New German Law May Force Crytek to Relocate
Bundestag, which is Germany’s equivalent of Parliament, is under request from the country’s 16 Interior Ministers to ban both the distribution and production of violent videogames. And law stands to not only harm retailers and annoy gamers, but shut down German game developers as well.
Crytek is the most renowned developer residing in Germany, famous for their groundbreaking work on Crysis and their upcoming multiplatform title, Crysis 2. Should the law pass, Crytek would be forced to either completely outsource the development of Crysis 2, or relocate, as would other developers who create violent videogames. The Interior Ministers are working fast to get the law passed before the September 23rd elections, and we can only hope that they fail.

Laws like these can not change the fact that human nature when it feels wronged will take revenge on the closest thing it can strike out at. But there is strong anecdotal evidence to lead one to believe that “todays” children have not learned that video games are not the real world. Maybe if parents would limit the time and type of games that children play then it might not have to be legislated. But with the world economy as bad as it is and not getting much better parents have to work to long hours so be effective in disciplining children to grow with a moral “spirit’ that sees violence as a last resort instead of the first.
If the law passes then some state in the US should find a new company and give them a healthy tax package to become a member of the US developer world…
The draft states that they want to ban games and stop the production of those that are depicting the deaths of humans or human-like creatures … so it’s not just Crytek and shooters, they are also targeting games like World of Warcraft for example. Well I hope it’s the usual “Let’s throw our weight around before the elections”, most of the minsters probably never used their PCs for anything but office work, and never had a controller in their hands. Plus the public is as uniformed as they are, so they support pretty much anybody who links killer games with the “resulting” violent behavior and rampages in schools with their votes. It’s gun control and social environment / care we have to focus on. It’s not like the father of the last guy going on a killing spree was a member of a marksman club here in Germany and had enough weapons at home to support a small army.
this kind of shit is so ignorant and annoying….. its more likely for violent people to seek out violent video games than for violent videogames to actually make people violent. what a bunch of morons.
