Sony Joins Growing List of World-Class CE Manufacturers That Enable Netflix Members to Instantly Watch Movies Streamed to the TV via the Internet

Netflix, Inc., (Nasdaq: NFLX) the world’s largest online movie rental service, today announced a partnership with Sony Electronics that will enable Netflix subscribers to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix on Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs and on previous BRAVIA models compatible with Sony’s BRAVIA Internet video link module.

In the fall, Netflix members on an unlimited plan can use the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video-capable HDTVs to instantly watch more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix.

Sony is the latest consumer electronics (CE) company to partner with Netflix. Other CE companies partnering with Netflix are Microsoft (with the Xbox360), LG Electronics, Roku, Samsung, TiVo and VIZIO.

Netflix members pay as little as $8.99 a month for unlimited streaming from a library of more than 12,000 choices and unlimited DVDs by mail from a library of more than 100,000 DVD titles in more than 200 genres.

“Sony has been a world leader in consumer electronics for decades,” said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings. “We are proud to include Sony Electronics among our CE partners who continue to provide new and exciting ways for Netflix members to instantly watch movies and TV episodes in their living rooms on their TVs.”

  1. I hope this will shut some people up, but if I am not correct, couldn’t you just use the PS3′s browser to stream the movies if you didn’t have a Bravia?

    You could , but then sony wouldnt sell any tv’s. Cause honestly if u think about it, the same people with this tv, probablt have an xbox 360 also and still they will be paying for a feature on a tv they dont need.

    there Bravia TV’s have there own navigation similar the PS3 XMB.. it actually is the XMB.

    The less items involved to get from point A-B the better.. its simple doing it from the TV, its like changing a setting (XMB style).

    Sony needs to get PlayTv out for the PS3 in the NA region so that this can be a better offer. Unless the Bravia has a builtin hard drive or builtin SSD memory drive then where are they going to place the cache data from the streaming source. You have to have something to store a small amount of data so that the streaming information is constant and in the proper order. I know that there is an internet interface and connection for the Bravia Tv’s , I own one and looked into it before buying my PS3, it costs nearly $200. Nearly half the price and less functionality than a PS3 and harder to find since most retail stores do not stock the item, it is a special order, making it more expensive.

    If the newer Bravia Tv’s had this internally then that would make sense but then they could then build in the PS3 system board and take up less space.

    This is good news but what does it have to do with the PlayStation Life Style?

    I did not know that it had something like that till now(XMB-like thing), so I think the main point of the Bravia being able to stream is to show it’s far more simplistic and easier to use than any other console I assume.

    Either way, if you have a PS3 and not a Bravia and can stream Netflix off your PS3(not sure if you can) you should still be happy.

    Bravia Internet Video Link handles everything including news feeds and pages. Some of the Bravia TV’s have internal memory my dad just purchased the 52″ XBR9 Series and it allows video streaming from your computer or labtop to the TV directly. Its flawless.

    its the XMB just colored differently and allows you to change the icon colors. which is pretty cool. Last year Sony stated that they want to link everyone of there products to each other. Some Ericsson’s cells (new ones) have an XMB. I think you can stream to your PS3 look at VIDZONE? its fast with little to no delay, on startup you can fast forward without waiting for it to load. Probably 3-5 second wait.

    You cant stream Netflix 2 PS3 w/o PlayOn streaming from a pc 2 ur PS3. This article isnt about PS3 anyways, its about Bravia TVs.

  8. shadowjin says:

    @Natiej85

    which also has nothing to do with the PS3 other than the Sony name brand.

  9. Shoot, I got a Bravia; two of them and they’re both XBR’s but not internet capable.

    Hopefully they add it to the PS3. :P

  10. shadowjin says:

    @Kishen Patel

    than you have an old model Bravia

  11. DGR8Mc187 says:

    Better than not having a Bravia at all , amirite?
