Members of the hardcore gaming community are used to making educated guesses as to what Sony has in store for us, whether it’s new games, new hardware, or even new firmware updates. And it looks like we may be getting a new firmware update for the PSP sooner than expected.
A recent copy of Shin Megami Tensei: Persona came with a mandatory update to PSP Firmware 5.55. With Shin Megami Tensei: Persona due out on September 22nd, it’s easy to put two and two together. For further evidence, this picture was taken from a demo unit of another Japanese PSP title, SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny.

There were no obvious changes reported in this update, so unfortunately we don’t know if it relates to a significant upgrade or not. The last update for the PSP (5.51) was released on June 10, 2009, which only helped system stability during the use of certain features.

Decent speculation. Some games, like Ratchet & Clank: Future, include their own version of intermediate firmware that is never released to the mass market. They include a few tools from the new SDK and put them on the disc. That’s probably what’s going on here.

To his defense. The PS3 R&C titles did come with 1.94, which was specific to that title and not released on PSN.

Oh umm… I think 5.51 was actually an anti-hack firmware for the PSP 3000. Could be wrong. I think that’s why they released it if I’m not mistaking.
