Remember when we first told you about the prospect of Netflix streaming on your PS3, and even backed up our claim with a Netflix job opening? Yeah, well, you can forget about all that.
This past year has been filled with speculation surrounding the possibility of Netflix bringing their much acclaimed service to the PlayStation3. However, this morning, Microsoft decided to bring the hammer down, giving PS3 owners a much needed reality check via the latest Xbox Live update. In an excerpt from a support page detailing the update, Xbox 360 fanboys where greeted with new material that will undoubtedly be added to their flame war arsenal.
“Netflix Partnership
This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360. Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers**, at no additional cost.“
We can’t help but wonder if the decision to leave the PS3 out in the cold and instead bring Netflix support to BRAVIA owners was a conscious effort on Sony’s part. When you consider the success of the PSN Video Store, it’s hard to imagine that adding Netflix streaming into the mix would be in Sony’s best interests.
Netflix has yet to make an official statement on the matter, but hey, we still have PlayOn, right?

Well, someone knew that if it came to PS3 , it would do better.
^^^^ How so? That is quite possibly the most “fanboyish” comment I’ve ever seen.
Personally, I could give two craps about Netflix as I prefer getting my movies the old fashioned way by walking two blocks to my nearest Blockbuster.
just bought my roku, but would be nice if sony would offer a subscription service for video rentals, say 12 bucks a month for unlimited rentals
@Nosferatu King
Sorry if I sounded like a ” fanboy ” which I’m not. I was talking serious looking at the huge success of the PSN video store and how many movie enthusiasts are on the PS3, I would see huge success for netflix too.
Netflix. Never used it, probably never will.
Well, there’s always Blockbuster
no netflix
Don’t believe the spin! Look at the last sentence, but ignore the part separated by commas: Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience at no additional cost.
So maybe we will just have to pay a little bit for it? And we all know “exclusive partnership” could mean anything… like exclusive right at this very second, but not tomorrow.
This isn’t just blind fanboy hope. It doesn’t matter to me whether PS3 gets Netflix as I have PlayOn and a 360. I just think that comment screams SPIN!
this is fine with me since the XBox Live members are paying for it anyway. I never use the Netflix “Instant” features because they only have a limited selection available, I would much rather just wait for the movies to come in the mail. The wait is actually only about 2 days and I have it figured out to make sure I always get the newest releases every week.
thats fine by me.. im sure there are other ways to stream video or will be
I don’t see the point of the Netflix support. Going to Blockbuster and renting Blu-ray is so much better in every department.
Sucks for our US gaming brothers, as Netflix is a great convenience service; however, it’s not the crux of an online community.
We don’t have Netflix in Canada, so this stuff doesn’t affect us at all (we get FAR LESS than the US PSN).
Anyway, if given the chance, I’d pass on Netflix for all the awesome game content coming up over the next year.
Oh, well. :/
Good point about the games coming out.
It’s good that the 360 has Netflix. Otherwise, people wouldn’t have much reason to turn on their systems this year.
^^^^ Sure there are. Halo: ODST, Ghostbusters, Shadow Complex, Xplosion Man…
And I guess that’s about it.
Hehe, I’m just kidding around. This is just a slow year for the 360, I’m sure it will have a return to form next year. After all that PS3 has no games stuff, I figure they can take some ribbing.
Streaming Netflix is a great feature, it works really well, I just wish we could get it too.
The way I look at it we have Blue ray better than 1080P so im happy
“available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers**, at no additional cost.“
wow, so you pay for Gold membership, then you pay for unlimited Netflix and they wont charge you more… how sweet of them.
screw’em, I stream content from my PC and I’ll bet both Netflix and Microsoft that I have a bigger and better selection than both those jack-offs can provide.
It makes sense – Sony’s got their own movie rental service, so they wouldn’t want to offer a competing service on their own network.
Ding, ding, ding, I think Jack has it .
PlayON works rather well if that’s the only thing your wireless router is doing well atleast mine. I have yet to see if it works as well on the Wii via the Internet Browers because my PSP browers really left me dissappointed. It works but I guess I was just hoping for streaming and now downloading content and then watching. As far as the Wii goes, I just play 40 bucks for the program so why do I have to pay an extra amount just to gain access to a browser the should have included. So know we all know our way around Netflix’s diss or Sony’s business decision, all I want to know about is Vidzone and PlayTV. And how we as americans can some how get around whatever is holding us back from the good stuff. Like an antenna for my PSP that pics up the new Digital Signal that all the converter boxs are playing these days. Or do the same thing with the PlayTV, I know we’ll be geting shorted but ateast it will be a way to temporary record HD episodes of a local HD broadcast. And also not taking away that much from PSN great library of potential sales.
I use blockbuster
If i had a pocket full of Phucks i wouldnt spare one . the movies i like i got to bestbuy or amazon and purchase them on blu-ray and wouldnt dwn grade to downlaodable movies of lower quality to blu-ray so yea
Im not really hurt by this cause I prefer mine to be owned.
