Full Firmware 3.0 Feature Change List

PS3 firmware 3.0 has just went live on the PlayStation Network, and has some features that weren’t yet revealed up until now. Check out the full changelist after the break.
- Multi-Audio – Audio can now be output to multiple connectors simultaneously. You can set this option under [Settings] > [Sound Settings] > [Audio Multi Output].
- Video Content Playback – During Video content playback, you can now use the right stick to play content in slow playback, fast reverse, and fast forward.
- Settings Descriptions – Now below each setting option under the Settings tab on the XMB, there is now a brief description in small font.
- New Start Up Logo – Upon starting up your PS3, you will be greeted with the new ‘PS3′ Logo.
- Copy/Paste Function – There is now a copy/paste function for the web browser, and messages.
- Internet Connection Speed Test – Check your internet connection upload/download speed. Go to [Network Settings] > [Internet Connection Test]
- Internet Browser Screen Capture Feature – Press Triangle on Internet Browser, then under File > Save Screenshot.
- Custom Remote Play Settings – Manually set a device (such as a PSP system) to be used for remote play.
- New Avatar Support – Support for future additions of PSN avatars has been added. No new avatars have been added along with the firmware. However the support is there.
- “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
- Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
- Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
- PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
- Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
- Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

NO CROSS GAME CHAT?!?!?!?!? DAMN YOU EA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 31st, 2009 at 11:18 PM
dude the friends list does not look good and really the whole XMB is way too big. It makes me feel old
09/01/2009 at 11:01 AM
haha I’m with you a little bit – probably looks much nicer for SD displays now. But mine was clear before in 1080p as I’m sure yours was too.
One suggestion – in the theme menu, change the Font to “Pop” – I think it looks much nicer and I’ve always had it that way.
August 31st, 2009 at 11:21 PM
its probably still being worked on. I can see the trouble Sony would be having with this since developers have to incorporate it in their games since PSN isn’t a service that you have automatically add all the features too. Or so that is my take on it if anyone else knows any better please oblige and correct me
August 31st, 2009 at 11:27 PM
is it just me or did the xmb get huge, feels like i became blind so they had to make it big for then i could se.
umm friends list update wasn’t necessary, cant really say i like it more than how it was previously but i do like the how the selected friend avatar pic gets bigger if on name.
I LOVE the dynamic themes. OMG yes i hope that we will be able to make some of them then my inspiration for custom themes will be reborn.
Status bar looks nice, What’s New is nice as well.
Cant wait to find out about hidden updates

The friends list does a strange refresh thing once it loads an avatar, it moves the status and comment slightly to the left. Looks kinda bad when you are scrolling down your list as it loads once, then re-loads each name and shifts them slightly.
This and there are some video overlay issues when you scroll through the what’s new area and hit circle to exit a video. They have layered “NEW” icons that show through for a half second then disappear. I’m sure they’ll work on it.

$2.99 for dynamic themes FTL! I was so excited for 3.0 but I cannot believe some of the designs got through. Look at how bad that friend’s list looks. You can get rid of the sparkles by clicking classic, but the info bar in the top right is fixed with no option to remove it. The large text though is just awful. I was just complimenting the PS3’s sophisticated, elegant look earlier today and its all gone. It looks like Gaf is with me on this too. Im betting they fix this pretty soon.
August 31st, 2009 at 11:28 PM
all you people complaining about the size of the XMB, are you sure there isn’t a size setting somewhere you are missing?? I’m just wondering, I haven’t updated yet.
August 31st, 2009 at 11:30 PM
haha i love that copy and paste was just thrown in as a “oh yeah, here ya go”
where as the iphone needed a year for that one to be the big “TA DAAAAA”
Sony +1
August 31st, 2009 at 11:33 PM
Actually, copy & paste has been in there for a while now in the Internet Browser
August 31st, 2009 at 11:38 PM
Missed a few.
PS Store now have 4 choices for thumbnail size instead of the previous 2.
And when you scroll through a list (i.e. music videos) a bar shows up on the left showing you how far along down you are.
09/01/2009 at 11:41 AM
Thanks. I’m going to check these out!
August 31st, 2009 at 11:39 PM
There is also a new speed test when you test your internet connection
August 31st, 2009 at 11:41 PM
love the lay out of the new 3.0. Very nice indeed
August 31st, 2009 at 11:43 PM
Compare trophies is blazingly faster now.
09/01/2009 at 11:42 AM
and how about how quickly the firmware downloaded! If it includes all previous versions still, they must have just had more preparation this time
August 31st, 2009 at 11:48 PM
Oh and trophy percentages have been altered. i.e. I had 86% in LBP, but now it’s only 84% even though I have the same trophies.
August 31st, 2009 at 11:53 PM
Bigger XMB is LAME…. it feels as if i lowered my resolution… not to mention when u select on things from the XMB the background gets blurry….I feel really old now :/
August 31st, 2009 at 11:56 PM
“No new avatars have been added along with the firmware. However the support is there.”
LOL

For the person that asked if you could lower the font size, common sense would suggest there would be one, but there isn’t. If you have an HDTV you will actually think its running in 480i when you first see it, but its not, and it looks awful.
September 1st, 2009 at 12:52 AM
trophys now only count what is on the disc, and the Plat no longer counts as a % which i <3
Dead space 2.0 = 76%
Dead space 3.0 = 91%
only missing 1 trophy, in both examples =3
09/01/2009 at 11:44 AM
maybe they’ll add a separate percentage bar to account for DLC?
September 1st, 2009 at 12:55 AM
I’m glad they made everything larger. I can actually READ everything now.
September 1st, 2009 at 12:56 AM
It’s so ugly ;_;
September 1st, 2009 at 1:33 AM
Woow … SONY like no other but i was think if thy bring something biger than thes
September 1st, 2009 at 1:55 AM
Friends list is just… ughh… whoever thought that looked good should be shot
Also, one other thing I’ve noticed, if you’re scrolling through a big list of things on the XMB (ie friends, videos etc.) a thing will come up at the left of the screen to show how far in the list you are. One of the better things about the update.
09/01/2009 at 11:45 AM
the concept is ok, but you’d think the gray would be more transparent.
September 1st, 2009 at 2:02 AM
Friends list is terrible as well as bigger font….
September 1st, 2009 at 3:01 AM
@ Zoibie
That scrolling thing is pretty cool, now that you mention it. I just don’t think it offset what was lost.
September 1st, 2009 at 5:34 AM
OMG whats happened? My xmb now looks so huge and nasty
& why are my friends now in grey boxes?? Looks nasty too! Dam u sony LOLOL i want my old ps3 style back NOWWWWW lol…
September 1st, 2009 at 5:43 AM
SEEN IT AND CRIED EVER SINCE thanks…….LOLJust looks awful fullstop! Couple of new features are OK but the xmb looks nasty and the friends list looks a mess:(!
September 1st, 2009 at 7:52 AM
Oh dear – mixed reactions – I am not looking forward to updating this tonight….
September 1st, 2009 at 8:17 AM
Is it too much to ask?
IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK?????????????????
Is it too much to ask, for music to be arranged by Artist->Album->Tracks?
They took the time to duplicate the Store icon and put an iPlayer bookmark link on the XMB (big deal)… but the PS3 still can’t be used as a viable media centre because of its DREADFUL UI.
I’m now looking for some other kind of media centre, because I’ve finally run out of patience with Sony.
September 1st, 2009 at 8:51 AM
Cannot believe they haven’t added a 2X and 4X zoom feature to the Blu-ray player. Every DVD player I’ve ever had in my life had 2X and 4X zoom, and it would be even more useful with high-def media – so no zoom.
And how about letting us organize photos into these things called “folders”? I mean, not that I don’t enjoy loading a hundred folders worth of photos onto my PS3 – one folder at a freakin’ time – but it would be kind of nice.

Someone please tell me you can switch off the ticker!!!
Oh, and this —> Internet Speed Test, I cannot wait to try this. Maybe now I’ll see how much bandwidth my PS3 is actually using compared to the rest of the peripherals on my network. I’m betting it is at least 1/2 the speed if not 3/4 the speed of the rest. Do they have a speed cap on their downloads from the PSN Store.
God, from the sound of it I’m going to be boycotting firmware 3.0. More than half the comments here are “it is absolute hack”. Fuck animated themes. It’s not worth it wrecking the interface I know and love.
I feel bad for people buying new PS3 Slims with 3.0 pre-installed. I hope they have an internet connection so they can upgrade to 3.01.
09/01/2009 at 11:49 AM
Couple of things.
Internet Speed test isn’t its own option. It’s in the network connection setup.
You can’t boycott firmware 3.0 unless you don’t want to play online. It’s mandatory to upgrade and required to sign into the PSN.
Lastly, PS3 Slims don’t come with 3.0 pre-installed. They will have to update as soon as they are plugged in for the first time.

From the Japanese site (does this look like they added subfolders for vids/pics on external devices?):
General
■フォルダー階層 ■ folder hierarchy
[フォト]、 [Photo], [ミュージック]、 Music, [ビデオ]で表示できるフォルダーの階層が増えました。 [Video] increased in the hierarchy of folders can be displayed. 記録メディアに次のようなフォルダー構成で音楽データを保存している場合、2階層目のフォルダーまでがXMB™上に表示されるようになりました。 If the folder to save the configuration data such as: music, recording media, two of the hierarchy to the folder of XMB ™ is now on display.

this is my first post on this site…I’ve trolled for a very long time…but FW 3.0 just enrages me. Let me be clear I am a ps3 fanboy but Sony continues to baffle me this generation. It’s like 2 steps forward and 3 back…they spend all this time trying to pretty errything up (sometimes destroying…see friends list & XMB)…but they don’t really fix the major things that should have been in the system from day and we have been askin for forever. I thinks it’s time to officially call for Eric Lempels head….who actually thought the new friends list actually looks good…I think I know what they were trying to do but it has fallen flat..SMDH

WELCOME! And good feedback. Looking forward to more from you.
September 1st, 2009 at 1:50 PM
I know it isn’t listed, but my Divx playback has improved. It seem a lot clear and a lot smoother.
I was watching a TV series and went back a few episodes and they do run better….or I’m just losing my mind.
September 1st, 2009 at 3:35 PM
3.0 is fine , just fine.
September 1st, 2009 at 3:46 PM
@StalkingSilence
About the internet speed connection… so does that mean I cannot test the speed?
Good news about the Slim not coming with 3.0.
I can live without being online until 3.01 or whatever comes out. I don’t play many online FPS or multiplayer. I’m a singleplayer campaign type of person (Yes we still exist).
09/02/2009 at 11:03 AM
k, just watch out as many new games coming out will have the newer firmware on the discs. So you might eventually be forced to the bigger XMB. Wouldn’t it be better if you did it on your own terms?
September 1st, 2009 at 3:53 PM
I guess cross chat didn’t make it.
September 1st, 2009 at 4:22 PM
Ya left out in game music, you can now choose the music in a limited number of games, the only ones I can find are Skate 2 and Marvel Versus Capcom 2 though.
09/02/2009 at 11:10 AM
that’s been a developer option for a long time. There are lists we have created listing all of them. It’s becoming the standard out there. The first SDK to allow it gave you access from within the game. Then they implemented XMB music in-game and allowed devs to update and include that.
September 1st, 2009 at 4:37 PM
yess we def. should get ingame music… as far as the friends list..thats prolly the biggest thing i hate as well as far as the changes…there are a few nice features but for all the nice new features they added, they also took away a few nice ones from before as well…yaa my ps3 doesnt look as crisp anymore.. thake that darn gray border around my friends off and stop worrying so much about the darn sparkleys in the back!! can we all start talking about the next firmware update now?

I for one actually like the new status indicator. I like that the swirly in the top right corner has been replaced with an analog clock. I love the animated theme support. I like the sparkles. I don’t mind the extra store icons. I love that the battery indicator has been moved. I like the reverse and fast forward with the right analog stick.
Just to end this post on a positive note, I also love how fast trophies load now.
I absolutely hate the gray boxes in the friend list. I want to tear my eyes out every time one of my friends sends me a message, because I make it a point to respond to messages, and doing so forces me to look at those awful, hideous, abhorable gray boxes. I loathe them.
Just to end this post on a positive note, I also love the trophy load speed.
