The Real Deal on the Next PSP

Sony has contended there is no PSP2 and they are telling the cold hard truth. There won’t be a PSP2 coming for at least a couple more years. That doesn’t mean that some new PSP hardware isn’t headed our way soon enough. Think more aesthetic changes, more along the lines of DS > DSLite but more substantial of a change. We here at PlayStation LifeStyle are ready to “debunk” or “confirm” some of the rumors that are floating around the net.
We are not at liberty to divulge our sources. Rest assured all will be revealed during E3.
Some of the details I cannot divulge, but we will try our best to let you know what it is, and what it isn’t. We recently noticed PSPWorld’s attempt at “Separating Fact and Fiction” regarding the PSP2, we call it an attempt because it’s pretty much all wrong.
Let’s take a look at what PSPWorld calls “Fact”
- UMD is dead. Sorry folks, UMD IS dead, they got this one right…
- Touch Screen. PSPWorld states that this is a given as this seems to be the trend the industry is heading towards. Well Sony boasts it’s “Like No Other” and that is the truth, Sony doesn’t follow trends, it sets them. There will be NO touchscreen in the next PSP.
- “Monstrous Hardware Specs” If that were the case, it WOULD be the PSP2, and the next PSP is NOT the PSP2, it’s not the PSP-4000 either. In fact it’s something entirely unique.
Now let’s move onto their “Fiction”:
- Release before Christmas 2009. We don’t know an exact release date, but it’s much sooner than anyone is expecting. One thing we are sure of is that it’s definitely going to be before Holiday 2009.
- Internal HDD. If UMD is dead, how exactly does PSPWorld think we are going to get our games on the new PSP? Sure Sony could pack in some form of memory stick with the new PSP, but that isn’t practical. As Dave Perry has mentioned in the past, look for some type of solid state memory on board. It will also take some form of removable flash memory.
- Phone included. They got this one right also, but it wasn’t a hard guess. There will be no built in phone in the next PSP, however you can always use Skype.
Here is a few more things we would like to touch on.
- Sliding Screen. They call this fiction, and unfortunately we cannot comment on this. We have to leave it at that.
- Dual Analog Sticks. Nope, not happening, at least not until the PSP2 which this isn’t. Adding a second analog stick would alienate the current PSP lineup, which is going to get much more robust later this year. A lineup, that will play just fine on this new PSP, which is based on current PSP tech.
Last thing we would like to leave you off with is…
We all know E3 is GOing to be filled with HEAVY announcements, potentially COLOSSAL even if we’re lucky. Don’t let all the MASSIVE amounts of rumors RAIN on your parade. ja this was exactly what i was thinking, especially about the touchscreen not being there, im so tired of almost everyone confusing PSP 4000 with PSP2. Where it would be a new console, not a redesign. It wouldnt make sense to add a touchscreen or second analog stick to a 4000, 5000 etc because if new games used them its be called alienating a fanbase. Now if that happened to a NEW PSP, then it makes sense.

hey sev, i thought u guys were quitting all posts from your insiders. i like them and hope they keep coming back but just wondering. anyway looks good. hopefully i can get some money by time it hits stores.
While a second joystick would alienate older PSP games, I don’t think it would hurt anything. There’s still alot of new users waiting to get their hands on a PSP and it’s not like they’re getting rid of a joystick, they’re just adding an extra one, so games could still be played how they are normally played. It would even be nice if it was like PS1 games on the PSP where there is a controls option to change the triangle, circle, square, X buttons to function like the right joystick. All I know is I really can’t wait for E3 this year.

Go, Heavy, Colossal, Massive, Rain, Time, Tune, Little, Big, and Motion. Heavy Rain, LittleBigPlanet, and MAG. I don’t really know about Time, Tune, and Motion. You have me pumped for E3 though Sev. Don’t tell us everything before E3 though, i’d like to be hit with some suprises
now sev, do you know if all UMD games (Past, Present, future UMD Games) will be available at the PSP Store?
and do you know if we would be able to transfer our UMD games to this PSP?

This wouldn’t be a day one purchase for me. I would have to track down a shipment to hijack en route from factory to retail so I could have it BEFORE launch. Man, I’m still rocking the PSP-1000 and this baby would make me upgrade in a heartbeat.

Right there with you. I still have the 1000 model myself, and nothing I’ve seen so far made me go, “I need to upgrade,” until now.
What?! I can’t believe all of the positive responses to this. Are you serious, NO TOUCHSCREEN. What trend do you expect Sony to implement into the PSP2? Mind control? You definitely won’t be wiggling it like a WiiMote. Another thing, you say another analog would alienate the current PSP library. Let me ask you this, because the PS2 or PS3 controllers have dual analogs, does that mean you can’t play PS1 titles? Remember, the original PS1 controller did not have dual analogs. When it was introduced, games we’re still in development for that system. Lastly, it will be shown at E3 this year. Sony already said it if you read between the lines of their E3 announcement, saying it will be their biggest ever. I agree the system will not come out Christmas of this year, but it will come out in Spring or Summer of 2010.

Only thing I’m worried about is the fact I already own a PSP 2000 and had a PSP 1000 before that. I have abot 20 UMD games and a hell of a lot of UMD movies but the next iteration doesn’t have a UMD slot? So I can’t play any of my titles? Sorry Sony, but there doesn’t seem to be a logical reason to upgrade and I have the feeling this will be the same with a lot of people in my position.

I think that’s the point. There’ll still be a normal PSP (the 3000 series, which is great already) but this new one is for people who don’t like to carry around game discs. I don’t have many PSP games, so I’d buy it.

TUNE probably equals some sort of mobile Guitar Hero or Sing Star type of game. A wile ago I saw a mini guitar hero (about the size of two packs of cig’s) being sold at Blockbuster, so it wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to me.
How many guesses are wrong, can we get a hint?

No second analog is total BS!
The only way it would alienate the current user base and software is if there were no Analogs.
Even if you have 2 you can still build the game to only recognize the one and make the other static.
Whereas if you have 2 then future developers have an option to use both as opposed to just one.
SO Pissed about no 2nd analog.

Ok, so there are some things that we already know, regardless of those clues – namely that LittleBigPlanet is confirmed for the PSP and that there are rumors of another GoW coming soon…
Beyond that, Heavy Rain is a pretty clearly implied here… Shadow of the Colossus seems close, but Colossal could be something else as well. Massive could be MAG or any number of MMOs… right?
Then, of course, we’re left with TIME, TUNE & MOTION.
TUNE? As in TV TUNER perhaps? MOTION seems like it will have the same capabilities as the PS3 controller… perhaps. TIME – could be a game…
BUT – I see this as the “game changer” announcement. Seems like software is not all that this sucker is capable of. Why bother focusing on software, commenters? There is obviously something else going on with the new unit.
I think that the new PSP will not only be able to play PSP games, but also **stream** games ala OnLive from the GDC. Without a citation, I can vaguely remember that this technology has been referred to recently in Sony patents or trademarks…
Essentially, the PSP would stream compressed video from a game while transmitting the controller signals over the wireless network. The processing would all be done on the PS3 – meaning that one could play a game that required mucho processing power without being restrained by the internals of the PSP unit.
Anyway, that’s my idea. The screen is pretty small to stream actual PS3 games, but I perhaps…

those are some pretty cool ideas you got there, although the OnLive-esque feature seem a little too far fetched. I don’t think Sony would go in that direction. The TV tuner idea would be nice. Your motion idea seems like it could happen; Adding an accelerometer to the the PSP wouldn’t be terribly expensive and it would add a whole new set of features that Devs can use to create games. I have no idea what TIME means, but maybe it has to do with a new alarm clock feature. That would be awesome!
