According to recently released data, collected by Chart Track GfK International, Germany has overtaken England as the biggest European video game market, on a country-by-country basis. This is quite significant, as England has proven to be the biggest European gaming market for quite some time now.

Videogame sales in England dropped nearly 20% in year-over-year software sales for the first half of 2009. Portugal saw a 16% increase in YoY software sales, while Sweden notched a 4% gain.

A representative of GfK Media Control claims that the lack of blockbuster games has contributed to the ousting of England for the top spot.

“The decline [is] mostly due to a lack of new-released blockbuster games in the UK in 2009″

Right, this is aimed at the idiot who wrote this article! The flag being represented in the picture for this news thread is in fact the Union Jack, which is the flag og the United Kingdom NOT ENGLAND! The UK consists of 4 countries, namely England, SCOTLAND, IRELAND & (my homeland) WALES!

Do Americans actually know of something called geography? How would you like it if us Brits decided to call you 2nd class Canadians? Your lack of world knowledge astounds me, and your supposedly a journalist? You muppett!

Sigh. To be fair, back when the Pilgrims flounced off, “England” did tend to mean everything under English rule. However, to a UK (and European) audience this story would be just as ridiculous if you had written “Scotland” or “Wales” instead.

I am pretty sure you meant “the UK” (as that is what your source reports), so don’t dismiss a Country, a Province and a Principality as not worth mentioning, OK?

It is much like referring to the whole of America as “California”.

  3. Karum says:

@xST-ANGERx – It’s actually Northern Ireland as opposed to Ireland. If you’re going to correct people, make sure you at least manage to get it right yourself ;-P

You’re otherwise spot on though, the article should say UK rather than England.

  4. JackC8 says:

And please quit calling us America, that refers to the the whole continent. We’re the United States of America.

  5. Well, first off, calling us “second class Canadians” would be like us calling you “second class Frenchmen” seeing as how England and France havent won a war without our help in quite some time.

So we must have a good grasp on geography if we have to use to keep someone from overtaking you.

Leave the guy alone for his mistake. It was an honest mistake, it wasnt like he did it to purposely piss you off.

    Easy tiger

You really must have some vendetta against us- all i’m saying is that if there was a picture of the north & south america and the article was about the US, I would understand that the picture was used just as a frame of reference.

This is actually REALLY cool news, and you can literally SEE it. I was on Life w/ playstation yesterday and you can literally see Germany’s abundance of PS3 (lights). It’s pretty fascinating actually. Good article!

  7. [...] it’s leader’s views, with over 60,000 people petitioning against the ban and with Germany overtaking the UK to be Europe’s biggest game [...]
