Activision‘s sequel to one of the best first-person shooters of this generation, Modern Warfare 2, is already guarrenteed a blockbuster hit. But will it be the best-selling title of the year?

Mike Hickey of Janco Partners financial analyst firm has set a sales prediction for Modern Warfare 2 at 11.1 million units by the time the calendar year is over, besting even the record breaking sales of Grand Theft Auto IV.

“We believe Modern Warfare 2 will likely be the largest video game release for 2009. For the Company’s fiscal Q409 period (Dec. ending), we anticipate the sell through to consumers of 11.1 million units for an estimated retail value of $803 million and sell-in approximating 12.4 million units, for an approximated sales value of $666 million (we assume demand is 90% of supply).”

It certainly will be interesting to see the sales of this game since it will be put up against a slew of other blockbuster titles such as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Assassin’s Creed 2, Activision’s own Guitar Hero 5, and even Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Sure, genre differences make some of these titles uncomparable to each other, but since they’re all coming out this holiday season they will definitely affect each other’s overall sales.

Holy sh*t! That is a LOT of units.

It better live to the hype it’s creating.

idk so far this game does not look that great. I am sure the online will be amazing like the last one but the single player does not look like a call of duty game it looked more like a bond game at some points. And all of the cammera angles were weird. But it will sell a ton even if it sucks, which it probably wont.

  3. I will bet the over. You forgot to mention MAG, which reminds me, WTF is Sony thinking releasing MAG anywhere near this spectacle? This and MAGs relatively weak showing at E3 has really got me worrying about MAG’s potential for success. I really hope Im wrong.

  4. they also forgot bioshock 2 is out 30th October which is close to cod release and bioshocks a great game so I don’t think they will sell the most I belive uncharted will sell the most it looks amazing and the online beta is great.

IMHO, MAG will do alright , this game will surpass it though.
