The economic depression has had a strong influence on Sony’s profit margins, especially due to shifts in currency value. SCEA head boss Jack Tretton recently expressed his concern over fiscal year 2008′s woeful numbers for the overall game industry, yet shed some optimism over this upcoming fiscal year’s numbers.

“Hopefully last year is as bad as it gets,” speaking to Fast Company. “I think all indicators are that 2009 is going better than 2008. In 2008, we had a 38 percent increase in sales and we hit our ten million units worldwide goal for PS3 sales… At the worst possible time, if you’re hitting numbers and delivering success… my hope is that as our production efficiencies improve and more great games come to market, the horizon has got to be better for 2009 and 2010.

It’s like being out there in a storm – it does cause you to question your conviction, and tie yourself to the mast and weather the storm. We have hit a very challenging period of trying to sell future technology, a high-end device, but is on the high-end retail pricing spectrum, at a time when people’s disposable income is limited. But I think the fact we were successful in that says people are getting the message, that you get tremendous value when you buy a PlayStation product.”

During last fiscal year, Sony managed to sell 10 million units. This year, Sony is forecasting 13 million units will be sold, representing a 30% hike over last year.

  1. I helped them out, I bought PS3 #2 a few weeks ago. Now I have a new 80GB to go with my 60GB launch model.

    Peace,

why do you need 2 PS3′s??? I hope you have someone else living with you so you can play LAN games otherwise that is a tremendous waste of money especially since you had a launch model which is far superior to the new models. If you did it for the bigger hard drive, you do know you can upgrade the hard drive don’t you?? And it’s really easy.

Anyway, back to the topic on hand…I think Playstation’s future is very bright. I think developers are starting to find the limitations in the 360 now and are seeing the vast potential the PS3 has left for this generation. We already know that no 360 exclusive can touch a PS3 exclusive so now we just have to get developers to spend enough time on multi-platform titles and we will see superior PS3 titles there as well.

it is a waste of money… if you live with anyone both can share. Im sure hes has a good reason whatever that reason is.

Sony can only go up not down because now they have games to back up there systems 3rd party and exclusives.

@ shadowjin – the only reason I was thinking it wouldn’t be a waste of money is if you wanted to play a game that doesn’t support split-screen with someone in the same household (a son or wife or something, because you would definitely make a friend buy their own)

ps3 will be just fine, I’d worry about the pspgo instead.

It’s nice to see they are confident in their business.

  8. I also have two ps3s.A 60gb and a 40gb silver import. One for my living room for family and for watching movies.I’m upset though because it will only play copied dvds,no originals that are region coded.Plus i figured my 60gb would overheat someday since i’m always online.

What does it matter how many PS3s they have or why? Its never a waste of money 2 buy a PS3, they could gut it and us it as a flower pot or in some art project. As long as its not still on the shelves Im happy.
