Killzone 2 is coming out next week, so we are pretty sure you PlayStation 3 owners will be quite busy. But if you are looking for that gem of a game, that you may have missed, we are going to list the Top 5 PS3 games that didn’t get the attention they deserved. Whether it be because you didn’t own a PS3 yet, or because you just didn’t pick up the title, doesn’t mean you should miss out on these games. Here is our top 5…
#5) Heavenly Sword
You play as Nariko, the strong willed, fiery red haired heroine, with the goal of defending your clan from the evil King Bohan. Tales the clan passed down from generation talks about a cursed sword that has the power to vanquish all evil which you eventually come to wield. With gorgeous level design, some of the best character animation I have seen to date, and compelling storyline, this game wasn’t appreciated as it should have been.
#4) Gran Turismo 5: Prologue
While even before it was released, it had already received the stigma, that it was just a “demo”. If that were the case, it would be the very best demo I have ever experienced. It’s lacking in the track department, but not in the variety of vehicles, or the amount of gameplay you can squeeze out of the most recent release from Polyphony Digital. Sporting some of the best graphics to date on a racer, and one of the slickest presentations I have seen, calling this a $40 demo is completely unjustified.
#3) Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Having been released among other smash titles during the past holiday season, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, did not get it’s time in the limelight, although it deserved it. A sequel to one of the top selling PS3 games to date, went above and beyond improving on it’s already solid formula. Off road, arcade style racing has never controlled so well, and at the same time offered so much eye candy when you crashed and burned. Stunning, lush landscapes make up the majority of the tracks, with only a few stages being a throwback to the original Motorstorm which was relatively a brown, muddy mess. Trophy support, and solid multiplayer round out the game’s vast feature set.
#2) Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank games are known to be some of the best platformers ever to grace the PlayStation 2, and on it’s PS3 debut, it certainly doesn’t disappoint. With near Disney Pixar quality graphics, a variety of gameplay elements, and some of the most hilarious, enjoyable weapons you will ever wield… Ratchet & Clank Future, has me looking forward future installments. I am sure many of you missed out on the game due to is “kiddy” looks, but I assure you, if you can get past that, it’s a very charming, and deep game.
#1) Valkyria Chronicles
The best PS3 game that nobody played. Seriously. This strategy RPG has everything going for it other than sales. With one of the most enjoyable casts, a deep and interesting storyline, and totally kick-ass gameplay mechanics, this is my favorite PS3 game to date (other than MGS4). The game boasts beautiful anime/story book style graphics, and 40+ hours of gameplay, you WILL NOT regret picking this title up. Try out the demo on the PSN, I did, and that day I went out and hunted this game down. DLC should be arriving soon, that lets you play as the bad guy, which I must admit, I cannot wait to sink my teeth into.

Strongly disagree with #4 and #3, both were very heavily marketed (still are).
I don’t think anyone missed it lol (unless they were in a cave or simply didn’t want the games).
The rest seems about right, great feature.
And buy Valkyria Chronicles people!
I still haven’t met anyone who played it and disliked it.
February 17th, 2009 at 10:39 AM
Since I am actually pretty sure you are in UK I get where you are coming from, but over here in the states there wasn’t any marketing for GT5: Prologue.
There was a couple commercials, etc for Motorstorm: Pacific Rift but because of it’s release time frame, it was pushed to the back of the line.
Glad you agree with the rest though! Oh and I wholeheartedly agree with you, EVERYONE should go buy Valkyria Chronicles.
February 17th, 2009 at 10:47 AM
Dude, how could you miss Folklore? I’d say its one of the best PS3 titles that used the sixaxis controller perfectly. Everything about the game was amazing, although the story was a bit stale. Folklore should be there instead of Heavenly Sword!
February 17th, 2009 at 10:48 AM
wow i dont like this list at all.
I HATED motorstorm, heavely sword, GT 5 Prologue, and Valkyria Cronicles.
If I were you guys I’d avoid this list all together…this is a horrible article…just my opinion though.
February 17th, 2009 at 10:51 AM
@ Seth, and Sneeches,
We can’t please everyone
February 17th, 2009 at 10:59 AM
Anthony, I’ve spoken with many people who played Heavenly Sword and they are not impressed by it at all! I’m sure you’ve enjoyed it very much but from what i’ve been hearing is that it was an average game and nothing more.
Heavenly Sword was also heavily marketed and was one of the first games to come out in PS3, so people knew about it and still didn’t pick it up, do to the poor review and so on.
Have you played Folklore? If so, what did you think of it? Correct me if I’m wrong but it came out the within the similar time-frame as heavenly sword. It wasn’t marketed that well in North-America but received great reviews and fan appreciation. I truly believe Folklore deserves to be in the list. It’s just my opinion but i think others who played the game would also agree. Thx.
February 17th, 2009 at 11:12 AM
Didn’t Like Heavenly Sword. Thought the combat was very repeative and didn;t really require any skill. Motor Storm Pacific Rift is Great. Way better than the first installment. A real Gem that is often over looked and underated is Uncharted Drakes Fortune. A* PS3 title
February 17th, 2009 at 11:13 AM
will i really disagree with the list i played heavenly sword it was pretty much mediocre game with only few fun moments
as for gt5 will it’s just not my type but i assure u any who loved the game before know it’s out there cuz in my opinion when u reach number 5 u don’t need that marketing
pacific rift was a very bad game compared to the original which was very challenging and fun while this one sucked big time
valkyire is a turn based strategy rpg game @_@ i rest my case
and ratchet and clank was repetitive and boring with no story i’m looking for a way to sell it if u r interested
u should ‘ve mentioned wipe out lair”which i loved despite what they say about it it was just great “
February 17th, 2009 at 11:24 AM
Lets see. I do not agree with #5, that game was truly bad.
but what is up with these people saying #2 and 1 were bad games. Any of you who think VC is a bad game, seriously need to look into quiting gaming. I love the people who won’t give it a try because its a strat game.
good list bro, some people just don’t like good games
February 17th, 2009 at 11:25 AM
@ Sneeches
How can anyone hate Valkyria Chronicles?
February 17th, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Anthony, I think you need to scrap this list and do it again. You should keep Valkyria Chronicles but get rid of the rest. You should maybe have a voting system where we can vote for our favorite underrated games, and then make the list accordingly. It seems like this list only contains games that you liked but we as fans do not agree.
February 17th, 2009 at 11:26 AM
I disagree with the whole list, the only game that should be there is Valkyria Chronicles.Folklore, Disgaea 3 and Virtua Fighter 5 should of been on the list.
@J
I think everyone has heard and played Uncharted.
February 17th, 2009 at 11:54 AM
@ Seth, I am scrapping nothing. This is our list, not yours.
Everyone has their own opinions.
February 17th, 2009 at 11:56 AM
The list is not being scrapped, get off his back.
The games he listed are good games regardless of your individual opinions, and the proof is in the pudding.
See the title of the article? It says *MAY* have missed. That means you may have played it already or seen it.
If you don’t like it, tough luck. The list isn’t going anywhere lol.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:06 PM
Heavenly Sword is an awesome game that got bashed for being short in game length and no multiplayer. If people like God of War, why wouldn’t they like this one? Makes no sense. Stunning visuals, sound, music, and good controls-which do have some depth-But not so obvious at first.
The Six Axis part I thought was INCREDIBLE and should be put in other games. Being able to guide arrows into your enemies and explosives is well done.
And for now being able to be able to buy for $29 or less…
Now how about LAIR…Ouch!!!…man that game could of been something if a little more work could of been done. The gameplay killed that game.
The voice acting was irrating to me at least. Now thinking, wait, a lot more work in the story end would of help too.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:12 PM
Heavenly Sword was an excellent game that could have used a bit more polish. The way you could switch between stances allowed you to flow combat moves nicely.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:12 PM
Motostorm, I felt, hurt the PS3 in the beginning with that poor demo that they put out. I saw it at retail stores and look and say what hell are they thinking. Thankfully, they improved the game quite a bit, but still felt that this not a $60 game.
So, looking at Pacific Rift, I am scared to go down that road again.
NOW GT5 is incredible with a logitech steering wheel.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:18 PM
There are some good games in the list. Valkryia is really a gem though. There might be a sequel down the road after the anime despite it’s low sales. What really turned me off to Motorstorm was the terrible load times and the lack of variety in the environments. Something that was fixed in Pacific Rift.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:20 PM
Haha calm down dude, you don’t have to scrap anything that was just my opinion that’s all.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:37 PM
I wish GT5: Prologue would get a trophy patch or home integration.
Maybe that’s coming with the rumored damage patch…
February 17th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
Good article and very good idea about this list.
Valkyria Chronicles, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank are realy good games. I am sure that a lot of people miss them. Another two I didn’t played.
Valkyria Chronicles is awesome, one of the best PS3 games, and at the moment exclusive… Don’t miss it!
February 17th, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Also, I assume Motorstorm: PR is trying to bolster sales with the new demo. I WANT to buy it – just haven’t been convinced by the original demo.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:53 PM
“This strategy RPG has everything going for it other than sales.”
And trophies. Patch that bad boy, and bam, instant sell-out.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:55 PM
Sony seems to market up to the release date – then sometimes stop. In a roundabout way, Media Molecule mentioned this recently – hinting in their developer interview that Sony needs to market more after release in Japan for LittleBigPlanet.
I’m sure most of these devs would like to see continued marketing of some kind (especially TV). Just a reminder that the games are still there and there’s still a thriving community.
February 17th, 2009 at 1:04 PM
@Seth,
I think he’s just trying to get a rise out of you. We really do appreciate the comments – I kinda like the idea for a poll. But even for a poll, we’d need to provide options.
Maybe we could move this discussion to the forums and list options for voting and have people add them. This is a great list, but for my own purposes, I’m interested in what you guys think. I actually only own GT5: Prologue on that list, so yeah – I definitely missed some of those. Unfortunately a lot of people only buy for trophies now… unless patched, these have trophies:
#5: Heavenly Sword – NO TROPHIES
#4: GT 5 Prologue – NO TROPHIES
#3: Motorstorm Pacific Rift – TROPHIES YAYZ
#2: R&C Tools of Destruction – NO TROPHIES
#1: Valkyria Chronicles – NO TROPHIES
February 17th, 2009 at 1:19 PM
Valkyria Chronicles definitely deserved that #1 spot; I wanted a new game a few weeks ago to tide me over until Killzone 2, and saw a few reviews about VC. I initially ignored it when it came out because it looked kind of childish, and it came out in the same few weeks as other “must have” games like Dead Space, Fallout 3, Resistance 2, GoW 2, Far Cry 2, you get the point.
So after going to 5 different locations and not finding, I managed to find the last display copy at a Gamestop and started playing it. Easily, one of my favorite games of all time; unique tactical gameplay and a story that enhances and develops almost every single character so that you can relate to them somehow.
If you like RPG’s, get it.
If you like strategy/tactical games, get it.
If you like a great story and character development, get it.
If you like anime style artwork, get it.
But mainly, if you have a PS3, get it (gotta show SEGA some love for making it an exclusive that didn’t initially sell well).
February 17th, 2009 at 1:29 PM
I really want Motorstorm PR, the new demo is just convincing and im a motorstorm fan, but Im saving up to buy a car and with killzone 2 coming out soon, dammit. But MSPR deserves that spot on the list.
February 17th, 2009 at 2:05 PM
i saw someone up there mention Disgaea 3 and that would also be a good choice for great game that you may have missed and most likely did.
February 17th, 2009 at 2:10 PM
i agree with the list for the most part….think folklore shouldve been on there somewhere…..probably in place of gt(since that’s pretty much an extended demo lol)………val chrons. deserves the top spot, that game is truely being slepted on….one thing i dont get is how people are bashing heavenly sword….it deserves to be on the list……that game was a very good game that was slepted on…mainly cause it was short….when you finally get all the moves, it’s over….other then that it had what good games should have: good gameplay, graphics, story, sound, voice overs, controls, etc….
February 17th, 2009 at 2:46 PM
I agree with all the games listed….all top notch games and Valkyria Chronicles is a severely overlooked game….those craving a excellent RPG need to do themselves a favor and get this game! The visuals alone are stunning.
February 17th, 2009 at 3:08 PM
@ Seth, No worries bro. You are entitled to your opinion.
February 17th, 2009 at 3:23 PM
I find it funny how so many people think that if they dislike a game then so should everyone.
Good list, while I’ve not played #3, I do own and love the rest.
February 17th, 2009 at 3:38 PM
yes i miss everyone.
February 17th, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Ratchet and Clank is a great game (I have beaten it three times). I’m not sure why people criticize it so much: you have like 35 weapons to choose from, I would think that would keep the game fresh. It definitely did for me. It has plenty of replayability, hilarious dialogue, great gameplay, great graphics, and a story that gets much less credit than it deserves.
It’s a must play for PS3 owners.
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift is a game I pre-ordered, got on Day 1, and then played about an hour of it in the next three weeks. Didn’t like it at all. Recently I decided to give it another try and have started playing it again and it is a blast. Great game.
One last thing: BUY 50 CENT 2: BLOOD ON THE SAND. I am.
February 17th, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Folklore should’ve been on this list instead of Valkyria Chronicles.
February 17th, 2009 at 4:08 PM
I like RPGs and stuff but hated Folklore…much to slow and kinda boring.I bought it cause it looked like a game I would really like but got rid of it due to just not being into it.
February 17th, 2009 at 5:04 PM
I still wish I get Heavenly Sword, tried the demo and loved it! I hope they patch it. And also a sequel, there’s already a petition!
February 17th, 2009 at 5:14 PM
I think you pretty much hit the nail on this one! I can see where people are arguing about Heavenly Sword. It was a great game but it didn’t last as long as it should have. Should definitely be a rental but not a purchase.
Valkyria deserves that number one spot hands down. Go around and ask people if they’ve played it, “What’s that? huh?”. It’s like that awesome dream that you had but you can’t explain it to other people because words aren’t good enough.
If you made this post a couple months from now, you’d have to add in Yakuza 3. It’s going to be the most epic, most overlooked game to ever come into existence.
February 17th, 2009 at 5:17 PM
I’ll admit I missed out on #5, #3 and #1… though I honestly wanted (and still want) all three. But because of Trophies now… I can’t justify going back and picking them up. MS:PR is an exception however since it does have Trophies… I’m not a huge racer fan so it just hasn’t made my list with so many other great games coming out now.
February 17th, 2009 at 5:27 PM
You said ‘To date’ 4 times… -_-
I played the Valkyria Chronicles demo and thoroughly enjoyed it but I still don’t think I will buy it because of more must-have titles being available.
February 17th, 2009 at 5:29 PM

It’s pretty sad when people bypass the opportunity to play a great game just because it doesn’t include trophies. That’s the same concept of saying none of the Final Fantasy games were worth playing because they didn’t have trophies. You could be (and are) passing up some great gaming opportunities just because you can’t make your E-Peen bigger with trophies.
It’s great that Anthony looks past this and didn’t just put games up there that only had trophies. If you’re a true gamer, you play games to have fun. That’s what they were made for, right? Oh well, now that trophies are required hopefully no more great gems will be frowned upon with the excuse of not having trophies.
February 17th, 2009 at 5:38 PM
Wow, you certainly picked the correct title, and games.
Out of my 16 game library (larger than anybody elses I know personally), I do not own a single one of the listed games. I do intend to sell Motorstorm and purchase it’s sequel, and also plan on picking up the beautiful GT5 when it is released. Prologue doesn’t appeal to me with it’s limited tracks…
February 17th, 2009 at 6:32 PM
thanks for the list! i’ve played alot of those, but i think they’re great games that need to be enjoyed! PS3 owners need to get behind thier exclusives and give the publishers a reason to keep them.
VC FTW!
February 17th, 2009 at 9:09 PM
I agree that Heavenly Sword was a really cool game, but it was so damn short it was a waste. It as (at the very least) a great introduction to the PS3, But I’d say its to outdated to bother with anymore. Plus ‘StalkingSilence’ said it best, no trophies = no point. The #1 PS3 classic for new PS3 users has GOT to be Uncharted. It remains my all time favorite title to date and for the newbees they were even good enough to patch it for trophies that range in skill to obtain but do not enter the realm of impossible (Im looking at you Rockband)
Far as racing games go, I personally hated MotorStorm and think that if you are going to dub the newer version to be a classic, there are much much better racing games that deserve the prestige. Burnout Paradise is outstanding in every aspect of a racing game and continues to grow as we speak. I also think that Midnight Club LA is a great game (even if it takes a while to figure out the dynamics of the cars).
I cant judge the other 3 as I never played them, but considering the PSN titles alone (like Pain and Pixel Junk Eden) I’d say there are probably better games to list than the top five here. My opinion… obviously.
February 17th, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Agree with Valkyria planning to buy this season (can’t get in this month)
about others already have (^_^)
about folklore game is great it will be in the list
February 18th, 2009 at 12:06 AM
@ the above , negative posters. Please dont bash on a game you ” heard bad things about” unless you’ve played. I played the Heavenly Sword demo and it was really fun but it seemed like waaaaay too much work to kill just a hand-ful of enemies, maybe it was on a more difficult setting? I will eventually try the full game as I haven’t already so cant truthfully judge it. As a fan of racing games I love GT5:P and Motorstorm, it gives you a great thrill and sense of speed. I also already have Ratchet ‘n’ Clank and that game is VERY fun, im 16 and for some reason thought I should try it even though it looked kinda corny but its one of my favorites now along with Uncharted. i tried the Valkyria demo and really liked although Im not into strategy I am into some RPG’s so I will certainly pick this game up eventually.
February 18th, 2009 at 12:32 AM
I have to disagree with this list as well…IMO it should be:
5. Heavenly Sword
4. Folklore
3. Disgaea 3
2. Wipeout HD
1. Valkyria Chronicles
sales figures for these games dont match their quality. I dont understand y Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift is on the list. The games sold pretty well compared to the games i listed. Where the sales have not reflected the quality of the games. All 5 games Ps3 owners need to at least rent to try. Not everyone has the same taste in games, so some of those you may not like. But they are all quality titles.
ps: BUY VALKYRIA CHRONICLES & thank me later!!!!

Just put heavenly sword back in to my PS3 and it just looks amazing! I have just recently upgraded to a HDTV (KDL-40Z4500) and just cannot believe how great this game is. The acting the levels of detail the kick ass moves it just all there.
Its a shame that the 2nd is not coming from what I hear

i completely agree with #1. I’m still waiting for Gameplay.co.uk to stock it so I can get it for a nice price.
February 18th, 2009 at 10:35 AM
lol yea, I do not have a ps3 but know very well of all of these games
February 18th, 2009 at 10:57 AM
I have to agree at least with Heavenly Sword and Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction. Both games were great and completely underrated, I know Heavenly Sword was short, but then again Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was short too and no one complaint too much..
I did try Valkria Chronicle’s demo it seemed pretty good, but with the current economy and my unemployed status it’s not a game I can afford right now.
February 18th, 2009 at 11:03 AM
Valkyria Chronicles I’d have to say was more of sleeper title than most of the games you mentioned. Especially if you take a look at Heavenly Sword, Rachet & Clank, and Motor Storm Pacific Rift. Sony didn’t do a very good job of finding the right marketing, but they did get the word out. Great blog and post. Look forward to more…
February 18th, 2009 at 11:10 AM
Well its a good thing I have all of those games lol.
And I must say I agree GET THOSE GAMES PEOPLE!!!
February 18th, 2009 at 12:48 PM
I’d tend to agree with R&C and VC.
I’d also throw in The Darkness, Folklore, Uncharted and Disgaea 3.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:06 PM
I’d also throw in Warhawk also.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:06 PM
Thank you for the info on VC.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:38 PM
I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword so agree with you there – nice hack n’slash to pass the time before God Of War 3.
Another game I felt was missed by many people because of poor reviews was Kane and Lynch – the controls were terrible but I thought the game itself was good with some cool levels.
February 18th, 2009 at 5:17 PM
I played Heavenly Sword during its first week of release and was quite glad that we rented it. I could even look past the weird “throwing hats to open doors” because the game was beautiful albeit short.
I agree with the #1 slot. My boyfriend picked up Valkyria Chronicles and has been riveted ever since. It has replay value as well, you can continue with some of the missions to unlock more of the end stories for the characters… plus it’s quite beautiful to look at.
