The NPD numbers for the month of May, have been released. Can you guess which PS3 exclusive made it into the top 5?

If you guessed inFamous, you are correct! Cole managed to edge out at number 5 for the month, selling 175,900 units.

On the console side, the Playstation 3 managed to sell 131,000 consoles, the Playstation 2 sold a solid 117,000 consoles, and the PSP a respectable 100,000 units. Speaking for the NPD group, Anita Frazier talks about the month’s sluggish numbers :

“The video games industry continues to struggle with difficult comparisons to last year, and this is the first month that industry sales have dipped below $1B since August 2007. May is typically one of the lowest revenue-generating months in any given year for the industry in general.

Every category declined versus a year ago with the exception of portable hardware sales which was bolstered by the continued strong sales of the Nintendo DS including both the DSi and the Lite.

Unit sales declined less than dollar sales did. The dollar sales decline was exacerbated by a decline in average retail prices for almost all of the categories.”

  1. Pretty damn good for inFAMOUS considering it was released late in the month. PSP sales are definately not good, which really has me questioning Sony’s decision to release the Go! @ $249.99.

I really likes the look of the PSPGo!, but I think its got a rough product lifecycle ahead of it. I will be doing my part in helping it out, and have already ordered it. Just have to wait and see how the rest of the market receives it.

  2. [...] Compared with last month’s numbers, which represented the month of May, the PSP sold 63,100 more units this month, while the PS3 and PS2, respectively, sold 33,700 consoles and 35,700 consoles more this month. [...]
