Clearing out that inventory, getting ready for… PS3 Slim?
Most likely, it is my opinion that the new price point will actually be a new SKU which would be the long awaited and recently leaked PS3 Slim. It would be a natural, since last year at this time, August -September, they introduced the new 80gb SKU last year to replace the 40gb as a way to fight the M$ price cut for the x-Bot. This is the way to drop the price without actually dropping the price, give more value for the same price.
Now with the rumors of the Slim and Price Cuts it would be logical to think that they would be both, but Sony could cut the price to clear out the warehouses on the older models just before introducing a new SKU. They could also wait for the TGS, which happens Sept 24-27th this year, to introduce the Slim version. They have already reduced the cost of the manufacturing process with the new smaller die sizes for the Cell and the GPU. They also have removed some hardware like the second FW chip so that the HDD is now required for files of the FW to be stored, this reduces the cost and allowed them to redesign the system board for a cost reduction, since this also made upgrading the HDD easier and faster, removing the HDD cradle thus reducing costs again…
It is time for a price reduction at least whether they release the slim this year is another topic…

it’s actually not that great of a deal when you consider the upcoming price drop and the news of the MLB ’09: The Show and Quantum of Solace bundle for $399. If you can get a game and a blu ray movie for only $50 more, why not?? Especially since you could sell both items if you don’t want them and come out actually paying less than $349 for the PS3.
i wouldn’t call 50$ massive, but either way that’s a nice thing to see.

Come on how about a PS3 with TWO controllers for a total of 250 dollars?
You guys really need to book mark the Cheapskate and pay more attention to Sonystyle. They do periodic sales where you can get 150 dollar credit on a Sony credit card (perfect for PS3 transactions and PSP transactions) when you buy something more than 200 dollars. So.. that brings a 400 dollar PS3 down to 250 dollars. Free shipping….
