A sizable number of PSP-related news and rumors have been making their rounds on the Internet. But a survey that some PSP owners have received has a lot more merit than your typical rumor. Could a Sony-run PSP game rental service, similar to GameFly but in digital download form, be in the works?
If this survey is any indication, Sony could be testing the waters to see how receptive current PSP owners are to such an idea. Issues such as price per month, a limit to the number of games you could rent, and such are mentioned:
“The service will enable you to download a fixed number of games during your subscription period (the subscription period might renew weekly, monthly, or some other time period), you will be able to change the games you have chosen for the download once your subscription term renews. At launch there will be an extensive catalog of games to choose from, with more titles being added to the catalog each month.”
Would you be willing to sign up for such a service? If so, what plan would you pick? Take a look at the choices in the gallery below!
hmmm interesting. dont know which one i would go with… probably the one where you can rent the game upon release though.
I really like the idea of this. I don’t know how big the average PSP game is…
If they’re too big, I can see it not working in my country (Australia) as we have pretty expensive and limited (download quotas) internet. Nothing a few 700Mb or so games would harm, but still…
Alex
well if they are going totoally digital download, with no UMD drive, then this would make sense
hmm interesting lol
depends on the price, and how long it lasts.
Looking at those numbers about UMD and games I would hazard a guess that digital downloads are cheaper than creating a smaller disc format and I would not be surprised to see games going back to a “cartridge”/memory stick format. When 2gb sticks are easily purchased and game sizes less than 1gb you could conceivably start to move to a dual media format since the games are downloaded from the Net to the memory stick installed in the system. So having games on stick and download for rental would make sense… With both stick and digital coming with a DRM system which would stop copyright theft…
Yes I definitely would because it is much easier than waiting for the rent to come by mail.
probably only if Home Rewards become features. I like to own most of the games I play.
Thats a good idea. but with internet caps becoming redundant it may not pay off. especially when they started testing cap limits in the US.
Sounds like a cool option for those who can’t buy new every time.
Quite innovative, indeed.
Thanks for the info Paulmichael.
Quite reasonable sizes really, and I love PSN games, so this would be pretty cool.
What’d be even better is if you could hire the game, download it etc. Then if you decide you like it ‘some’ of the rental cost is taken off of the price to buy the full game (I’d expect a download key like they currently do on PSN games)
Kinda like a ‘paid for demo’
– or a deposit lol
