PS3 Slim Seemingly Confirmed in Best Buy Ad; $299.99 Price Point [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] There is some concern that this may be a photoshop using a mock up image from NeoGAF.  Stay tuned and we will keep you updated if any new information surfaces.  For now, we are still stuck waiting for Sony to officially confirmed it next week during GameCom.

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for.  The PS3 Slim seems to have become official.  We’ve been talking about this since before E3, and it may have finally come to light.

According to an upcoming Best Buy ad flyer, the “PS3 Slim is in”.  Not only is the slimmed down console going to be available sooner rather than later.  But it’s going to have a drastically lower price point of $299.99.

Sony is sure to move a major amount of PS3’s at that price point.  Official confirmation from Sony is expected at GameCom in Cologne Germany.

  1. Voyou San Says:

does that say 4 USB inputs on the 2nd picture?

  2. Jonathan Leack Says:

I’m going to have to pickup another PlayStation 3 now. That thing is a BEAST.

  3. Kyle P. Says:

Nice! This is the perfect pricepoint!

    Hell yeah!

  4. FiftyQuid Says:

Is that Uncharted, AC, LBP, MGS4, Lair, and Bio, advertised for $9.99?!

I can’t read the small print. Looks like 160GB HDD, full backwards compatibility, built in memory card reader, 4 USB, 1 HDMI port, all-in one something, Blu-Ray player, Includes 1 controller.

There is no way Sony brought back backwards compatibility back for $299.99.

    Limited quantities?

  5. shadowjin Says:

    300$ ill buy another.

  6. wtGp Says:

u see people care about the specs and the tech behind this slim rather than the look of it

  7. shadowjin Says:

i worked in bestbuy threw college . based on the flyer in the source. thats how they organise the adds in a managers folder before its released to the public. in other words… its LEGIT

  8. Paulmichael Contreras Says:

Wow, 09/06 is soon! Two days before I leave for Amsterdam. :D

  9. diogo_sesimbra Says:

Man i am going to sell my PS3

  10. LockyGeisha Says:

    @FiftyQuid:

i think it says all-in-one memory card reader

wow, i will buy it, just put it in an online shop and thats it :D

that way, my brother and i will play in warhak, battlefield 1943, fat princess, burnout, wow, all those goooood games ;)

  11. VanilaGorila-x- Says:

160GB HDD and Full backwards compatibilty!! Damn, that’s a steal for $299.

    Peace,
    VG

  12. Natiej85 Says:

Damn, sometimes I tell ya. . . If I could have held out a few more years. Cause man do I feel jipped now. But I’m not mad, cause of all those kickass nights I’ve had up to this point. I’m gonna have to get another one if I want to expand my gaming library anymore as far as PSN games is concerned. I wanna keep my main system with atleast 50 gigs for future big games with 6 gig of HD required. Plus I might wanna start this next one out with a partioned HD for a potential OS. Always wanted to do that but I didn’t want to was the space, I wonder if PSN will let me get a order for redownload of video content for a second system. Has anyone tired that? If so what was the outcome?

  13. Voyou San Says:

wow everything everyone wanted, smaller case and its 100 bucks cheaper?? HOW SONY??

  14. Jaxx377 Says:

looks like it may be time to retire my launch 60Gb, Will this definitely have backwards compatibility or do we have to wait till tuesday for confirmation on that

  15. koolguy16 Says:

    win

  16. dbigfeet Says:

    mmmmm. photoshop?
MSG4 and LBP for 9.99. yeah i am thinking evil joke

  17. Jeneric Says:

hmmmmm whats up with the box we saw saying the hdd was 120gb but this add says 160gb? although i believe this is coming im still not convinced of the details… 4 usb ports, full bc, and 160gb hdd is just toooo perfect

  18. giese095 Says:

something is fishy about this…it has all the specs of the original 80GB or 60GB SKU only with a 160GB HDD. I think someone pasted in the picture of the slim in an ad for one of the old 60GB and painted a 1 in front of the 60. I don’t see how they would be able to add all of that, including the media card reader into a slim unit and be able to lower the price besides. I think the white border around the Slim gives it away that it was pasted in. Maybe I’m wrong but I just think it’s sounds too good to be true, not to mention I don’t want it to be true since it would be better than the PS3 I spent $400 on and no “smart” individual would buy mine used from me for a decent price when they can get a slim for $299.

  19. TwinDad Says:

That would be the perfect model for the PS3. Too perfect. Like Jeneric said, the other leaks pinned it at 120GB drive. Also what is the date of this Sunday ad? They usually only get a few weeks out, I think we are too far ahead for a September ad.

  20. giese095 Says:

I also just noticed that at the bottom with the $9.99 titles (something else that seems too good to be true) that Assassin’s Creed and MGS4 don’t have the red Greatest Hits markings on them which also points too this being fake for me.

I don’t doubt that the SLIM is coming, and probably sooner rather than later, I just doubt the specs that this ad boosts. Actually, I work in retail, and if BestBuy is anything like some other places their ads will list products that are coming out but until they have confirmed specs from Sony they will just list the specs from a similar, or older version, of a product until they have the real info for their final version of the ad.

  21. SPD55 Says:

I am skeptical when the text is barely readable… But I will also say that if it is true then all those whiners about BC will have nothing to flail about then, because if it is correct that BC will be available in the slim then it will also be available to the rest of the new line up since it will have been done in FW.

But 4 USB slots, memory card reader?, I thought those were what created the higher costs for the 60gb launch, but if they can bring them back then I must consider this a future purchase with repair costs of $150 out of warranty and a $299 price for new I could always use my 80gb MS bundled console for parts when the other needs new player or some other parts that are related.

  22. megs1120 Says:

The shell that was revealed earlier only had two USB ports. Either this is fake, or the picture of the shell is.

  23. shadowjin Says:

not every store advertises a greatest hits picture in there add..backwards compatibility might be possible based on the patent Sony made for the CELL to replicate and Ive seen universals memory card readers in computers. The picture of the slim still is still fishy.. bestbuy store managers get the adds sometimes in 1 – 2 weeks before there sent to homes.

  24. megs1120 Says:

There’s a lot of suspicious stuff in that picture, besides the NeoGAF mockup.

  25. skullking123 Says:

Fake that doesn’t even looks real

  26. DGR8Mc187 Says:

Sounds too good to be true.

But if it is can you say bye bye 360.

  27. Steven Garcia Says:

I’m going to have to call photoshop on this one, considering Bestbuy would NEVER sells those titles for $10. Bestbuy already makes next to nothing on video game sales and absolutely nothing on system sales. As far as I can tell, that entire ad space offers no financial advantage to Bestbuy, other than the idea that HOPEFULLY, people will pick up a ridiculously over priced HDMI cable. with their system.

  28. CombatCow Says:

    Hope it’s not a fake.

Check the weekly ad (top left) on http://www.bestbuy.com/

Their Wii advertised has the same crappy white outline around the console, and the $$$.98 price is common through the weekly ad which helps make this a bit more legit looking.

  29. king Says:

It could be real or fake.
Real since it has an SKU number, Madden 10 will be released already.
Real since it says Sept. 6 on bottom of the ad from TheBigManAndGarrett’s Blog/ 9 Lives (first ppl with it)
Real since Sept. 6 is Sunday, Best buy new ads are sundays.
Real since it has the fine print in the buttom and looks like my best buy ad.

Fishy since MGS4 doesn’t have the greatest hits mark on it (Best buy makes mistakes just like
    Palm pre for 99.99)
Fishy since it looks like paper instead of that plastic paper feel
Fishy since the photo, but looks like the one that guy had in the Philippines.
Fishy since its the slim (Sony can’t keep secrets, close with the psp go, but oops QORE!)

Conclusion- Wait until Aug. 17- Aug. 23

  30. SPD55 Says:

Maybe those are trade in prices being advertised? With a recent article claiming that BB is going to test the used game market???

  31. ZemaOner Says:

No. No way! Sony is about to take over the gaming market with prices like that.

  32. Steven Garcia Says:

The original page has been updated.

UPDATE: As many of you have noticed, certain parts of the ad seem fake. Here is what my source told me when contacted:

“I cannot reveal my exact role, however, I can tell you that I work closely with the marketing department at Best Buy. This ad is a mock up at best of the ad to be released in just over two weeks. I cannot comment on the NeoGaf PS3 mock up as this is the material that we’re working with. Many images are often used as placeholders. The final ad will be touched up for grammar, punctuation, etc. Hope this helps.”

  33. kirobz Says:

Sony announced that it takes $240 to make the PS3. I won’t even be surprised if they sell it for $250. MAybe even $200, although they’ll lose another $40.

$300 is a competitive price for the system. But if they lower it to $250, I wonder what MS and especially Nintendo would do.

  34. kirobz Says:

And are those $9.99 games?? *drool*

  35. skullking123 Says:

yea i am wondering how much it cost to the produce slim, since Original PS3 should cost around $270 to make and slim should be less expensive. So I would say they could drop the price for the Slim to around $250. But in my opinion I doubt Sony would do that because the PSPgo is going to be sold at $249. I think it would be ridiculous to have a PS3 and a PSP to have to same price. Seeing that the PS3 is technically advanced in every single way I don’t see a $250 price point coming. $299 seems viable but I kinda wish it would still be less.

Oh and come on $9.99 for games there is no way that is real. That is 100% Photoshop. It doesn’t matter if it has all the legit things a Best Buy ad would have it would still not be that hard to do it. We all remember the whole virtual reality MGS magazine ad. If they can do that this would not be as hard.

  36. nasum Says:

You know those games could be $9.99 as Uncharted has a sequel coming out soon,as does Assasians Creed,Little Big Planet has the game of the year edition coming out,Metal Gear Solid 4 is a greatest hits,Lair is a really old game, and Bioshock has a sequel coming soon too…so Best Buy may be trying to get rid of their backstock of those games before the new ones come out.And selling them at a loss is better then not selling them at all and them just sitting there.

  37. saqib4394 Says:

it says available september 6……………It looks real………..160 gb hdd is believable and the usb ports and card reader look believable…………….the backward compatibility is probably real because SOny recently made a patent that will emulate the emotion engine…….299 is a good price……………Final: I think its LEGIT!!!

  38. Ryan Ordway Says:

sooo hope this is legit. We’ll see come GamesCom.

  39. PS3 Slim - Console Games Forum Says:

[...] zvonuri: PlayStation LifeStyle PS3 Slim Seemingly Confirmed in Best Buy Ad; $299.99 Price Point [UPDATE] [...]

  40. jellybaby7481 Says:

Anyone notice the price as $299.98? .98 not a normal Best Buy price.

  41. capt.fodder Says:

There is no sane reason on this planet for them to put a card reader back into the PS3. All it would do is cost them money. Did anyone care when it went away? I don’t remember hearing people screaming that they won’t buy a PS3 now because it has no card reader.

Four USB ports again? No. No reason. Other companies make hubs – that’s why they took it out.

Then there is the price of the games at the bottom, which would be sold at a massive loss, without question.

Maybe this is a little sour grapes on my side (I just bought my 80GB non-backwards compatible model six months ago) but after Sony complaining about losing money for years, why would they do this? It doesn’t get them any farther ahead…

  42. Devon Simpson Says:

that definatly doesn’t look like a real ad, why look at the spacing on the 299 price, normal BB ads aren’t spaced that much.

The red flag are the games @$9.99

Uncharted ad LBP still have an msrp of $59.99, $9.99 is outrageous and is a huge loss for BB. My stores COST of uncharted an LBP is 52.99 we sell ‘em for $59.99

    @ all

Anyone who says that a retailer doesn’t make a dime off a console is lying, my store makes ~$5 for a 80gb and ~$7 for a 160gb. Same for the 360 by the way

  43. Steven Garcia Says:

    @ Devon

I usually estimate the margin of a product based on the employee price. In Bestbuy’s case, the employee price is equal to cost plus an additional X%. When I said that Bestbuy doesn’t make money on game consoles, I was referring to the instances where I would check both the employee price and regular price, and found them to be the same.

  44. Heavenly_King Says:

Come on; this add is fake. Sony wouldn’t make such a drastic change to the PS3 LOGO. I think the PS3 Slim is coming, but or this add is really fake, or the ones at best buy didnt put the right picture lol.

  45. Rictor Says:

a best buy ad to have actual facts about something, and the picture pre-release, I think not. (sometimes they don’t even have the right box art for games on release day in the ad)

    @Heavenly_King
they did change the PS3 Logo already, they made it fattier (as seen in all the new commercials for games and game trailers)

  49. FiftyQuid Says:

In addition to all the comments above, this has that “it’s too good to be true” feeling. So I have to tag it as fake also. Seriously, it has everything a PS3 user has ever dreamt of in a Slim version with a $299 price tag. When has Sony ever met the communities full expectations? Exactly, never. That should be proof enough.
