In a recent interview, Sony CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, talked about the PSN, and more specifically, their plans for the growth onto other platforms.
Sony’s plans for the Playstation Network include turning it into a more “open” platform, and expanding it onto other platforms.
“We developed brand new, absolutely incredible technology for the PlayStation 3 (PS3), but the cost was high. We’ve adopted a slightly different approach now, and are evolving the PS3 into a platform for web services.
A lot of people thought Sony’s content download service was doomed, but it’s in a pretty good place right now in the form of the PlayStation Network, available to PS3 users for network gaming, video, etc. The DRM is based on Marlin, an open scheme developed by consumer electronics companies and other companies.
What does all this mean? Very simply, it means that Sony has begun the transition from a closed system to an open one.
Next we will be expanding the PlayStation Network to hardware other than the PS3, because the number of PS3 units sold puts a limit on the scale of the network possible. Sony has a vertical structure for each product line, an organisational structure that resists change, so it will take time to achieve this network growth. However, a large number of employees share my opinion on this.”
It’s good to see Stringer pushing communication and synergy within his company, and we can’t wait to see the exciting results.

If I could login to psn from my Sony tv, blu ray, Walkman, vaio, camera, and what ever else Sony makes that’s cool. As long as the network stays free and is strong enough to handle the load.
@ mcx great idea. That would be awesome.
bring it sony! this is totally awesome
Sounds great to me!!
Let’s see that PSN itself gets upgraded first, eh Stringer?
To me it is sounding like they’re trying to make PSN more like steam and Xbox Live. If I’m understanding this properly we might be able to get Trophies on PC games eventually.
I think all that they’re doing with the PS3 and PSP right now is fantastic. With upcoming cross game voice chat and the PSPGo, along with the awesome line up for the upcoming year…Sony is upping the anti for console competition!
maybe use the PSN to download to your PC? is that what he means?
hey guys, how about you make the PSN up to par with xbox live and then think about branching it out. Either way, you guys have some good ideas, but how about building a solid foundation first.
PSN at McDonalds:
“Would you like some Pixeljunk with that?”
Hells yeah free downloadable’s from any where on anything . I’m in

Contrary to what many people say, I don’t see the advantage of adding cross-game invites, since you would still have to change whatever game you are currently playing, and we already have the ability to send messages during gameplay. However, A party system is a necessity, in my opinion. Live feels so much more like an inviting community with features like the party system, private chat, and sponsored/developer game nights and events. There should also be some type of leaderboard in place to look at things like trophy levels, gameplay hours, genre gameplay hours, or gamer of the week stats, and all of these statistics should support gamers who are not on your friends list, again, to spread the community feel of PSN, or lack thereof. I’d like to hear your thoughts if you read this.
I would like to see a netflix style service provided by Sony, with the OnDemand style they have currently. They would need a larger movie base but it could work imo.
I hope to see more party interaction like KwietStorm is talking about.
I have a felling this will result in something sweet.
Thanks, Evo, I should do that.
