Eidos President Ian Livingstone recently spoke about the immense pressure this upcoming holiday season is putting on developers and, more specifically, his own company.
“A lot of titles have already hit the shelves and there is a deluge planned for Christmas, but I think 2009 will be remembered as the year of ‘roast duck or no dinner.
There’s a glut of product and in a discerning market there is no room for mediocrity. To make a suboptimal game with a suboptimal marketing spend is a recipe for disaster.”
For Eidos, game releases for the second half of the year includes Batman: Arkham Asylum, Just Cause 2 and Mini Ninjas. With a plethora of sure-to-be blockbuster titles coming out this holiday season, especially in November, the competition is sure to be intense. We’ll just have to wait and see how Eidos’s titles fare against the likes of games such as Uncharted 2.
Do you agree with Livingstone that there’s an exuberant amount of pressure on game developers to succeed? Post your thoughts in the comment section below.

I believe as far as we are into the cycles of all consoles that devs should be sweating about making a great game. With so much out there if your game dosn’t outshine the competition than it was a waste of time for that company. He did put it well though , make a great game not a mediocre one.

Considering how long it takes to develop a game, I don’t think there’s enough time left before Christmas to turn a mediocre game into a top-notch blockbuster.

Too bad that Eidos, and other companies, don’t always have this credo. Since when is it considered common business practice to turn out mediocre product? Is that a comment that really needed to be made? I guess, in light of the recent Tomb Raider products, Mr. Livingstone is doing early damage control?

@wtGp,
But then they’d have to steal Amy Hennig away from Naughty Dog since she was in charge of that series. =/
