Recently, some patents were released for the emulation of the PlayStation 2′s CPU (central processing unit), titled the Emotion Engine. Many thought this implied that Sony would be giving back the backwards compatibility that the PS3 had lost. Now, it seems that this may be true.
The patent of the Emotion Engine was filed in December of 2008, with a publication date of last week. A German website, called Demon News, claims that they have gained word that full backwards compatibility is coming through a firmware update in the “next few weeks”. This supposedly comes from a Sony employee.
Now, don’t get too excited, as this is classified as a rumor. Would you like to see PS2 compatibility back in the PlayStation 3? Post your comments below!

I think that would be very nice!!! Its not like i play ps2 games as i did before but its cool knowing i can. I hope this is true!!
I would definitely love to see PS2 compatibility added to all PS3s. I still used my PS2 but some games can’t be played with my component cables with my HDTV so just the removing the headache of switching cords for certain games would be nice.
i did buy a ps2 to play kingdom hearts, and the final fantasys, since sony say that there would be no bc at all, but i would like to see ps2 bc in my ps3, and to buy them from the psn would be much much better
As someone that didn’t own a PS2(yep, I’m that ONE guy that didn’t have one I think), the fully backwards compatable feature of the 20gb was that make or break feature for me as to whether or not I was going to buy a PS3. Had it not been available I would not have one right now.
The PS2 game library is one of Sony’s most important components even today. When they decided to gimp the bc and then ultimately take it away I knew Sony would be regretting that decision. I even went out and bought a new 60gb just as a back up just in case. I still haven’t opened it, and won’t after seeing the supposed PS3 “Slim”(sorry but ugly is ugly). Regardless of how f’n ugly the thing is if it is able to do what my current PS3 can do that’s all that matters.
I was wondering, what happens if it is in a firmware update but I have the 60 GB with BC? I know they aren’t going to stop my hardware from working, but I wonder if they would have different updates or what? I hope they do this though!
Can’t wait for 2.90 then, I was DYING for that update! (Yes, I don’t have a PS2, so I’m happy to get the most out of my PS3!)
i dont think it will 2.90 update I’m betting on 3.0 for the backward compatibility and Playstation Cloud to come with it. Hopefully sometime in November before the end of the year. To make 3.0 a great update.
Can I just say that if this is true then it was well worth the wait for the next great firmware update after having all these small ones. I think most people, besides the ones who still have some of the earlier PS3 SKUs that came with BC, would much rather have BC than most of the other features they whine about. I know I could care less about cross-game chat and all that crap that most whine over constantly. The addition of BC through a firmware update might finally make me feel better about having to buy one of the new “cheaper” SKUs after my original 80 GB got stolen.
“My CPU is a neuronet processor, a learning computer!”
Ah, I think of that every time I see CPU.
By the way, did you expect anybody to say “I don’t want backwards compatibility.”?
now I won’t feel special having the 60gb and having the original backwards compatibility. At least I still have the media ports!
Would be nice if the next firmware had PS2 BC as I been interested in playing my PS2 games on my 40GB PS3 without cranking out the PS2 Slim. Still I’ll take this as a rumor as its rumored that firmware 3.0 will be a huge update.
I don’t even use the backward compatibility on my PS3, but if they made PS2 games downloadable, I might buy a few here n there.
Bacon4thetakin, not special? That short bus you ride to school in every day suggests other wise…lol I kid, I kid
Seriously though, I’m not a tech wiz by any mean, but I believe having the actual Emotion Chip thingy is much better than the emulation software they will be getting. Well, maybe not “much better” per se, but better none the less, and really, that’s all the matters. Right? Right? lol No more hits from the giggle stick for me tonight.:)

@ Mitch
I do feel special riding that bus. It’s the VIP bus of course…notice how few kids get to ride it!
I would love to see the comeback of PS2 BC. Although I would still love to get a GoW 1&2 in Blue Ray format…^_^
The big issue is PS2 GPU emulation, they figured out CPU emulation years ago. That was the software in the 80GB model’s software emulation.
If they figure out GPU emulation, that’d be great, but saying that full PS2 emulation is just weeks away because they got a patent for something they figured out and used years ago is kind of irresponsible.
DO IT NOW!!!! PLEASE SCEA DO THIS FINALLY!!! I WANNA PLAY GOD OF WAR 2 ON MY PS3!!!!
Ill believe it when I see it, and Ill be lovin ever minute of it. Sony will be recieving a Platinum Trophy from me.
yes i’d love to have ps2 BC. I’d love to play GOW i and II and MGS saga as well as FF between others
i dont see why you would not want to see BC in the PS3
YES – My PS3 doesn’t support the PS2 discs and being able to pick up some older titles would be great for me and my kids!
I have a a 60gb so its not all that exciting to me. Having said that, I rarely use my ps2.. this gens games are just more interesting. I do now and again. i replayed mgs1,2,3 before four, probably play gow etc.
but I’ll be the one to say, everyone makes a big deal oout of this feature, but no1 will really use it all that much.
It seems soooo important to sooo many people, it might sell a couple more systems…
probably wont though, people will probably just move on to something else to bitch about
I for the longest thought rather than a firmware type soft emu for all ps2 stuff and worrying about making it work for everything, that they would individually create ps2 emu wrappers for each title to make sure it works, then distribute via PSN
Interested in seeing where this goes….
my ps3 is already bc
to all of you lol
but im hoping this means they will offer ps2 games on psn
yep, i hope this is a hint towards downloadable PS2 games too, i just got MGS4, and i kinda feel that i should play through all of them some time, so if they surfaced i’m pretty sure i’d buy them.
Oh, and it would possibly give me the option to play those PS2 gems that i missed, like shadow of the colossus.
