It seems like getting grilled by the guys at Penny-Arcade is more of an honor than an embarassment these days (many victims of their comic strips order a framed copy to cherish). This time they take on Eric Lempel’s PS3 firmware 2.70 announcement and give us a peek at what’s to come in the PS3′s future.

StalkingSilence compares the cartoon to Eric
While it’s all in good fun, I personally think the firmware is a step in the right direction and I welcome any addition to the PS3′s capabilities. Do any of you think 2.70 was a major technological disappointment or are you excited to see where the firmware takes us next?

Patents are a b!tch huh…
I think that the update is a step toward the in game voice chat. I remember that in the beginning was custom music, then Home, them etc, as soon as Sony give us the game voice chat the people are going to ask for something else. I think that Sony is doing a good job with all the feature that the PS3 has. But the update was not only he test messaging the offer a great feature for the backup of the movies that you have buy from the store, for me this huge. I don’t know but always is going to be complaint no matter what Sony do.
I think iFlash was talking about the Microsoft patents. Do they have a patent for in game voice chat? Is that possible? I know they have it for music, which is stupid. I agree with you guys, all the updates have been pretty good. I do so much more with my PS3 then watch games it is crazy!
The new chat is ****ty. You can talk about *******, but only one hooker at a time. My buddy, ***** is not allowed to say his own ******* name! Censorship *****, and Sony, you can go eat a ****.
You can’t say ******** but you CAN say nutsack. Very odd censorship. And lame.
***** Christ was a *** because he was Jewish. What the?? They censor “*****” but not “Christ”??
The text-messaging feature is just redundant…messaging is already in there. The other parts of the update are good, not great though. I just question the length of time it’s taking to get voice-messaging/voice-chat into the PS3. This feature should be here by now. I would love to at least hear WHY it’s taking so long. I would love some form of a party/party-chat system in place. It’s much easier to gather my friends together first, then enter a game.
That’s funny, I was just ranting to my wife about this. Why not just give us Voice chat first? Text is completely worthless. I understand some people might use it, but who the hell is going to pull this crap up while playing a game. The last thing I want is to get killed in an online match because Sony decided to implement older ways of communication. No thanks.
i guess Sony should never update at all… people and their bitching. Yes its not voice chat but the 16 people chat rooms are still very cool. Yes it sucks at times having to go to the XMB but thats why most all games have a pause button.
and text chat is not redundant, yes there was already messaging between two people, but this adds 16 people.
@John Draisey
Complaining? Complaining would be me saying that it works too slow, etc…
What I am is disappointed. And if you listened to Penny-Arcade’s podcast, you’d see that them making fun of Sony isn’t something to be proud of. It is most definitely not an honor, but an outright embarrassment. Either way, Sony should not mope about this and neither should we, if anything it should light a fire under their asses.
Pistolaero has a right to “complain” if he so chooses. I’m so used to defending firmware updates to people around the web, being that I’m a programmer, and all people love to do these days is nitpick and cry about not getting what they want, while I try to explain that it’s not as simple as clapping your hands and making it available. However, looking at the photo gallery update and now this update, if it doesn’t clearly scream out “We’re just giving you filler material while we get our asses in gear,” then I don’t know what else to tell you. Text chat? Seriously?
People getting angry over these FW updates need to be introduced to a little thing I like to call, “reality.” I’ve been looking around various message boards and forums since this update launched, and I’ve come to the conclusion that people are out of their minds.
No matter what Sony does, people get mad because it’s not EXACTLY what they wanted. It’s like they just want everything handed to them, and that’s just stupid. THAT’S NOT THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS! Is Sony listening to the fans? You’re damned right they are – many of the updates have included features that were directly asked for by PlayStation.Blog commenters (TheHater, back me up on this). Just because no one is snapping their fingers and magically creating cross game voice chat it doesn’t mean they’re not. Eric said over 4 months ago that it was being worked on. Any of you complainers think you can do a better job? Go program it yourself. Oterwise, shut up.
I swear some people in this generation of gamers make me embarrased to refer to myself as one. Grow. Up.
i like firmware updates, step by step we are getting to the perfect console
The way I see it, if the console was worth a purchase before Sony started adding features then what the hell are people complaining about now for. Just take your FREE updates and be happy you are getting anything at all. Sorry if I sound bitter but this kind of thing just drives me crazy.
16 person chat rooms = definite step in the right direction. it just needs to be fleshed out a bit more. i will say this. i chatted with a friend using it yesterday for about 20 mins. at this point i think it’s boarderline meh. there’s totally room for improvement. fortunately Sony is damn good at improving things. i will be very surprised if the leave this function ‘as is’. although this should have been the big feature, i feel the rest of the stuff included in 2.70 made up for any shortcomings text chat currently has.
I just find it funny that anyone would get upset about a firmware update. I mean, I bought a PS3 to play games and watch blu-rays on. The ability to do 16-person text chat is nice, and the ability to do in-game voice chat would be nice. But then, if I’m playing a game I don’t want to be interrupted. So….
I think that this update was pretty good, but there are somethings that I don’t like about it.
-I don’t like how they sort the friends list now. It is much harder to find friends that are offline. I wish that you had the option to choose between time and alphabetical while keeping the online friends at the top of the friends list.
-I also don’t like how all of the Japanese names on your friends list are not Japanese anymore. I do not understand why they did this. Anyone know?
Other than that I think that this update was very good.
I’m going to explain why a lot of the “In game text chat is stupid” fails epically.
1. This is a way to get multiple people able to communicate at once to decide to get into a game.
2. This is a way to organize what will be set up.
3. It’s private communication if necessary.
4. MOST GAMES HAVE VOICE CHAT IF YOU ARE IN THE GAME ALREADY!
So really.. if they’re complaining that they can’t communicate with people in a match they’re retarded.
I WISH this feature was here when RE 5 came out because people with mics couldn’t communicate very quickly or effectively like that. This would have been MUCH easier than sending messages in the subject line.
So the only argument left is “I can’t play Ninja Gaiden Sigma and talk to someone who is playing Killzone 2 with voice chat”
Anything else is moot. Don’t want to use the controler to type? 10 dollar usb keyboard will fix that.
I swear one day Wall-E will become a true to life story if people can’t stop this sort of stuff. Well I’m going to go and toss on more gigs of music and video to my 320GB PS3, and watch Hulu and Youtube on my HD t.v. while I clean my room because damn it, I CAN!
LOL at Makai. good post .
I think every Firmware update that we have is a welcome addition to an already awesome experience known as PSN.
that is my official Sony approved response.
lol
Voice chat woulda been better if the PS3 mini keyboard attachment thing cost less; honestly, it’s almost as expensive as the controller, and it is kind of useless except for internet and messaging, and now, chatting.
