It was known by many that “Call of Duty” name was chosen to be dropped from the sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Now, it appears that the name was been propped back up, as the boxart has been revealed.

Robert Bowling, aka fourzerotwo, has posted the official boxart of what the game that was originally referred to as simply Modern Warfare 2. Bowling posted them on his Twitter account, and stated that they were the first Modern Warfare 2 boxarts. Apparently, the lack of brand awareness may have talked Activision into changing the moniker.

Where is the Activison Logo and the ESRB raiting??

Maybe the ESRB hasn’t been released yet, but still the Box-art should have the Activison logo.

I’m calling this a major fake.

    No, it’s real :

That isn’t THE FINAL copy of it.. Like you said, they still need the “M” ESRB rating + Activision’s logo, but that will essentially, be the final cover.

  2. Hus90 Says:

dude you realize the game is months away…either way this is not bad news, people will recognize the brand name call of duty instead of just modern warfare 2

I saw this on the MW2 facebook page today and found it quite interesting.

@Hus90 no one was saying it was bad news its just that they said it was going to be called modern warefare 2 without the call of duty but the box says it just little shocking i guess to see its still called call of duty

I don’t see why they even ever considered dropping the Call of Duty name anyway. It has such a great reputation and massive following why would you remove it from a title?? It makes absolutely NO marketing sense. I think it would have been looked over by people buying new consoles if “Call of Duty” would have been removed, but I think everyone inside and outside of the gaming world has at least heard of the Call of Duty games so they would definitely look for one when they bought a new system.

  6. DRCD1 Says:

It wouldn’t make any sense the name being Modern Warfare 2 since there was no Modern Warfare 1. There was, though, CoD4: MW. So the sequel should be CoD4: Modern Warfare 2. Because since CoD is the main title, then what CoD 4 added new to the title was 4: Modern Warfare… is anyone still reading this…?… LoL

I hope they change the way the call of duty looks. IMO it kills the flow of the picture. Looks awkward compared to the modern warfare 2 style.

  8. Jeneric Says:

this is weak sauce. how boring and already played out all over gameinformer. i guess all they are worried about is making sure they use as much of their name as possible… if the first had just been modern warfare it wouldve sold just as much because of the reviews and the word of mouth just like this would if they left it mw2

  9. KwietStorm Says:

Really tired of hearing about the whole name thing with this game. Really tired of Call of Duty in general.

  10. infamouslyfamous Says:

    That doesn’t look real…

  11. C_Y_P_H_E_R Says:

    Its fake.show us a ps3 version!

  12. Dan Massi Says:

    It’s not fake..

Robert Bowling, a member of Infinity Ward, has showed these off. These are obviously not the final version, as there is no developer logo, or ESRB label. This is the real thing.
