Life With PlayStation Begins NOW - no...really, it does
+ Posted by Noam Rimon // Sr. Development Manager SCEA R&D
If you’ve ever wished you could find everything you need to start your day on your PLAYSTATION 3, Life with PlayStation give you one more reason to do so. This free service delivers a new way for you to utilize your PS3 to instantly access real-time news and information like weather updates from over 60 cities around the world.
Life with PlayStation provides a stunning interactive globe, a 3D world map that you can twirl around to see live cloud movement courtesy of the University of Wisconsin, combined with up-to-date weather information from the Weather Channel, top news headlines provided by Google news, and live web cam images via the Earth Television Network — all localized to the select city. And why not have your favorite soundtrack playing in the background while you go through your morning ritual (just think, no TV commercials and teasers to find out if you need to bring an umbrella to work)? You’re on your own for your morning caffeine fix.
For those following the progress of Hurricane Ike throughout last week, we were able to track the storm’s real-time movement from Life with PlayStation. (See the screenshots below)
We’re also really excited to share that this new lifestyle service is running in parallel with our Folding@home project. Essentially, this means that while you’re taking a stroll on Life with PlayStation, you’re automatically helping Stanford University to work towards curing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and various types of cancers. For those familiar with Folding@home, we’ve made some enhancements for more advanced simulations of protein folding and support for wider variety of simulations, in addition to adding a unique ranking system showcasing top contributors from around the world.
Life with PlayStation is now available for download by selecting the Folding@home icon under “Network” on the XMB. Give it a whirl, we look forward to reading your feedback.

September 17th, 2008 at 6:22 AM
I’m quite dissapointed. Why was this hyped? Dumb fanboys…
September 17th, 2008 at 6:22 AM
Its not working on mine!
September 17th, 2008 at 6:23 AM
Nice! So THIS is what Jeff meant when he posted on the PS Blog that it wont be come via a firmware update or a download in the PS Store… I sort of assumed this would be the only way after he spoiled that!
Nice fine, going to DL now.
PS- 126MB only!? XD
September 17th, 2008 at 6:25 AM
Well, just tried, didn’t work. :\ Do I have to DL the new firmware (that does nothing) 2.43? Who knows.. or maybe its only on US servers atm.
@gazo, are you in the US?
September 17th, 2008 at 6:26 AM
I didn’t have to download 2.43
So it must be on the US servers only for the time being.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:30 AM
Thanks for the info man, im gonna check it out now.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:32 AM
Not working sev.
No update =( =( =( =(
September 17th, 2008 at 6:33 AM
Ahh, I see. So nothing to do with the FW update, but like the Uncharted trophy patch it sometimes hits different servers at different times.
Oh well, I’ll wait. I already know this is now what my PS3 will be doing when not playing games, lol. Listening to music, F@H, and spinning the globe.
PS- Mind updating the story with more pics, and a little impression later?
September 17th, 2008 at 6:33 AM

September 17th, 2008 at 6:36 AM

September 17th, 2008 at 6:37 AM
Yeah must just be us, im in uk.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:40 AM
Hmmm, weird, people in US and UK say it’s not working.
Sev must be living on a remote island where they released the patch early!
So has it worked for anyone yet?
September 17th, 2008 at 6:41 AM
@had… ??? He has a video of it running too, plus I doubt Sev (of all people) would ‘hoax’ something like this.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:42 AM
nope, restarted my ps3 like 3 times and i still get no update, Sev hacked his ps3 >.> lolz

September 17th, 2008 at 7:01 AM
someone on the playstation forums asked a good question
they asked if we who have LwP have a japanese psn account
i did create one the other day to try and download some demos not available in the states..
i wonder if that has anything to do with it.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:04 AM
I have a Japan account. I think they have just pulled it off the server for now. Maybe waiting for an official announcement.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:10 AM
Not working for me yet =(
I’ll try tomorrow morning; still thanks for the info.
September 17th, 2008 at 7:10 AM
yeah i saw a person on my friendslist running it so it’s out…but i can’t get it yet lol
September 17th, 2008 at 7:23 AM
I tried to get it to update by opening and closing F@H over and over. Then I deleted Folding@home and then reinstalled, it updated as soon as I tried to start it. SOoo maybe that will work for you. Or maybe its a coincidence. GL.
September 17th, 2008 at 8:13 AM
i got it im from nyc NYC 2.42 PS3 60gb with a jap account add me jcs0625
September 17th, 2008 at 9:36 AM
Just tried from a Japanese account running on a Japanese 60GB located in Japan and no luck–. Might try deleting and reinstalling after i read more on the forums
September 17th, 2008 at 10:18 AM
maybe it wont update if you already have a simulation running so finish the current job or delete and reinstall might get it going
September 17th, 2008 at 10:42 AM

September 17th, 2008 at 4:05 PM
I am at 89% DOWNLOAD of f@h update…AZ
September 17th, 2008 at 5:23 PM
Prompted for an update, installed, and look at that it’s still folding@home. The update info said it just changed the way some download and upload streams were handled
Calling hoax. Which seems to be a common theme around here anymore.
September 17th, 2008 at 5:45 PM
@ Billy Willis,
Your a bright one. Sony takes the update off the servers, LWP news is on every major site, yet because its not working for you, its a hoax.
September 17th, 2008 at 6:01 PM
Prompted for an update, installed, and look at that it’s still folding@home
Same here still says folding
September 17th, 2008 at 6:05 PM
WTF
September 17th, 2008 at 8:14 PM
So no more folding at home? Im confused.
September 17th, 2008 at 9:08 PM
@ John Fredericks
Folding @ Home is still going to be there, it’s just integrated with this new program. It runs in the background.
September 17th, 2008 at 10:03 PM
Hey Sentry! I haven’t heard from ya much, so is this where you’ve resided….for now?
September 17th, 2008 at 10:18 PM
F@ will be running in the background? If that is true, I will never load LWP.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:34 AM
@ Rumble,
Its true, it runs in the background.
I don’t understand why there are so many Folding@Home haters.
September 18th, 2008 at 12:50 AM
i actually dont mind folding@home. but wen im on the internet looking at statistics and stuff about folding, it freezes up on me alot! so im sure if folding@home will be running in the background of LWP, its gonna freeze up alot i bet!
September 18th, 2008 at 12:51 AM
Nice!!!!!!!!
September 18th, 2008 at 8:27 PM
It works im on it and its awesome. i like the icon change.
September 18th, 2008 at 8:48 PM
Is it just me, or did most people expect more local news and weather instead of just certain regions. Hopefully this is just a start and we will see more areas on the map in the future. And for all the people hating on Folding@Home, get over it already. If you don’t use it, don’t use it, but it’s a great project with huge potiential to help EVERYONE, and, its in the background now, so whats the big deal.
September 18th, 2008 at 10:35 PM
This is so awesome i love my PS3 and i love Sony.
September 18th, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Thx for the heads up!
September 19th, 2008 at 7:00 AM
it worked all good for me..?
i hadn’t installed f@h yet, so had to install that first.
i read on another forum that removing f@h then reinstalling it helps..? if you’re desperate (its not all that great, just google news + live global weather feed)
September 19th, 2008 at 2:16 PM
LOOK GUYS ITS OUT IM IN EUROPE AND IVE GOT IT!
