Next Need for Speed Gets the Burnout Touch

Word has gotten out that the next Need for Speed game will developed by Burnout: Paradise developer, Criterion Games.

The surprise came from EA’s COO John Pleasants during a William Blair Growth Stock Conference presentation. This is what he had to say.

“We’ve taken the Burnout team and combined it with our Need For Speed franchise. So we now have that in our favor because that Burnout team is probably one of the more online-centric and notably high-quality game developers that we have out at Criterion.”

If Criterion Games really is in charge of the next Need for Speed, the franchise is certainly in good hands. And assuming Slightly Mad Studios is hired for more installments, EA would be able to release a new NFS title every year, similar to what Activision does with the Call of Duty series.

wonder how this will affect burnout paradise

It’s weird. Need For Speed, to me, has been so deep in the mud for so long now, that I’ve had nothing else to wish for but for the series to get back on track, no pun intended. But, sprinkling it with Burnout flavor isn’t what would be good for it, in my opinion. Now that’s not to say that is what is going to happen, but if that team is working on it, 2+2=? And on a side note, I hope this wouldn’t delay any potential prospects of the next Burnout.

  3. I just feel they should axe NFS and build us the next burnout paradise… Was never a NFS fan.

  4. Awesome! I haven’t played a NFS title since Underground 2 on my Game Cube and I LOVE Burnout Paradise. Best racing game I think I ever played, if only it had customization…

new content for Burnout today, btw :-)

  6. This is good news … NFS has always been a great racing series, it will only get better with the master minds of Burnout Paradise making it for us.

    @ Jeneric

it wont effect burnout paradise unless they do some form on add on to need for speed.

    good idea tho.

For those of you wondering…this won’t affect Burnout Paradise at all given that the next Burnout is already coming. I believe Big Surf Island is the last big DLC for Paradise.

  9. Thats amazing news, the NFS franchise may come back to its many loving fans that the original titles had and jump back into the racing light and shine like it used to. Thats some of the best news the NFS name has had in….well since NFS left the PC.

Yeah just kill NFS and replace with burnout.

First let me say burnout paradise is THE best racingngame I have ever played, hands down! The ONLY improvements that could be made are in-depth customization, and a ReAL crash mode, not a big fan of showtime. I think each intersection should have had a separate crash scenario for it, although they had to work around the limitations of the xbox 360 lol! The last great NFS game was Most Wanted, since it was the last one that had a good customization feature, the only noteable customization feature that wasn’t on there was vinyl tweaking. But the games are completely different! Burnout is geared towards intense racing at high speeds and amazing wreck scenarios, IE takedowns. On the other hand NFS was geared toward story and customization since the story was all about the street scene, the two go and in hand.

If they want a truly great NFS I don’t think hiring Burnout team is the answer. They need to go back to the original formula, create and immersive story, with a fully fleshed out customization mechanic, even the unnecessary stuff like lights and speakers, the whole deal, and they’ll have a great NFS to bring it back to he top!
