Sure, there’s plenty of rumors stating the PS3 will land a price drop at this convention, or the next convention, or some convention in the future. But seriously, waiting like that isn’t healthy, especially with the slew of PS3 classics being released month after month. True, $400~500 is a lot to swallow, but there’s a solution to this problem.
Gamestop is holding a special deal where if you trade in a PS2, along with three games, they’ll give you $100 off the purchase of a brand new PS3. Considering the current retail price of the PS2, this is probably the easiest trade-in you’ll ever make. If your PS3 funds are just $50~100 below what you need, go to Gamestop and check out this option. You won’t regret it.

Pretty cool. GameStop can’t offer this deal for very long though I bet.
Interesting, but I’d rather try my luck at selling a PS2 with some games on eBay…
better than a sharp stick to the eye.
This is why the deal is PERFECT.
See my PS2 had fallen quite a few feet on multiple occasions due to people not being able to understand why it’s a bad idea to run in front of the t.v. when someone has long cables going from one side of the room to the other. I did have extension cords so I take no blame since I couldn’t find decent wireless at the time for a decent price.
My PS2 was probably around 6 years old and EASILY had over 1000 hours. 300 on Star Ocean, 600 between Disgaea 1 and 2. No those are not astronomically increased numbers. The Star Ocean is a combination of 3 30 hour game saves, 1 160 hour game save. 1 60 hour save. Why so many saves? Well I was trophy whoring htat game before trophies were important. I had over 80 percent and the outfits to prove it.
Anyway… I had another 80 games with hours in the hundreds, multiple play throughs, games that don’t keep track of time, days I just didn’t turn off the PS2 cause I fell asleep or went to school andc couldnt’ save, etc…
So I traded in the PS2, the controller, and the 2 mem cards required for the 100 dollar discount.
Don’t forget that because it’s a trade in, you don’t have to pay tax on that 100 either. I also traded in all accessories that wouldn’t work with the PS3. The deal was well worth it back then since the PS3 was 600 (after trade in stuff I paid 400 AFTER tax with all the crap I traded in (mostly mem cards and they let me xfer the data there) so… My other option was to essentially wait till the PS2 died and buy a new one, and then later on buy a PS3 wasting 200 dollars (100 dollars worth of savings AND 100+ for a new PS2) take advantage of the deal and get a new PS3.
So if you’re like me and you worry about the state of your PS2 and how many hours you can get on it, then trade it in before you’re stranded on a desert Island without 1.
I know it’s the 1 thing I’d bring. I’d fashion myself an electricity generating bike, and find some way to get it working XD. I’ll make a t.v. out of trees and leaves if I have to.
Anyway not as good a deal as it was back then, but a good deal for the right kind of people. I was one of them.
NICE, get rid of your junky ps2 and save towards a ps3….that’s a deal if you ask me!!!
Pretty cool but I already have a ps3.
my problem is that the ps3′s now are all completely non backwards compatible. I suppose this is a good idea if you can live without it for a year or 2 until the ps2 comes down to gamecube pricing (cough $30), but I just have way to many ps2 games to give this up.
I’m guessing the deal will end when GameStop has too many PS2′s to know what to do with.
@MakaiOokami
“people not being able to understand why it’s a bad idea to run in front of the t.v.”
I have had the same problem with these “people”. Still to this day even with the wireless bluetooth ps3 they still have this idea that is ok to be running in front of the TV. Uhhh!!!
Back on topic its a very tempting idea to trade in a PS2. I do have an extra one the original fat one.
Good deal.
