ahh well, sony needs this, but doesn’t at the same time… I’m sure a price drop will happen this year.

I for one hope they don’t lower the price. There is no reason they should cave into all the complainers who say its too expensive. They should just run there business the way they want and forget about everyone else. If people can’t afford the system then they probably should not be spending their money on games anyway.

They haven’t phased out any SKUs as of late, so there was no evidence of a price drop. It’s way too early to even be thinking about that, considering that Sony Computer Entertainment needs to, first and foremost, stay profitable. Sony Corporation as a whole is banking on their success.

The only way PS3 can hit $299 is if a slim-line version is released. It would allow profit margins to remain steady AND build consumer hype, just as the slim-line PS2 did.
