Earlier this year Sony conducted a God of War survey to determine what fans would want in a God of War III collectors edition, in the survey an overwhelming amount of the community wished for the previous God of War games to be available on the PlayStation 3.

Now, Sony has announced that this Holiday Season they will release the God of War Collection for PS3, containing both God of War and God of War II in 720p HD form. Both titles have been remastered with anti-aliased graphics, running at 60 frames per second as well as trophy support for the games. Yes, you read that right. God of War and God of War II with full trophy support.

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA ANNOUNCES
GOD OF WAR® COLLECTION, A NEW COMPILATION OFFERING FOR PLAYSTATION®3
Exclusive God of War® and God of War® II Blu-ray Disc Compilation
Available This Holiday Season
FOSTER CITY, Calif., September 1, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced today a new and exclusive PlayStation®3 (PS3™) offering for the critically acclaimed God of War® franchise, God of War® Collection. Scheduled for release this holiday season, God of War Collection will feature reworked versions of both God of War® and God of War® II on a single Blu-ray Disc™ at full 1280 x 720 resolution. Both critically acclaimed games, which were originally developed for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, have been remastered with anti-aliased graphics running at 60 frames per second for a smooth gameplay experience on the PS3 system. Additionally, the Blu-ray Disc compilation will bring PlayStation®Network (PSN) trophy support to the franchise for the first time (included for both games). God of War Collection offers substantial value to PS3 consumers, the compilation of both best-selling games costing just $39.99 MSRP.
Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment, Santa Monica Studio, the God of War series brings epic mythological battles to life with stunning graphics and an elaborate plot that puts Kratos, the triology’s main character, at the center of carnage and destruction as he seeks revenge against the Gods who have betrayed him. God of War® III is scheduled for release exclusively on the PS3 in March 2010.

“We are excited today to announce God of War Collection,” said Scott Rohde, vice president, Worldwide Studios America. “Our fans spoke and we listened; thanks to our partnership with Bluepoint Games, fans and newcomers to the series can experience the epic God of War and God of War II saga in stunning 720p on PS3. This Blu-ray Disc compilation brings Kratos to PS3 even earlier than expected.”

God of War Storyline
Set in the dark world of ancient Greek mythology, players take on the role of Kratos, a Spartan warrior. Plagued by the nightmares of his past, the ash covered warrior would do anything to be free of his debt to the Gods and the memories that haunt him. For ten years he has labored for Olympus, now on the verge of losing all hope, the Gods have given him one last task. Destroy Ares, the God of War. Armed with the deadly chained Blades of Chaos, Kratos will have to overcome armies of mythological monsters, legions of undead soldiers, and amazingly dangerous and brutal landscapes.

God of War II Storyline
God of War saw Kratos, a mortal warrior, set upon an epic quest to dethrone a God. But his journey did not end there. In God of War II, Kratos sits atop his Olympus throne, as the new God of War – far more ruthless than Ares ever was. To end his continued torment, Kratos must journey to the far reaches of the earth and defeat untold horrors and alter that which no mortal, or god has ever changed… his fate. God of War II sets an epic stage for a devastating mythological war to end all wars.

Who knows, maybe Sony will do this for every franchise that was successful on PS2.

  2. AWEOME!!! thats a now must buy collectors edition. March cant come soon enough.

  3. Awesome news, loved it on PS2 but as long as it doesn’t cost the full retail price I probably get it

    edit:
Thanks, missed that, hopefully that means it’ll be £25

  4. wtGp says:

$40 is a nice deal and they added trophies which is awesome.

  5. @ ejsponge61

Hopefully. The first thing I thought of after reading this was a Team Ico collection before Last Guardian comes out. I mean an upgraded, cheaper and new copy of Ico that I could play on my PS3! Must try not to get my hopes up though.

  6. Dan Massi says:

Yeah, definitely a Team Ico Collection as well.

  7. Danlord says:

I am definately adding this to my christmas list :D I am really glad this is actually real rather than speculation and it definately is going to be a hit, after looking at the 8 pages already listed on the PS blog it seems im not the only one who likes this….

Unfortunately, i don’t think they would remake every successful franchise that was on the PS2. The reason they’re doing this is because God of War III is going to be a huge title and some people, like me haven’t played the previous titles and would like to brush up on the storyline. It would be really nice for games such as Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, Final Fantasy X, Parasite Eve II to be remastered in HD but i don’t think they’re in the same situation as God of War.

They added a huge bonus for upscaling it with anti-aliasing to 720p at 60 frames per second but I don’t see this being a simple task to do, and adding trophy support would have been quite a thing to implement. I would and I’m sure everyone would agree that if they did PS2 games remastered in this way it would sell really good, but I cannot see them doing it just yet.

  8. Danlord says:

Have a read of my comment on http://playstationlifestyle.net/2009/08/24/why-free-ps2-compatibility-wont-happen/ and then look at what they’re doing with God of War, I think bundled with my idea on that ps2 bc post and then the news about this would be an exciting thing for the PSN and for us fans.

  9. PapaZUmbi says:

wooo where do i have to pay???…….thats nice

  10. SolidCake_ says:

yes, please do ICO & shadow too.

  11. Karum says:

The trophy support along with the games being remastered makes these a must buy for me, just hope it comes to the UK also.

  12. JackC8 says:

Sweet! Will definitely be getting all three!

  13. Im sooo glad they did this..Never got to play them..I will buy this..

  14. Robotron says:

    Yeah that’s another purchase.

  15. dbigfeet says:

damn it. This is another must buy. Now can I get Syphon Filter collection going?

  16. Fu__ing awesome. The only thing that will top this is if they actually include a playable GOW3 demo as previously rumored.

  17. HavenXL says:

Damn it. Beating God mode again. Oh, wells. This is good news

  18. Brent says:

I would have bought this but I already have them for the PS2. I will get it if the AA, 60fps, and 720p makes a big difference though…

  19. DGR8Mc187 says:

It will make some difference , but I remember when I bought my launch 60 gig and the best game coming out when I had my PS3 was GOW2 so I played it on the PS3 and it still looked great.

  20. Sneeches says:

trophies, hell yeah count me in.

  21. johnma says:

Not to rain on anyones parade as I’ll be picking up these myself having never played any of the GoW series. I just think its funny that 90% of the jerks on the ps3 forums whine about how they hate the idea of backwards compatibility and say that if they wanted to play a ps2 game they’d buy a ps2. Bet you they’re all going to be buying a GoW ps2 remake though arent they?

  22. unicronic says:

I think this is quite possibly as big an announcement as ANY game for Sony this year. Two of THE best games EVER now coming to PS3 albeit souped up with trophies.

I can’t wait to hear “Athena, you conspire against me” and that AWESOME soundtrack.

    Oh S**T I think I’m going to hyperventilate, yup I was right……BUMP

  23. kirobz says:

Oops! This release just made to my top3 to buy. Just under Uncharted 2, and Borderlands. GoW in HD, they’re giving us more taste before the release od GoW3.

  25. Well I know one thing. If you would like to have them consider this for more games, this one must sell a lot of copies.

  26. @Johnma I don’t like those kind of people either. I for one love the idea of BC. In fact it was the reason I bought the 60GB. It was also the reason I did not buy Nintendo products after the Super and went to Playstation.
