3rd Party Trophy Support: Capcom Signed, Will Other Devs Follow Suit?

As some of you may know, Capcom has stated that trophy support will not be added to Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD and Devil May Cry 4. I’m disappointed, but there is a silver lining in the cloud. Capcom has announced that trophy support has been added to the deliverable requirements in their contract with Sony. So you can definitely expect to see trophies in Capcom games that are going to see later releases; possibly even in Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. That is not guaranteed at this time.

With Capcom announcing this information, it makes you wonder what the other developers are going to do. Will Sony renegotiate with them and have trophy support required in all upcoming games as well? I would certainly hope so. Trophy support and in-game functionality is something that gamers want and would behoove both Sony and the developers to deliver. The spike in the sales of Super Stardust HD is proof that trophies add value to games. Though I’m a long time SSHD fan, I must admit the trophy quest forced me to play modes that I had previously ignored.

Do you think that Sony should require trophy support and in-game features from all developers? Why or why not?

defiantly they should make devs put these features in new games.
    why?

As you said, the recent jump in SSHD shows that people want trophies. That’s not to say that SSHD wasn’t a great game to begin with but just imagine if a third-party releases a moderately good game, people will probably still play the snot out of it in order to earn trophies.

What I’m more interested in is what the incentives will be for earning trophies. Sony has stated in the past that their achievement system would be more than just collecting points but actually serve a real purpose. What purpose would that be?

Beyond the idea of implementing trophies for the same reasons the third-parties do it for the 360 is enough for them to apply the feature to all upcoming games but if Sony can add something extra to the mix, like earning trophies for discounts or access to exclusive content; basically if Sony can find a way to make the trophy system a profit center for third-parties they’ll sign their name in blood to make sure they have trophies in their games.

Well said Incredibilistic. SSHD has always been an amazing game. I’m glad trophies exposed it to a wider audience.

Hopefully we’ll find out if there is more to trophies at E3 or as phase 2 and 3 of the PSN expansion takes place

I just find it lame that the accomplishments from DMC4 and skill-points (Uncharted, Ratchet, Resistance FoM, Burnout) cant cross over to the trophy system.

  10. Phoenix8387 Says:

I find it ridiculous that they are refusing to patch DMC4 in particular. It is set up exactly like Burnout is, all your accomplishments are tied into your PSN. You can’t fake it with a gamesave swap. All the triggers are already in it. All Capcom technically has to do is make a couple trophy pictures and add an additional trigger to their already present ones.
I’m sure I’m simplifying it a bit, but they already have the system in place so whats the point of not using it?

  11. Chris Rah Osiris Says:

    They will be patching Uncharted.

Insomniac is dedicating all of its efforts to R2 and won’t be patching Resistance Fom at this time.

  12. Phoenix8387 Says:

    @ DevonTheDude
Uncharted and Burnout very likely will cross over. And this is just my personal opinion but so will R&C and R1 after they get patched after R2 is released.

I’m guessing that Capcom is just concerned with trophies going foward. Without it being mandatory to retroactively implement, devs are going to use their resources on current projects. Based on the opportunity cost and other corporate strategies at least.

  14. Phoenix8387 Says:

I suppose so, but to go through the effort to make your own achievement system that couple so easily be converted to the Trophy System and no do so seems odd to me. If they wouldn’t have came out and just plain said ‘we’re not doing it’ and at least left the possibility for a later time things would be dandy. It just rubs me the wrong way how Capcom (and most devs in general) have treated Playstation users.

  15. Chris Rah Osiris Says:

I’m with you on the treatment. I believe all of that is about to change

  16. DevonTheDude Says:

    @Chris and Phoenix

I agree but it would be in their best interest to push old software with a trophy patch. If and when greatest hits PS3 games come to the US I don’t see why they wouldn’t add a patch for trophy support to spur sales. “Trophy Whores” may avoid these titles for newer ones. The older titles are practically all profit when they hit GH status since dev costs are paid off on the first software run. I can’t believe its almost year 2 of the PS3 and we haven’t heard anything about GH titles in the US, Japan and Europe have them announced. Maybe we will be seeing an announcement at e3 regarding GH games and additional trophy support.

Anyone know if Konami/Kojima have said anything about adding trophy support for MGS4?
