With the recent news on both the 80GB PS3 being discontinued in Japan, and the listing of the PS3 Slim on Amazon Germany, much more weight has been given to the rumors of the PS3 Slim. To further add merit to these rumors, something mysterious is happening within Sony, involving PS3 production numbers.
According to Taiwan’s DigiTimes, Sony has recently “placed significant orders for key Sony PS3 components”, with higher numbers then what they normally order. DigiTimes says that the components are enough to manufacture up to a million PlayStation 3’s by the third quarter of 2009. This number, is more than double of what was produced last year.
The sources for DigiTimes also say that the shipments of time division synchronizers, which are used by Sony for the PS3, are reaching higher shipment orders then usual.
What does this mean? Well, either Sony is preparing just in case if the PS3 goes suddenly in demand, or that they are prepping a new PS3 console … perhaps the PS3 Slim?

It could also mean a price drop is coming, but the Slim is more likely.

@FiftyQuid

in a dream world sony will drop the price and announce a slim
August 4th, 2009 at 1:14 PM
They could be ramping up for a price drop into the Holiday buying season. If they drop the price to $299 that would spur demand. It has been said that a Slim at this point in time would be a little premature when you consider the lifecycle of the PS2 and when they introduced the Slim… And look at the features that were included with the Slim, they added an Ethernet port to the console with out having to add the HDD option…
So in my OPINION it would be to ramp up production of 160gb and introduce maybe a 320 or 250gb model…

Hopefully its the Slim but until its official ill keep my emotions in low gear.

i hope its a slim cuz im buyin

Sony claimed that the production price for the PS3 has gone down 70% (around $240+). It would be a good strike on other competitors if they’ll bring the price down to $250 (Now, that’s cheap!). If that happens, I’ll most likely get another one for the living room.

“time division synchronizers”
Hah! Brilliant!

@Voyou San
Well it is not a dream since I believe it to be a soon to come reality
@SPD55
IDK about releasing another PS3 SKU with more HDD space. I feel that they are taking out the 80GB to introduce the Slim with 80GB HDD space. I don’t think they will release another PS3 with just more HDD space. It would be a bad idea IMO.
I want to say the PS3 Slim if it is “real” will come out in the $250-299 price range while the 160GB will come down to the $350-399 range just a $100 increase of the Slim. This way Sony would be guaranteed profit seeing that the original PS3 should cost around $270 to make while the Slim probably cost a lot less make since it is smaller

I all down for any price cut, new model or slim or all 3, GO SONY GO!

“time division synchronizers”
Due to the Heisenberg Principle your PS3 will be both slim and non-slim at the same time, until you open the box. Quantum marketing FTW!
