PSN Review – Fat Princess

The single-player campaign of Fat Princess is roughly two hours in length, and there is a gladiator mode, which is great for training but incredibly tough. The bulk of your time though will be spent playing online. The game features four game modes, all of which are a blast. But the capture-the-flag style game modes are definitely the most enjoyable. As you play online you earn points that not only help you climb the ranks, but also unlock features for your characters. Each character is customizable, and you have the choice to alter not only their physical appearance, but also the gender of the voice-over actor.

It’s unfortunate that the ranking system is flawed, and high ranks are rewarded to those who obtain high scores in long drawn-out games. Also, the lack of a clan system discourages teamwork, which is essential in Fat Princess. With that said, the game is a lot of fun to play, and the easy to jump into gameplay makes up for these slight shortcomings. Also, Titan Studios has stated that they will be rectifying the ranking system’s issues with an upcoming patch.

Fat Princess is only $15, and is easily one of the best downloadable games to date, if not the best. Not only does the game have a lot to enjoy, but the game is highly entertaining. It really is an outstanding game and is a great addition to the PlayStation Network. It’s both a blast to play and the enjoyable classes create for a diverse teamwork-based environment that can be enjoyed by anyone that picks up this title.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Final Score

Highly enjoyable class-based action with RTS elements.

Beautiful presentation and personality.

Lock on feature could have been better, but the gameplay is still an absolute blast.

9 out of 10

“easily one of the best downloadable games to date, if not the best”. Coming from the same PSN as Warhawk, Tekken and Flower, it’s obviously NOT the best, but it is a fun game, for now.

Sadly it lacks both the depth and the teamwork of Warhawk and though cute, the gameplay seems rather limited. Am I going to spend 800 hours in Fat Princess? Don’t think so.

  4. I’d say it has plenty of depth. Maybe a lack of teamwork, but thats only because its a casual fun game and there aren’t many players who want to actually coordinate the team side of it.

The depth easily comes from the multiple setups of classes you can use in an assault, ensuring you have people healing properly, using support ranged characters and moving together at the same time. All that while ensuring several people on your team are obtaining resources and upgrading the correct units in the right order. I mean its not Warhawk but its also not Galaga. There’s plenty in this game to enjoy and do.

I’m sure i’d love the game but im on the fence at the moment, in the UK its 12 POUNDS! This is a total rip-off and can spend it much more wisely and products that have much more replayability with LBP at 12 pounds.

If it would be lowered to a better conversion rate to at least 10 preferably 8 pounds this would be priced just right, but at the moment it just cant do as i don’t have that much money to spare.

  6. Wish you could change the game mode or vote to change it (not just the map online).
Also wish you could host a dedicated server.

However, this game is well-worth the price tag and I’ll be playing it for weeks, if not months. 5/5 and should probably be an editor’s choice award-winner!

Is anybody else unable to play online even after the patch? My PS3 is in DMZ, I have a NAT 2 connection and I factory-resetted my router but it still won’t let me play online.

  8. false, soccer is the best online mode, after that is snatch and grab.

Id have to agree with nemo20000 its a great game but Sadly it lacks both the depth and the teamwork of Warhawk and though it has its moments, the game play is limited. I dont see myself playing Fat Princess for 800 hours and everyone as well (based on the very little time they play) it shows it. Im still interested in the DLC and some new maps Id also like to see voting on the mode of play.

    @ Joshstork

its a great game, just don’t expect it to blow you away.

    I Love it

Sorry, but Warhawk can’t be classified in the same way that the other downloadables are. Warhawk was a full-priced retail game at launch. The only games I feel compare to the overall value of Fat Princess are Braid, Castle Crashers and Flower. Braid is great but I find it far less enjoyable than Fat Princess. I haven’t had a chance to play Castle Crashers so perhaps that’s the only comparable game. Flower was far too short, and was limited to single-player. I loved Flower but Fat Princess is just a better buy.

I started to have my doubts about this game after many failed attempts to play online. The patch they released this past weekend quickly changed all my doubts. I went from not being able to join a single online game to being able to join every single one. Great game. Well worth the $15 I spent on it and definitely deserving of the 5/5 score.

  13. Great review, Jonathan!

Fat Princess is a great game, however, I wish people would communicate more. I played in a silent room for about an hour last night…and we lost. I’m still trying to get familiar with all the classes and their abilities. Even when I don’t exactly know what I’m doing, it’s still a fun experience.

    Great review!

Great game, another satisfying PSN purchase!

  16. I’m just going to say, if you find a lack of teamwork existing within the game, you’re not playing with the right people. PERIOD!

When you coordinate priests, mages, workers, etc… you dominate online just like in Warhawk. There are choke hold points, and everything. This game is wonderfully deep when you understand and work the strategy of it. I’ve taken out 5 enemies at once as an Ice mage by freezing htem, running into the outpost, freezing, outpost, freezing, etc… keeping my health replenished. I’ve also killed a ton of people that couldn’t reach me by throwing bombs off of the Outpost as a Worker class. Without a good strategy the game takes 30 minutes plus per match. With good strategy the games take 5-10 minutes on average.

There’s PLENTY of strategy to compete with games like Warhawk, but it’s a 15 dollar title compared to a 40 dollar (on release) title so you can’t pretend like they have to be equal in every strategic respect.

They’re 2 completely different games and well.. Warhawk is a retail PSN title so it doesn’t specifically count as a PSN title since that was an after thought to boost sales.
