Exclusive: Info On The New Sony PS3 Controller
It has been brought to my attention that PlayStation Underground held a secret focus group earlier this year. A small group of PS3 owners were sent to a facility in ****** ****, California to test a new PlayStation product in development.
Once inside the testing facility, these PS3 owners were shown a mini-tripod that stood about 12 inches high. and what looked like 4 black PS3 “wiimotes”. Well they were essentially “wiimotes” for the PS3, but didn’t need a “nunchuck” attachment. I will refer to them as “PS3motes” for now on.
You can have up to 4 of these “PS3motes” connected at one time. A demonstrator at this focus group was there showing off the “PS3motes” capabilities, along with some mini-games to play. The mini games ranged from tennis, to fencing, to a “really really cool” paintball game. The demonstrator even used the “PS3mote” to play “Quake” on his laptop.
The “PS3mote” is said to be incredibly responsive and accurate. When the demonstrator crouched while playing the paintball game, the character on screen did as well.
The biggest concern of the demonstrator was that for these “PS3motes” to work they needed the tripod, which connected to the PS3’s USB port. It also needed to be set up in the middle of your gaming area, much like a “batter standing above home plate”. So this may not be in the final version as it seemed they were trying to come up with a more convenient method.
The focus group was then given different designs of the “PS3mote” and were given the opportunity to choose which one felt most comfortable, and looked the best. Then ended the focus group session.
Its safe to say that this new PS3 controller has been in development for quite a while, as emails for this focus group went out in January.
As for those of you who don’t believe this info, here is a copy and paste from the original email requesting people to participate in the focus group…
“Focus groups discussing PLAYSTATION®3 games are being held in your area. If you OWN a PLAYSTATION 3, we invite you to participate in a focus group. If you qualify, you will take part in a discussion lasting approximately two hours.
EACH PARTICIPANT WILL BE PAID $85.00!
(NAME REMOVED) in ****** **** will be conducting these discussions. If you would like more information or would like to participate in the focus group:
Email your name and phone number to **** **** at *****@*******.com or call 1-800-***-**** ext. ****.
Sincerely,
The PlayStation® Underground™”
NOTE: The picture at the beginning of the story is not the real “PS3mote”, it is also not what was shown at this focus group. The picture is a concept by Emil G. Ryderup back in September 2005

If this PS3mote comes to life one day, let’s hope the gameplay with a game will be as good or better than the wiimote.
May 31, 2008 at 5:54 am
great job sec, I think this will be an awesome feature especially with the graphical difference of the ps3 vs wii, u can almost make the game come to life with such a controller especially if the games looks as good as uncharted, damn that only makes things sound so good for ps3 owners. Great job on the info again and keep up the good work.
May 31, 2008 at 5:55 am
Edit my bad on spelling your name wrong I meant Sev, cant barelly see with the lights off in my room, lol. my bad bro.
May 31, 2008 at 6:02 am
Play beyond indeed!
May 31, 2008 at 7:04 am
Sounds…Interesting. Hopefully it is more precise than Sixaxis, or it’ll be useless. Either way, though, I don’t see how this could possibly out-perform a normal controller.
May 31, 2008 at 8:24 am
Assuming the city you blanked out has 6 letters for the first name and 4 letters for the second name (since thats how many stars you put for each) Then there are only 9 cities that it could possibly be: Culver City, Canyon Lake, Foster City, Morgan Hill, Nevada City, Orange Cove, Shasta Lake, Suisun City, and Temple City. Please tell me if one of these are the city it was held in.
May 31, 2008 at 8:37 am
i really dont want them to do a wiimote style controller
fanboys will have another thing to go on at the ps3 about saying it copied off nintendo
May 31, 2008 at 9:24 am
Now all 3 consoles will have their own remote.
Lol, its funny when you go to N4G and see an article about this and then discover it comes from your own site.
May 31, 2008 at 11:10 am
This is big news. I’m assuming that that decision to make the remote transform could have been made before or after this session. I can’t wait to see it unveiled. It definitely sounds like the press conference will be huge this year.
This reminds me of the Insomniac podcast where an interviewee said that he can see all systems eventually having to offer some type of wii-mote and traditional controller in the future. Obviously the future is now, sorta. Nintendo isn’t going to offer a traditional control scheme. At least I don’t see it happening.
May 31, 2008 at 11:45 am
sounds good .i own a wii and ps3 so i am not pissd of at all..lets hope it looks a little bit better than the xbox one wich personaly i think looks like my moms hair straitner .but every thing sony makes looks awsome ennyways
May 31, 2008 at 11:50 am
You’re about two months late. Clearly, undoubtedly and unbelievably fake.
May 31, 2008 at 11:51 am
interesting…
May 31, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Why not just concentrate on making great software for the Playstation Eye? You can technically use your whole body to move things and it should also provide “1 to 1″ response. No need to jump on the “waggle” bandwagon.
May 31, 2008 at 12:16 pm
I agree with LeShin,
They should use what they have. The eye is a pretty cool piece of hardware. They don’t need a remote. It makes them seem desperate.
May 31, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Look out for cool stuff involving the PS Eye this years E3!

Nice! Now all I hope is that the “ps3mote” will work with games as good as it sounds and looks on concept.
If this does work out nicely with a release at around Christmas 08′ i believe the Playstation 3 will come out on top at around Christmas 09
Great work on finding this TOP SECRET info!!
May 31, 2008 at 3:27 pm
I am sorry to report to you that this is false information, on report of Sony Computer Entertainment America.
However, we are releasing controller similar at the E3 ‘08 event. This is false evidence and close-rumors toward our next design. The new controller has motion control, but we can’t reveal much more other than changes to the screen movement.
We are NOT releasing any devices similar to the Nintendo Wii. We are not affiliated with Nintendo.
Thank you.
My e-mail is false, but my identification is under Sony Corp. I have come here on the asking to despel rumors. I am affiliated with Sony Corp.
May 31, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I have not followed the PS3 much but I am curious…will the remote work with games that have already been released on the console? Is it backwards compatible for use with PS2 and PSone games on the Playstation 3?

Yeah I got an email from sony too asking if I wanted to participate in the focus group in chicago. They were going to pay 85 bucks and I could see new sony products so I sent them my info. Never got back 2 me however…. I was also checking forums to see if anybody else went to the focus group but their comments stopped like the day before they went so i guess they had to sign a secrecy contract or sumtin…

@ “SCEA”
I was gonna just list you as spam, but rather than do that, I will just make a fool out of you instead.
If you are indeed Sony, I am sure your email address would be Official.
But most importantly, I would think that if SCEA was really ever to send someone here, to “despel” rumors. They would at least spell the word “DISPEL” correctly. Seeing as this is an official statement (sarcasm)
Even though I know you arent SCEA (I also can see your IP address) you must be a gamer… how the hell do you not know how to spell dispel? Almost every RPG has a dispel spell…. hahahahah

I’m not at all surprised to hear the introduction of the “3mote”. I have a picture on the HDD of my PS3 of this “3mote”, labeled as such on the picture. I received this speculation picture over a year ago, but I figured it was a joke. I’ll share it with those of you that are on my PS3’s friends list (as soon as I sift through the 1,000+ pictures LOL).

May 31, 2008 at 7:05 pm
[...] Playstationlifestyle.net seems to think so. While the image headlining the article is a mock up of a ‘Wiimote’ I don’t know why its taken Microsoft and Sony this long to produce their own controllers, there has to be more than one way to provide motion control to avoid patent laws. Sony and Microsoft could have made a big dent in Wii sales had they acted sooner in my opinion. [...]

June 1, 2008 at 12:45 am
I hope this PS3mote has better precision than the Wiimote. The Wiimote was way too imprecise for FPS in my time with the Wii. And yes, I owned RE4 for the Wii, the autoaim was the only reason that was halfway playable with the Wiimote.

Personally I’ve played with every next gen controller and the wii”s was the most unappealing. Even if this was more responsive and accurate I would prefer a dualshock. IMO Xbox has the best controller in terms of normal gaming and ps3 should be working on that stuff. Some say the wiimote is making games more interactive and getting closer to virtual reality. I think that is pure crap. If they are going to make the controller as basic as a remote they’ve got to make it incredibly breakthrough and interactive. If ps3 can show up the wiimote thats cool I guess but I hope this won’t become standard for consoles and I hope they have more up their sleeves for ps4. I hope they also have an amazing dualshock 4 in the works because just a remote isn’t as fun as people are making out to be with the wii. Wiis graphics and online capabilities are crap and it is mostly a casual/family game console. Most people are getting because anyone can due to it being so friggin cheap. good strategy I guess
