Speaking to VentureBeat, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick talked about his company’s anticipated revenue forecast for Bioshock 2, and the strength of brand awareness. Zelnick admits that he would have liked to have seen the original Bioshock sell more, even though the phenomenal title met universal critical appeal and managed to sell 3 million copies worldwide.
“We announced [Bioshock] sold around 3 million units. I’d like to see a title like that sell 5 million units. That would make the difference for us. If you have four or five titles that are significantly successful, that will meaningfully change our profitability.
BioShock got a lot of attention. It’s brand is huge. It won lots of awards. But it wasn’t as huge as a seller. I’m hopeful that BioShock 2 will benefit from the brand awareness, where people will play it even if they didn’t play the original.”
When Bioshock 2 releases later this year, will you buy the game due its brand appeal, or because the game looks amazing? Post your thoughts and replies in the comments section.
Totally ONLY for the brand appeal!
the visuals i didn’t find amazing, it was the story that caught me.
i enjoyed the story but don’t see how people have formed philosophical discussions on how DEEP Bioshock is. i remember reading an article on gaming saying “BioShock has been praised for providing an entirely new tool through which to explore philosophy, psychology, and morality.”
Unfortunately, these people fail to see that it’s a FICTIONAL VIDEOGAME and not a scientific study. At most, the game is just telling you that Ayn Rand was a fucking retard, which is blatantly obvious to anyone who isn’t one of her kind.Much of this mentality probably stems from the fact that Rapture was a society built from the ideals of science, art, and industry without any moral restrictions.Which in the end, blew up in there face…oh yeah, the fact you can blow up people by snapping your fingers and have vending machines full of guns on every corner didn’t help.
Rant over..
I just bought bioshock one last week, looking forward to playing it. If it’s good I’ll buy a sequel based on that. So I guess thats brand appeal.
This is my first post, i was coming to this site and read articles but i decided to register this time
I dont know whats the hype for this game lol, i guess its not my type of game but i wont buy it, theres already enough games for me to buy
The first was okay, i will obviously pick the second up for my collection. But I agree alot with shadowjin.
I’m just hoping that 2 pulls off a little more of the “horror” aspect with this one. We have no scary games anymore now that everything has gone 1st person. BioShock offered a hint of creepiness that I hope they can build on.
I want my survival horror back… end rant…
@Dave_XI
Bioshock is very easy. Easy like you could probably beat the game in a few hours with your eyes closed while playing another game on your PSP. you have no real fear of dying. any damage that you’ve inflicted to your enemies stays after you die, so you could run through the whole game with a wrench if you wanted to. Of course, if you did this, then you’d miss out on cool things, like setting a dead cat on fire than picking him up with your telekinesis and flinging him on someone, lighting them on fire (when they run to jump in a water puddle) you can use your wind power (forgot the name) and pick him up right as he jumps at the water and hold him in the air and let him burn to death or shoot him. (yes you can do that.)
you can try to beat the game on survival by not using those reviving chambers to get the brass balls trophies. just disable it in the settings and Save. Than you have to get creative on how to kill enemies and “big daddy freaks”. Those freaks are in the articles picture, the guys in diving suits that look like there trying to baptize the little girl or dead. i think shes just faking her death because shes to lazy to walk.

lol exactly, it was creepy, little girls saying “look, its an ANGEL” to dead people.. when i heard that i was laughing nonstop. Bioshock’s gameplay is like System Shock 2, an older PC FPS/RPG. My friends been playing it since he got this game. first time seeing it. Actually, a better description might be to say that if you took System Shock 2, submerged it in a bucket of water, and turned back time to the year 1960, that you would get Bioshock. In fact, Bioshock is considered a “spiritual successor” to System Shock 2, kinda like telling your English professor that your recycled paper is a “spiritual successor” to the original.

[...] Take-Two’s upcoming first-person shooter,BioShock 2, all at once received an additional new developer and a new release date. Although the sequel has been pushed back into early 2010, the creator of the franchise assures us that BioShock 2 will be worth the wait. Series creator Ken Levine had this to say: “We needed a certain kind of length for the title, because we had a scope and ambition in mind which is more ambitious than anything we’ve ever done. Even more, substantially more ambitious than BioShock.” [...]
