According to photographs taken from what appears to be an internal website for either Eidos or Crystal Dynamics, a new Tomb Raider may be in the works.

Details are sketchy, but it seems like an open, free-moving world is the central focus in the game. This would be a first in the Tomb Raider series. Also, a completely new combat system is being implemented. Furthermore, the story seems to be a prologue to the series overarching plot, and it, “[explores] the origins of Laura Croft’s transformation into a hardened adventurer.”

At the time of this writing, Crystal Dynamic’s lawyers ordered the website that this rumor and photographs originated, Fourplayercoop, to take down the photographs that appeared to come from an internal website. However, Kotaku luckily managed to type up a portion of the photographs, before they were taken down.

When a sudden storm destroys her research vessel, a young and inexperienced Lara Croft finds herself stranded on a mysterious and remote island hidden off the shores of Japan. Despite several signs of various inhabitants the island is oddly deserted, and an uneasy feeling settles in as strange sounds emerge from the shadows. With only her determination, inner strength, and resourcefulness to help her, Lara must overcome the challenges of a harsh and unforgiving journey that will take her across a vast island wilderness and deep into the claustrophobic and menacing underground tombs from the island’s past. As she struggles to prevail through brutal combat encounters and treacherous exploration, Lara will be pushed to her limits and forced to adapt to her situation in order to survive and escape from the lethal predators that stalk her every move.

• Origin story. “This new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring the origins of Lara Croft’s transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island’s mysterious past.”

Until we get a confirmation from either Eidos or Crystal Dynamic’s, we’ll classify this as a rumor. However, the speed at which the Crystal Dynamic’s lawyers came in suggests there is some validity to this. Stick with PlayStation LifeStyle as we’ll keep you up-to-date on this developing situation.

I always thought it would be cool if Lara made a cameo in Uncharted.

Hard to get excited about anything to do with Tomb Raider due to the fact that the developers refuse to ever fix the frustrating gameplay problems.
