Insider: Updated information on in-game communication [Exclusive]
Firstly: As this has yet to be confirmed, this is still a rumor and so the final outcome may be different. There is no guarantee that all these features mentioned will actually finalize in the next update, but they are on the horizon.
A few days ago, you may have read my article about what my insider (who is involved with PSN) reports we may see in the up and coming firmware; 2.40. Now one of the features he listed was ‘Access to XMB chat features from any PS3 game’. I can now confirm what exactly this means: He has told me that you will be able to text message people with a slightly improved messaging system, as well as a voice chat option, from any PS3 title.
Not only is it good to hear we soon will be able to contact our friends while playing a game with voice and text, it’s also good to hear Sony are finally improving the, to be honest, crap messaging system to a slightly better one

Improved text and voice chat are greatly appreciated. I guess video chat will come at a later time. Not really much of a concern though. I don’t know if I really want to see what everyone is up to while they are playing games. lol

This will greatly enhance the community perspective of PSN. I really hope they allow you to chat with multiple friends (Switch channels like Live!). Anyways a good step forward on catching up with XBox Live!. I want Background music also.. PS3 has enough power to play a simple tune in the background to go along with your game. I also heard there will be some kind of 2D trophies with the update?

I always had a feeling voice messages would come out with in game XMB/messaging(2.4). dont know why it took so long. most people dont even talk about voice messages. when i dont have my USB keyboard connected i always wish i could ust send voice message

i dont think its gonna be the full xmb, apparently now it is just the chat features and i think the full one is supposed to be in 3.0, even though sony explained its just in game communication i bet people will still be pissed

damn straight people will be pissed. we have waited long enough for firmware 2.40. we’re not looking forward to firmware 2.4 prologue or lite. honestly, is it really too much to ask for the ability to chat/message and play custom soundtracks whilst in a game. i only just realised last night that if you’re in a chat room and want to play music or view a video on the ps3 hard drive at the same time, you actually have to exit the chat room. what the hell, its all local. i sent my mate a pic in a message and then entered a chat room to chat to him…asked if he recieved my message…he said yes but if he were to view the photo he would have to exit the chat room…download it/save it…and then start up the chat room again. i know i sound ridiculous, but come on. common sense prevails, these are all extremely basic operations aren’t they? don’t get me wrong, i love my ps3 and everything sony has done and is doing. we just need our next gen console to be up to a standard, that realistically it should have been at months and months ago. all in all the playstation 3 is a fantastic product and worth every dollar. it has true potential and has far more bang for buck (if you want to look at it that way). sugar and spice

as trends go id say the update will be out either late this month or just before ( as in a day or two) before Metal Gear comes out. I say this because every single update from what I recall have been released in the 3rd or start of the 4th week on a month. Of course there is no rule that says they cant do other wise but thats been the trend I’ve noticed!
Also this seems like a good blog, but I hope telling us this wasn’t just a ploy to get traffic to your site. I for one won’t be coming back if that is the case. I hope it isn’t! keep up the good work!

Thanks for the compliment.
If you were a long time reader you would know that we have reported insider info many many times, and so far we havent been wrong about anything.
Also please note the disclaimer at the beginning of the article, it clearly said that this info is not confirmed, and while the info about these features being added is 100% correct. If they will make it in this next update, is still up in the air. However its been said that these features will in fact make it in 2.40

If this turns out to be false, I will never believe another word published on this site. If it turns out to be true I will love playstation lifestyle forever for not giving my hopes up..but seriously we need full xmb already and the ability to send voice messages. The PS3 should get age of conan too..or some other nice MMO in my opinion.
