Cloud computing is still very much an emerging technology, and the direction that many companies are favoring for future products. Recently, Sony trademarked “PS Cloud.” The full details of what Sony plans on doing with this technology have not been announced. What we do know is that cloud computing allows for distributed processing of data. It is also the software behind the newly announced gaming service OnLive. Hopefully this will bring yet another groundbreaking experience to the PlayStation brand.
For those of you fearing that this means the end of physical media, remember that Sony does not see a digital-only distribution system becoming standard for at least another five years. It will be interesting to see whether this technology will strengthen Home and PSN as a whole.

Soounds interesting.
Computing and gaming have to go this way in the future, how else will big brother keep track of your every move….
I remember in 1994 an Apple sales rep telling some of us sales people at the time that this is where computing was going in the future, distributed model has basically been around since the IBM 3770. When you consider that virtual servers are related to the 3770 series OS model then, “Cloud Computing” on a cell processor should be a no brainer… Wonder how MS will change their console for the next wave of technology advances… Put the dilithium crystal back MR Spock…
I looked into this a little, but I’m still confused as to what it is. Would it be considered cloud computing if I try downloading a file from somewhere and it downloads from 5 different people who have also downloaded it? I don’t get it!
As long as they aren’t dark clouds….
ahhh christ, another thing for big brother to watch us with.
make good content, and how it gets here doesn’t matter to me.
I have 70 or so TV stations, but they all suck, the technology is cool
but good storytelling is where it’s at.
SolidCake, I have no idea what you’re talking about. What does good storytelling have to do with anything?! haha
Seems interesting, just another of future technology to come.
@SPD55: Wow, man. Nice information there. I hadn’t even thought of it, but that is a no brainer. +2
I also liked the article. I heard about Playstation doing some kind of digital distribution of media before but that was waaaaay back during the closed Home beta days and there was no name attached to it at that time. I forgot about it until I saw this and now I’m really interested again.
This like all advancements will be what we the customers make of it .
@Sneeches:
1984? lulz
If Sony starts using cloud computing soon I think they should start using this service to power Home right away.
The idea of not having to download a space before I go in or not having to wait to transport from room to room sounds like heaven (pun intended) to me. With news that they intend to introduce three new spaces each month having everything streaming from a server would be ideal. And it’s not like lag would be a huge issue since Home is not a twitch-gaming type of experience. Flying the Red Bull plane or riding in bumper cars (or whatever) doesn’t require split-second timing so even if it lagged for a second it would hardly be the end of the world.
This would also make PSP connectivity a non-issue.
Bring it on Sony!
