The pressure is mounting on Sony to announce a price-cut for the PlayStation 3. With analysts and developers such as EA Sports looking for a price cut, it comes as no surprise then that Sony is saying nothing regarding a price cut… well, not directly.
SCEA’s senior marketing VP Peter Dille has said in an interview with Bloomberg that developers want the PS3 to sell for free.
“Everybody in the development community would love for the PS3 to be free, so they could just sell razor blades,”
It comes off the back of the heels of comments from EA Sports President and former Xbox honcho Peter Moore saying that the PS3 has a long way to go with its pricing plans.
“Sony obviously still has a ways to go with their pricing,”
As for that price cut, Dille did say there was no immediate plans for a price cut but did however say that:
“Sony is concerned with profitability, as well as the installed base,”
Which may hint at a price cut down the line maybe after GDC or before E3.

Sony doesn’t have that far to go, knock $50.00 off and throw in a AAA title, or extra controller.
Can I be EA president now?
Dilles’ comments make him sound like an automaton, perhaps a cyborg of some sort.

The thing is, PS3 is selling very close to 360 at double the price.
Who is making more money?
Not to mention PSP and PS2 are still doing great (well PS2 is FINALLY dying a bit) and bringing in the cash for Sony.

I’m hoping that the PS4 utilizes much (if not all) of the same technology and costs a mere fraction of what the PS3 does. I know it sounds hopeful, but how awesome would it be to have a PS4 for $250! It would sell better than the next Nintendo & Microsoft.

Hardcor1981:
That is indeed the plan.
PS4 will be an upgraded CELL so it will take less time to develop for Sony and devs will be familiar with it AND it will be cheap to launch.
PS3 was the springboard for all the technology Sony is going to use in the future (CELL, Blu-Ray etc).
This was confirmed by head of PS dude that got moved to another section…lol sorry I forgot his name.
He also said “I already have the blueprints for PS7.”…So yeah, Sony is way ahead of us.

ps3 isnt that much more than the xbox. sony doesnt need a price cut and itll just hurt their profitability.
having the more expenisive console keeps all the annoying 10 year olds away, so i prefer it.

They are more expensive because it is a better machine than the competition..
