In a surprising turn of events, the PS2 has actually mananged to outsell the Xbox 360 in Japan, despite only 5,246 PS2 units being sold last week. With the new price drop that went into effect, PS2 sales should see a healthy boost from here on out. Xbox 360 sales have been in a steady decline within the region, so the situation may become normal for the next few months. PS3 also seems to be doing quite well.

Here is the full list of Last Week’s sales, according to Media Create:

  • DSi/ 57,401
  • PSP/ 54,148
  • PS3/ 22,825
  • Wii/ 17,276
  • DSL/ 8,408
  • PS2/ 5,246
  • 360/ 4,849

  1. Microsoft just cannot catch a break in Japan. Good to see PS3 still having a strong run.

anything Final Fantasy will spike Japanese sales! I don’t like turn-based games, so I’m not into FF, but I liked watching the Advent flick.

Interesting numbers. I mean, it is Japan, but it’s the PS2! I can’t believe that thing is still moving units, and it definitely will continue with the price drop. What’s going on with the PSP also? Numbers have looked good there too. I can’t even comment on the PS3 frequently outselling the Wii. Anyone’s best guess is better than mine, thought I’m waiting to see what numbers the Final Fantasy bundle pulls in too.

  4. Sony is doing pretty well I see. Nice to hear for a change.

I like to see Microsoft talk about the sales in Japan rather then the U.S. and Europe.

Sony is doing great in Japan. It’s nice to see. And I’m so glad the PS2 outsold the Xbox 360, it’s hilarious.

    That is so funny.
Is there like a 360 support group in Japan, ya know where all 5 of them get together and play games.
    lol

  8. i hope the money sony gets from japan’s market covers their loss in America’s market
