and fuckin 8! Its fucking PS3 we are on about here! The most future proof console ever. I was hoping for the first time I hit that PS Button playing Motorstorm I could listen to my own fuckin music. But no, I had to put up with Slip Knot.
I can understand how hard it can be. Over riding audio, stopping music when its a cut-seen, or if there is a heavy load like on GTA IV etc.
But A LOT if not all PS3 owners was expecting this from launch. Sony you are the leaders in consoles, why cant you take a leaf out of Microsoft’s book?
Peace out

whos the women?
May 18, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Bullshit. for 70% of existing game to support trophies, would mean that trophy support would have had to been in the PS3 SDK for 12 months or more. Totally bogus
May 18, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Oh obviously you have an “insider” at Sony who is willing to ruin their NDA and have a chance of getting fired to let your put this stuff on your little homemade blog. Makes total sense.
May 18, 2008 at 9:42 pm
who is that half naked chic in front of the ps3?
May 18, 2008 at 10:09 pm
How you fire someone if there is no clue on who the person is…
I think that Home will be great, but i also think that Sony shouldn’t expect everyone to use it and hold back features which would go on the OS, and instead only in Home.
Its clear they are doing this which is good.
I also think Sony should fix the small things as well as bringing the big things. Things like improving the text messaging system (those character limits suck) and allow people to see how many messages they have to read anywhere on the XMB without going to the friends list.
Theres loads of other small things like a clock etc but i wont go into detail.
May 18, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Awesome!
Hopefully all that and perhaps more will be in the update.
May 19, 2008 at 12:51 am
This sounds too good to be true. It is unlike Sony to have such a huge update. These sort of rumors start for every “big” update. We’ll be lucky if half is true. Not trying to be a kill joy, just sick of these bs rumors. BTW, an amazing pic!

Great. This will be a big step forward. Online gaming will be much more fun with this feature. I’m sure you can send and receive messages (this was already possible with Army of Two, by pressing the SELECT button in the main-menu), but what I’d really like to see is a in-game voicechat feature.
Trophies would be great as well. It pushes you just a littie more to complete a game, or play it al little longer just to get your hands on that award.
Eventually I would like to see an invite-system which involves EVERY game, so you can join or invite friends anytime, no matter which game they’re playing, or which movie they are watching (Yeah, I know, just like on Xbox Live).
May 19, 2008 at 9:37 am
in game messaging is already available in burnout paradise, so i think its up to the developers optimizing their games enough to add this feature. same with bowling, that has in game access to custom soundtracks
May 19, 2008 at 11:40 am
Clearly right now it isnt working for Sony by letting the developers should whether to implement messaging between friends.

May 19, 2008 at 8:44 pm
O_O …
You don’t realize how happy you guys have just made me… I’ve been having so many doubts about in-game messaging coming out soon and just gettin annoyed with waiting, but now that your “insider” told you it should be out before MGS4 comes out it just totally changed my view of things.
Can’t effin wait for that update.

I’ve heard from another source that in-game XMB won’t actually arrive until firmware 3.0 and that it’ll be shown at E3.
Is this true? Now I’m not sure who to believe! By “XMB chat features” you do mean in-game XMB, right?
May 19, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Indeed, the API for ingame messaging is on the PS3 SDK, BUT that means that every developer has to take his time to implement it.
As we seen and pointed by whoelse01 , almost every developer is NOT taking the time to make use of it.
So Sony has to make changes on the PS3 OS, so the ingame messaging comes from the OS and NOT from the game.
And i think that implementing text messages ingame is far far more easy than audio/video chat.
Anyway , im happy that this firmware is comming.. if only the picture of this post comes with the firmware…..
Cheers guys
May 19, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Ignore my earlier comment, firmware 3.0 will actually be an improvement on in-game XMB, which is indeed coming in 2.4.
3.0 will allow full access to the XMB during a game, including the internet browser, along with a new feature called “PSN Connect”. PSN Connect somehow makes use of the Eyetoy camera and Sixaxis motion sensing to allow you to communicate with those on your friends list. It’ll be shown at E3 this year.
