Life with PlayStation will be Folding@Home

It seems that the reason for the delay (we assume) of Life with PlayStation, was to incorporate Folding@Home into the program. A very noble and understandable reason for a delay I must say.

Here is a quote from Noam Rimon, Senior Development Manager for SCEA R&D

We’re going to offer this as a free service that will be easily accessible directly from the XMB. Life with PlayStation will feed live content to your PS3 with updates on news and weather on a visually stunning and interactive global map. Imagine being able to wake up to your PS3 to see if you need to pack an umbrella for the day. Or just relax as you listen to your favorite tunes while reading up on top news from around the world.

We’re also very excited to share that Life with PlayStation will be combined with our Folding@home project. What does this mean? While you’re tuned into Life with PlayStation, you’ll also be helping Stanford researchers cure diseases like Alzheimer’s and various types of cancer while Folding@home is running in the background.

We know you’re eager to check it out for yourself, so we’re working hard to get it in your hands. Stay tuned.

  1. I like that they are combing the service with the project. The interfaces do appear to overlap. Now I’ll be saving the world and finding out what’s going on in the world. Yay

“saving the world while finding out whats going on in the world”

    Awesome!

Hopefully they wont delay it once more to integrate this thingy into Home

  4. I like the change. Makes using the program (either one) even better.

If they tie F@H into Life w PS I will probably take a pass and just fire up the Wii. I don’t have the finances to pay for a new console because F@H caused the RSX chip creates excess heat so the fan kicks in. I want a way to disable that option.

Wait a minute, your saying that because its incorporated with F@H you can’t afford it? Are you worried about the power bill or something? How does it being incorporated with F@H cause you to spend more?

I have heard about what he’s talking about as well. Basically, Folding@Home supposedly makes the console work much harder than it normally does just playing games and movies. This in turn causes all the parts of the console to work harder as well, and supposedly has caused some PS3s to crap out (hence the money issue…he’s saying he doesn’t have the money to replace the PS3).

I don’t know if any of that is true, but I have heard about it before.

Both of you and everyone who thinks like that has nothing to worry about.
While idle the PS3 consumes 185W, and on max efficiency it takes 200W. Thus this 15W difference in nothing to take in account while checking the monthly bill. Probably your night lamp takes more electricity than this difference. The PS3 was designed for 24/7 labor routine so you don’t have to worry about it’s life span. It’s not like it’s and Xbox360 or something like that.
By leaving your PS3 logged to the F@H you actually help save the world. If all you have to do for a better world is leave your PS3 on at nights, I don’t see why not to.

Now we know why the delay…the combining of the two and that lovely paperwork.

-The problem I feel for the project is that most of the projects takes hours to complete regarding folding. And that this may hinder the Life news part when we want to expand on it.

=I just use Folding for when I need to recharge my controller.
