Rumor: Details on PS3 Music Store
So what type of music are you into? Rock? Pop? Hip-Hop? R&B? Well what ever genre you like, if you love your music, you may be interested to know one of our insider sources has confirmed that Sony has a Music Store in the works. The framework for the Music Store (and also Video Store) was added in 2.36 but you won’t be singing any tunes downloaded onto your PS3 system until the not too distant future. Initially it may only contain music from Sony BMG and other artists that Sony has, however it should spread to other music groups in time. If Sony does a good job of this, it could be a great success and an excellent addition to the ever-expanding multimedia functionalities of the PS3.

Wow! Cool! When released?

I don’t know if I would use this feature, especially if I had to pay.
Maybe Sony will do a double combo special for ppl who want a singstar track, but also want the sony to be usable on their hdd.

Interesting about the backend being included in Firmware 2.36. Also, I’m looking forward to seeing how Sony differentiates their music store offerings. It’s important to realize Sony has already given out some MP3 content for free on the PLAYSTATION Store, so this isn’t much of a stretch:
- LAIR Theme (.mp3) [FREE]
- PixelJunk Monsters Album (.mp3) [$2.99]
- PAIN Theme (.mp3) [FREE]
I’m sure there was some other stuff as well. So it will be cool to see some non game-related music put out there.

Wonder if it includes music videos, Sony BMG music videos are available on Xbox Live’s video marketplace

There are actually quite a few [game] music offerings on the PC Store. I purchased the PJM album which was very nicely done (Though it had some weird steps to get the music, but that will ultimately change).
I’m eagerly awaiting the Video and Audio stores. The PS brand isn’t just for gaming anymore.

Not sure who Sony has for artists that I would like, or if I would even use it since I usually download music for free or buy it on iTunes/on CD. But its still a good feature that many people would probably use. I would like to see more music from games on the store.

This will probably be integrated with Sonic Stage, Sony’s Digital Music Store. Though, I’m not sure. Lets hope we could switch store modes with the L2 and R2 Button (Game, Video, Music) [and maybe the color would change from stores, like the Game Store is blue, the Video Store is confirmed as cyan, and the Music store will hopefully be red or something]
…and hope there won’t be a Photo store soon to come.
@StakingSilence
Lets also not forget “The End Begins (To ROCK!)”

Honestly I don’t see why people would want it. If it’s DRM free then that’s another thing entirely but if there is some sort of limitation then… it’s worthless.
I will not buy music unless I’m free to be able to copy it to my PC, both my PSPs, Cd, MP3 player, Zune, Cellphone, Nintendo DS, or use it for custom soundtracks.
If I don’t have the full ability to use my songs as i desire, then I have no reason to buy online versions. The songs also have to be cheaper than buying a cd. If they’re 25-50 cents and have those freedoms, then I’ll buy a ton of them. Why should I pay 32 dollars for 32 songs if I can get a greatest hits compilation of 40 songs for 20 dollars?
It’d be nice if we could sample music in store, but unless my virtually impossible desires come true, I refuse to buy digital music. I bought songs from Itunes and had to burn a cd in order to use them as I wish. That entirely defeats the purpose. Plus somehow the tracks disappeared meaning that I essentially wasted the money on the cd that I bought since i lost some of my (favorite) tracks and can not reclaim them and don’t know where the disc is.
Unless Sony can make it as worthwhile as buying regular cds, cost effective, and easy to use and transfer as much as I want… then it is an essentially worthless idea. Otherwise I’ll probably start buying music again and Sony will be the best online music distro company ever.

@MakaiSenki
I believe a Sony Exec has said that they are intending on DRM free music. I’d also wager that they will have a preview option for [most] songs, we already have one for games that show videos it wouldn’t take a whole lot of reworking to do that with a music store.

My Guess is this Has something to Do with ITUNES probably!!!!

I will never again purchase anything by bmg. ever. ever ever ever ever…I would rather play the spoons.

If the music is DRM free, and the PS3 can upload it to various MP3 players…Count me in. That’s one more thing I won’t need my PC for.
If only they’d get the browser working well…I could scrap my PC entirely. *sigh*

Yup Sony confirmed that DRM ruined their last music store (on PC) so it’s out apparently, video DRM is a different story. IO would love to be able to d/l them to PSP for on the go viewing

Imagine buying/downloading video game songs or full soundtracks from the PS Store!!
They should not limit the PS Store to digital downloads either, it would be awesome to buy CDs, DVDs, BluRays, games via PS Store and have it shipped to your door!!!
Imagine pre-ordering Killzone 2 from the PS Store and having it shipped to your door on launch day!
Hell, they should also sell PSPs, PS2s, UMDs, PS Eye, LBP Sack Boys/Girls, MP3 players, phones, etc!!!

They actually ran music videos on the Australian PS store. I downloaded Natalie Umbruglia and the Rogue Traders “Voodoo child”. It was a limited amount and to be honest most were locals rather than well known internationla stars but it was good! They’ve stopped it now, so maybe this was the trial? Personally I’d love to see more HD music videos for sale at say £0.99. I also think downloading music would be good especially if its DRM free. they may tie to your PSP or other Sony item though :(. Personally I have a PSP and an IPOD so some sort of tie in would be good. I know I can transfer my MP3’s from my IPOD onto my PS3 but it would be good if we could go from the PS3 to the IPOD as well.

Hope we can use our music players and synchronize with the PS3 via Bluetooth and USB.

[...] Rumor: Details on PS3 Music Store- A bold claim from playstationlifestyle.net. Of course I want these rumours to be right though! All’s Sony needs to do is: have a great selection of music, at the right price, in a store that is as gorgeous as the current PlayStation Store, and simplicity is key. That is quite a tall order, but Sony would certainly reap the rewards if it got it right. [...]
