Recently it was revealed by Polyphony Digital, the developer of the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo series, that the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 would feature headtracking. Many wondered exactly what this meant, and how it would be incorporated into the gaming environment.

Shortly after the announcement, Polyphony Digital stated the following:

“…the movement of Cockpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D. The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye)”

Essentially, this technology utilizes the PlayStation Eye to track head movement while playing Gran Turismo 5. When the player moves the head, the ingame cockpit view reflects that exact movement. This technology basically allows the user to look to the sides of the car without having to press any buttons.

As a side note, this functionality is achieved using the PlayStation Eye, so in order to experience this you will have to cough up about $29.99 for this PS3 webcam. Thankfully, the PlayStation Eye is being incorporated into dozens of games in the near future, and will also be a requirement for the highly anticipated Sony Motion Controller.

I wish it would track my hand movements too, so I could flip someone the bird when I zoom past them.
That’s not meant to be a joke btw, I’d really like to have that feature.
The head moving thing is pretty cool, I would like to try it out.

This is amazing. Finally a peripheral with a useful application. I’m actually quite excited to see this pick up steam.

seems a little more than gimmicky-

Agree..bird flipping needed. Not too worried about owning PSEye I got one for cheap ($35 for the Eye of Judgement pack…..not that I ever use it).

  5. very nice should pick up a PS Eye

While this sounds cool, you’d have to have a screen that surrounds your head (or at least covers the left and right of your head). Without that, when you look to the left and right, you’d be taking your eyes off of the screen (so, in other words, you could do this with every single racing game before this).

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I guess they will have to greatly exaggerate the movement… like if I move my head 10 degrees, the view on the game moves 30.
Anyway, I’m so happy to see this (and EyePet and the motion controller), because my Eye has sat there with nothing to do for about a year now.

GT 5 is going to suck balls compared to Forza 3.

Dont you play with tv’s surrounding you? Come on you have to step your game up. It is all about 1080p, 3d, and 360 degree view. Any true gamer has at least 4 tv’s surrounding them.

*hopefully you could hear the sarcasm*

So I turn my head away from the TV to look left, but my eyes stay on the TV.
Look at your monitor and quickly turn your head left and right.
    Silly.

TVs are big enough now that you can wrap a peripheral image on the the last 10-15% of each side of the screen (left and right) – like a fish-eye lens. It would look weird and distored at first, but I am sure you will get used to it.
