I'm pretty sure you CAN play with your friends thehater, and I believe they added or are adding voice chat via a patch(unless that's just White Knight Chronicles) I remember them saying that you can summon your friend but sometimes you accidentally summon them as the boss character within your world (very rare once in a bluemoon) and the winner gets rare items... so... It was an E3 interview but I haven't checked the PS blog yet for your context.
