Final Fantasy XIV, the recently-announced-never-thought-to-be-announced title, has finally come out with some surprising new details. The title was announced at E3 2009, and will be the second Final Fantasy MMO developed by Square Enix.

In the latest edition of Famitsu Wave, the magazine details greatly on the MMO Final Fantasy XIV. The latest issue comes with an 8-minute DVD, which showcases the first details on the PS3 exclusive.

The major details are as follows. The game seems to have no leveling system, and instead uses a reinvented character progression system. The job system from Final Fantasy XI is said to be making an appearance, but will be heavily altered. In the interview with Nobuaki Komoto, he revealed that the weapons players assign to each character will alter “the way you play” and “the way you grow.”

FFXIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka also stated that Final Fantasy XIV takes place in a new region, with a “modern” feel to it. The new world is said to have familiar races, and will also have a “deep story” told through cut scenes and in-game quests.

Final Fantasy XIV is currently slated for a 2010 release date, the same release year as Final Fantasy XIII.

Update: The video has been removed from Youtube.

  1. I really like this concept. In real life you don’t gain levels you just get better and learn new things.

I think this will really open up a whole new venue of PvP. Think about it, no longer “Level restricted” areas just more of having to get more powerful and better at the game in order to advance in the world.

I’m thinking maybe someone who is just really good and specialized can essentially beat a less skilled player who would otherwise be like 10-20 levels higher due to how much fighting he has done, but because of the lack of leveling system, things are more balanced in many ways…

I don’t know exactly how the system works, I’m just forming conjecture, but it really REALLY kinda excites me. I got tired in WoW trying to create a lvl 55 so I could create new level 55 death knights on WoW so that I could play with other people on their servers… I’m hoping this way, weapons and armor are more prevailent and you can jump start someone much quicker.

I’m curious if htey’re going with mastery routes to where you get more effects out of using a weapon longer.

Jeez this game has so much potential I really hope they find a way to make it and keep it enjoyable as a timeless classic MMO.

    MMO 2.0 Here we come!

  2. i dont trust it, this sounds like too much change for SE, i dont think they can handle it, i mean we know they don’t really like innovation

  3. It sounds interesting, it would be nice to see such a different direction for a PvP leveling or no leveling system in this case.

They know how everybody and their loved Final Fantasy 2j’s leveling system and now they’re making an mmo with it.

Seriously, I hope they get it right this time. Final Fantasy XI’s job/subjob system was so close to perfection, it should have been the last thing they changed.

Well I’m not a big fan of MMo’s but if the game is fun then you’ll see me eatin crow.

  10. The video was no longer able to be viewed when I saw this article… Remember I was the first comment. T_T

  11. Nootfloosh says:

It’s not PS3-exclusive. It was announced for PC the day after Sony announced it, and SE is saying they may look into a port for 360.

I predict it releases in November/December of next year, which would give it some space from FFXIII which should be out in June. Versus XIII will most likely be 2011….
