Gran Turismo 5 creator Kazunori Yamauchi stated last month that Polyphony Digital could potentially release the game at “any time”. This came as a surprise to many considering the game wasn’t present in playable form at E3, but rather in a gameplay trailer. However, if Amazon is correct then Yamauchi definitely wasn’t kidding.
According to Amazon’s official listing for North America, Sony will release Gran Turismo 5 on December 29th, 2009. The fact that this date falls on a Tuesday only adds more credence since game publishers typically release their titles to retailers on Tuesdays. Oh, and you may remember this little tidbit spilled by SCEE chief executive James Armstrong last December.
Even though this isn’t an official release date from Sony, most games on Amazon get just a “available for pre-order” tag and/or an estimated fiscal year release date if the actual date hasn’t been officially set. For example, God of War III is tied to April 1st, 2010, the beginning of the 2010 Fiscal Year. And Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII have similar release estimates, for December 31st, 2010.
Unfortunately, for now, we’ll have to peg this as a rumor until we get official confirmation from Sony. However, we have contacted Sony for official word on Gran Turismo 5’s release date, and will update when we get a response.

Wow! It does seem possible, seeing how the 29th is on a Tuesday and Gran Turismo 5 has been in development A LONG time.

did they add the car damage yet?
07/29/2009 at 4:44 PM
watch the E3 trailer, that’s all we know (blue subaru with front-end damage)
July 29th, 2009 at 2:45 PM
I have my doubts. Why would they release it the week AFTER christmas?
07/29/2009 at 4:44 PM
For all the kids that got a shiny new PS3 for Christmas? I have my doubts too though.

Yeah, Sony and Polyphony BOTH know people will buy Gran Turismo. They don’t have to explain themselves. People love this series.
If this is the release date, it is great. It avoids the rush of the November month and it is a great way to bring in the new year. And January – March is dead for video game releases, so it’ll go strong in those month’s as well.
Not to mention kids these days get a lot of Christmas money. Release the game right after X-mas, and you’ll guarantee yourself a lot of kid sales.

That would be ridiculous. If GT5 is out this year then the PS3 will be leaps ahead of what PS2 did in the same about of time. What a terrific console.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:03 PM
yes steel they have added car damage
July 29th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
i thought they would because grand theft auto 4 was released in december
July 29th, 2009 at 4:00 PM
this would be unfrickin believable
July 29th, 2009 at 4:23 PM
Isn’t this still just a rumour tho?
July 29th, 2009 at 4:38 PM
Nah, I don’t think GT5 will come out this year, even though Kazunori has already said the game can come out at almost any time now.
If GT5 does come out in 2009, I think it’ll be in Japan ONLY with Western releases in Early/Spring 2010, similar to how GT5P launched, releasing in Japan late 2007 with Western releases in the Spring of 2008.
My only worry is that Sony could push back GT5 a little bit further in 2010 (Summer) since so many games that were supposed to come out Fall this year got pushed to Early part of 2010 and at the moment, the first couple of months in 2010 is crowded with pretty big game releases: Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, Bayonetta, Dante’s Inferno, Splinter Cell Conviction etc….
It would be awesome if God of War 3 came out during the early part of March and GT5 releasing near the end of March, and GT5 would be a VERY great way for Sony to close out their fiscal year. At GamesCon or at Tokyo Game Show, Sony REALLY needs to put a date on GT5 and I’m hoping it’s Early 2010… I would say Holiday 2009, but I just don’t think it’s gonna happen then.

As much as I like Playstation Lifestyle i think I’m gonna wait until Sony officially announce a release date before I start getting excited about dates.

idk about this. It seems like such an odd release date to me. IMO it won’t be out until 2010
July 29th, 2009 at 5:38 PM
I would wet my pants.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:00 PM
Wetting you pants is a waste of time and requires that you wash them afterwards… GT5 will release when PD wants to release it and when that is? When it’s perfect for everyone, the car damage displayed at E-3 was minimal at best and it failed to show how that damage occured. If you watch WRC TV and see how those cars act you would know that hood/bumper damage can occur from taking a jump a little to fast, it does not indicate if the damage affected the cars driveability and if it does not affect driveability then the damage model shown is a complete failure. PD says it is a “Real Driving Simulator” but with out realworld damage it is only an ARCADE SIMULATOR.
Plus the damage needs to also cross over to the online version also since the current penalty system is a sham…
07/30/2009 at 9:48 AM
An arcade simulator would be an console emulator…

Hoping this is true, cause I’d really love some Gran Turismo 5 around Christmas.

I agree with Kyle. This is a good move. Kiddies will get a new PS3 and tons of cash and a week later will see the shiny new GT5 box.
July 31st, 2009 at 5:18 AM
Gamestop had it listed for December ‘09 as well for a while, but they’ve since moved it to February 2010. But it might as well just be listed as TBD until Sony comes out and announces when their exclusives are coming.
Based on what was pushed back from 2009 to 2010 so far, we are expecting White Knight Chronicles, Heavy Rain, MAG, The Last Guardian, God of War 3, and Gran Turismo 5 all in the first 5 months of 2010, which seems like QUITE a lot. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see a number of titles get delayed even further.
However, pushing one of these titles UP to December 2009 makes sense as well. December is going to be a pretty dead month for new games (all the big titles will be available before Black Friday).
