PSLS previously reported on a rumor that Patapon 2 would not be released on UMD, and instead be available as a downloadable title via PSN. And according to Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA, everything we’ve heard is true.

“We’re considering a digital-only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one-time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content,” Seybold told IGN. “The downloadable game will be available on May 5th at both retail and via the PlayStation Store. We remain focused on providing superior games and entertainment experiences in both the UMD and digital formats and are working closely with our partners to deliver the best PSP line up in our history.”

Will you still be picking up this title, or avoid it due to its UMD-less status?

I wish it was available on the PS3, even Patapon 1 would be nice.

Day 1 purchase either way. I’d rather have the PSN title for the ease of access… but i”ll have to bootleg it after purchase because the only PSP I have right now is hacked and won’t play my legal copies of games unless they are UMD, but I would rather have it on my memory stick than have to carry around extra UMDs. Big fan of downloadable.

When I buy my next PSP I will have the legal digital copy to use. So that’s my preference. Puchase the download copy and see if it works, if it doesn’t, bootleg it. I’ve done that with other games too. It’s not illegal if I buy the game anyway technically. I don’t bootleg them to steal, I bootleg them because I either can’t get them, or I don’t know if I want them yet.

No, it’s illegal either way. I know there’s an old law that says it’s fine to make a copy of a game so long as you purchase and have the original in your possession.

But it doesn’t protect against downloading games (regardless if you own it or not), as that concept didn’t exist at the time.

I sure wish I could bootleg exotic cars for all the reasons MakaiOokami bootlegs games.

Day 1 downloadable purchase too, and day 2 or 3 if it’s ONLY at UMD.
And as the others, would love to see it on 1080 PS3 version.
