Rumor: PS3 to get In-Game Video Chat

One of the most requested features to come with In-Game XMB was Voice Chat. However when 2.40 arrived, many people were disappointed to hear that it wouldn’t be featured with the update. Sony will deliver this addition sometime later this year, however they also hope to go one step further: In-Game Video Chat. And we’re not just talking about video chatting while you have the game paused. According to an inside source, In-Game Video Chat will enable you to video chat with a friend while actually playing your game. It will work in a similar fashion to BD-Live where there is a PiP (Picture in Picture) window in the top right corner of the screen so you can see your friend(s) while you chat with them. It’s unclear when exactly this will arrive but it should come via firmware update by the end of this year.

Seems like Sony is shooting high with that update then…Maybe we’ll have some news about that AND the video store at E3.
July 10, 2008 at 8:21 pm
oh no ,dont start hyping features for firmware !!!
Then everyone is expecting stuff that SONY doesnt announce ,and then there is a backslash.

I talked about this with Sev1512 a while ago, in a leaked playstation.com update (refer to the message boards about PSN cards the link is there) screen shots say that in-game video chat is included in in-game xmb. It was not included in 2.4/2.41 but voice and video chat but would likely be coming at the same time.

If this is true, xbox live needs a hugh price cut.
July 10, 2008 at 8:34 pm
anything on cross-game invites?
July 10, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Uhh… yeah voice chat is fine and for some games NEEDED (BF:BC) but why video chat? I don’t need my friends face blocked a quarter of my screen. Hopefully they work on Voice chat 1st then Video chat later making for a faster In-Game Voice chat release.

Here is the link to the forum post I was talking about in-game video chat. Look at the bottom right at friend and messaging, “Talk to others during game play, say hello anytime you’re online, or have a VIDEO CHAT with an Eye camera, USB camera or headset

i looked at the picture and i saw what you were talking about and this may just be my understanding of it but it says that you can video chat but it doesnt say you can while youre in a game
although it does say you can talk to others while in game which does imply in game voice chat

um, i was wondering, how do i see my psn friends list and msg them while watching a BD movie? i put to allow internet connection wen watchin a BD but do i press the ps button to see my friend’s list? how does it work? sry if its a little off topic but the article mentioned BD-Live.

I don’t really need the ingame voice chat but I guess many people want it because they need it or they want it because the other system had it but I just want cross-game invites. The ingame music I only use it in the 360 in racing and sports games.. in the ps3 I only want it for that too and psn games.

this would be so extreme!!!
go for it sony

lennygundam14 and other people talking about cross game invites. Still don’t see how that’s imperative since isn’t a cross game invite just a message that says “Hey join me in this game.” I mean is it really that different from doing that? People still have to put in a new disk and everything so I don’t see how it saves that much time.
By the way that was discussed long time ago. I think that it’s coming around Fall with Home. I think it’s part of 2D home but they were showing that a long time ago (I think it was leaked home info) so… I am expecting it around the end of this year I just don’t know what I’m expecting.
If I ever have a girlfriend though it’d be nice to have ingame video chat where I’m in GTA IV in a stripper bar and she’s the stripper
July 10, 2008 at 10:36 pm
@MakaiSenki
Well of course you have to put the disc but you just don’t have to search for the room they are inviting you to join… some game have this but it will be really cool that all games support it. If it will really comes with home cool then.
July 10, 2008 at 10:38 pm
@MaikiSenki
Yea, you are right they showed it off last year at E3 07′ as a feature in home, Phil Harrison met up w/ people in home and invited them into a game of motorstorm.
I agree completely about what you said about cross game invites, it’s technically just a message. I have a 360 and when I get cross invite I typically ignore them since it’s such a hassle to get into that game. A lot of times the game matches would start before the game would boot from a disc swap. I had this problem with Halo 3, CoD, RSV 1,2 on 360. Why are cross game invites such a big deal anyway. I would prefer to have my controllers charge while the system is off before I get cross invites. It’s practical for HDD based games like Socom C or PSN games not traditional blu-ray games that would require you to swap discs.

[...] PS3 to get in game video chat. Sorry, this is absolutely laughable. Playstation Lifestyle is usually better than this. In case you didn’t know, the PSN poker game has had this for months. This is not an “if” situation, it’s a “when”. [...]

Hey, i’m all up 4 sony adding all these great features. But i think they really need to get their priorties sorted out. I mean, i don’t really care about in gave video chat. I personally don’t see the point. But in game voice chat and ingame chat room I AM DIEING FOR! Trophies? what trophies, i have most of all the popular ps3 titles and NON have yet to provide thropy support. I understnad this may take time, but COD4 not getting them? seriously…it’s one of the best titles to the ps3’s name. Also, i do not see why sony have gone through all the trouble of allowing me to view the settings menu. Cos all, barring a few (accessories) i have to quit game to do anyway, so whats the point in them being there? Any way my rants over. sorry, i’ve been blunt, but i hope u see where i am coming from.

Remember High Stakes on the Vegas Strip: Poker Edition?
Won’t Sony just add this as an SDK option for developers? They can’t have enough free memory to truly run this from in-game XMB. So this would just be an option for people to patch in.
July 11, 2008 at 5:40 pm
it’d be cool for games like poker, but do you REALLY want to see the kid half your age that just blew you apart with a rocket. I honestly don’t see the use of voice chatting with anybody but your girlfriend(or boyfriend) so they can show off for you.
ask yourself this: how many of you play games in your pajamas or less? I know I’m doing that right now.
July 11, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Remember when game consoles just played games, and nothing else? This sounds interesting but is it really needed? And yeah, you really want to see the 12 year old brat who cusses people out and makes racial remarks when he’s losing?
July 11, 2008 at 8:47 pm
I think it would be ace to have the video chat stream through the psp whilst in game as an option, that way we still have ingame video chat with no tv screen lost due to a floating box
what do you guys think?
July 12, 2008 at 12:23 am
I don’t really see myself using this… it annoys me enough to have split screen on let alone PIP. In-game chat I could potentially use, but video chat is a different story.
July 12, 2008 at 6:29 am
PiP is only a tenth of the screen if anything, unless your watching Blu or hd-dvd.
A great game it would work for is rockband, especially if you are playing with 3 other people online
July 12, 2008 at 6:43 am
It would sell PS Eye’s thats all that would matter to Sony, it’s another feature to sell more camera’s. Everyone who is hating on the in-game video chat must not use/have a PS Eye camera, it’s unbelievably better than the Live vision camera, trust me I own both.

Who frickin cares! Sony, gimme a way to send game invites and jump into a friends game from the in-game XMB instead!
