With the PS3 entering its third year on the market, it looks like Sony’s long term strategy is coming into fruition. Though their immediate lineup includes the likes of Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, and God of War III, Sony also has plans to bring in alternate demographics. SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller had this to say:

“There’s certainly a line-up of very strong family-friendly titles that we’re looking at for PS3 in our continuing effort to appeal to that casual consumer.

We’ve captured the hardcore. The install base we have now tells us that the hardcore’s purchased. We’re moving on now to continue to support them with a tremendous line-up of games, but also look at softer brands that maybe we had with PS2 franchises we’re bringing over to PS3, or new IP.”

This is very similar to what they did with the PS2 during its later years, and shows that SCE is determined to expand the PS3 userbase by injecting more variety into its gaming catalog. We saw hints of this with last year’s EyePet trailer, and E3 2009 should give us a more solid view of what’s to come.

  1. well a good way to do this is to stop supporting the PS2 and try to push all those users into a PS3

Well if they bring out Eye Pet trainer here if SCEA would intergrate that into Home that would be a big plus for getting the casual gamer into the PS3 since the competition is not “The Evil Empire” but the casual gamer clan of Zelda. If Sony could tap that market with new IP or gaining Multi-platform titles from Nintendo then that would be a coup that would be worth tapping into…

Maybe a new controller for smaller hands would help or a new style of controller that would allow smaller hands to work the controls without stressing the parts as what happens now.

Even a light gun for some shooting games aimed at kids like arcade style target shooters that were available for the Game Duck Hunt etc.

  3. Haha, yeah they don’t advertise all that much. But based on sales, word of mouth seems to be working out. They’ve sold what, 24 million PS3s so far? I say they should hold back on advertising until E3 rolls around.

if you want casual gamers, how about casual games, like darts, checkers, chess, pool, pinball,
shuffleboard, scrabble, monopoly, really guys, it’s not rocket science.
If you want mom to buy it for the family remove the head shots, replace with familiar, family friendly games.

  5. @SolidCake
I actually wonder if they could release a compilation title that included all the casual games you listed, and for a reasonable price. Say $40?

Just call it the Family Pack or something.

If the PS2 is still selling at a high rate, why discontinue it? The money Sony is making from the PS2 is probably making up for the money Sony is losing with every PS3 sold. In my opinion, its a nice cycle.

    @TheHater

A price drop would be nice, but Sony isn’t going to lower the price until the economic outlook brightens a little bit. I think a price drop would do more damage than good at this point. Advertise? I agree with you.

stop making ps2 and ps2 games…force your customers to upgrade to a ps3.

  8. I can see what they’re going for but this announcement comes too close to the recent price drop of the PS2 slim. It’s somewhat of a contradicting move, in that by them lowering the price of the PS2, I think that would draw more casual gamers to the less expensive alternative to buying a 3 or 4 hundred dollar machine for casual gaming. It’s good they’re going in this direction but it’s too soon after the recent PS2 price cut. Either that, or the price should have been reduced longer ago.

Give away a FREE KITTEN !!!!

With every PS3 sold evreybody loves KITTENS

  11. Dan Massi says:

I don’t think Sony will stop supporting the PlayStation 2 until sales really start to drop. Once they do, then they have to focus all their power on the PS3 and PSP.

  12. @Dan Massi

Yeah, I agree. Dropping the PS2, despite it still selling very well, would be a very bad business move.

I just don’t understand this mentality of paying hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for any product, for any person whether it’s a Wii a 360 or a PS3 and skipping the whole price comparison, feature comparison, and just really spending time learning the ins and outs of different products.

But then a lot of people like wasting money. I know this because I was telling someone that he could get a cable in half a week (HDMI) and that no HDMI cable works better than any other within 6 feet and he could save himself 30 dollars by not buying our store’s cable but just ordering it off of mono price or amazon for less than 5 dollars after shipping. He didn’t care. I wish I had mine with me I would have just said “K give me 20 dollars and you can get this one it’s the same cable”

Consumers drive me insane cause so many will just buy a game because “Oh I like the title and box art’ I”m really picky with games… Probably cause I have so many hundreds from my PS2 and DC days back when I was in HIgh School and had so much more time. Now that I have less time and money to spend with my games.
