PS3 Review – Bannco FRAGnStein Controller

One feature most shooter based controller have is autofire. FRAGnStein will not disappoint as you can enable and disable autofire on the fly. Simply press and hold the function button and click the shoot button to toggle on and off.  Autofire rate can be fine-tuned in the configuration utility.

The movement wand is weighted nicely and rests comfortably in the palm.  The analog directional stick reacts very true to the DualShock heritage, down to the forgiving yet responsive L3 press.  The d-pad has a familiar responsive feel as well.  The left shoulders could be a bit easier to get to the ergonomics here appear to prefer symmetry. The edges are not sharp at all so this did not make the wand uncomfortable use, even in longer play sessions.

With two wireless items it is unclear which item is represented in the battery indicator when you press the PS button.  The unit requires two AA batteries and yes, batteries are included.

One thing the FRAGnStein is missing is wires.  This provides unhindered experience, which is a different approach from the FragFX v.2 from SplitFish. FRAGnStein is a 100% compatible PlayStation product complete with a PS button and SixAxis support.

The following games were tested and overall worked well if not excellent. Multiplatform games seem to require less tweaking overall. Surprisingly SOCOM works very well with this controller.  Killzone 2 will require quite a bit of tweaking. Some experimenting with the in game sensitivities and the mouse sensitivities will be necessary.

Battlefield 1943
BioShock
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood
Far Cry 2
FEAR 2: Project Origin
COD: Modern Warfare
COD: World at War
Killzone 2
SOCOM: Confrontation
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Resident Evil 5
Resistance: FOM
Resistance 2

The FRAGnStein suggested retail value is $79.99. Factory product information and support is available here.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Final Score

Great construction that will last a heavy duty cycle.

Smooth high resolution mouse outfitted with turbo-fire.

Attentive support that is available and have already provided requested features.

4 out of 5

Impressive! I just ordered the FragFx v.2 to try it out. When will the FragNStein be released for public purchase?

  2. Wow, this would be such hacks for online games. Nice review.

  3. marcindpol says:

if it is hack i hope it will be banned, if not hacked still think it should be stoped as it would be not fair for DS3 users:)

Still waiting for the next FragFx with bluetooth to come out, but nice to know about this product.

I don’t know why people cry “hack” or “cheat” when a device like this comes out. To be honest I wish all PS3 games would support the mouse and keyboard (UT was excellent for this) because I do not like playing FPS with a controller. It just feels stiff and it does not respond as quickly as I would like.
For FPS it is the only way to go, just because it’s a better control scheme doesn’t make it “evil”.
Do the same people think steering wheels should be banned from online race games because they give you an unreal advantage over others?…even though they are the best controller and the most natural for racing games? hmmm?

Anyway thanks for the review. I will keep an eye out for this product.

I don’t care, I’ve been wanting this bad boy for almost a year now.

  6. HavenXL says:

I thinks I’ll stick with a controler. No need to spend the extra cash for something like that in my opinion.

  7. Sneeches says:

god that’s one ugly mother, I’ll stick to my DS3 thanks.

  8. Bought. All the functionality of the fragFX V2, but with no wires.

  9. GunaK says:

    I’ll check this out.

  10. I have it and it runs great. It does take time to config each game. If you are playing many FPS at the same time, then it might be to much. I seem to play one FPS and other non FPS shooters so this is not a problem. The utilty is great, any key can be mapped. also the mouse works great for a wirerless mouse if you have a laptop.

I played socum ,reistance 2 and infamus using this mouse. Killzone is not that great , but that is mostly built into the game itself.

If you have a few bucks to spend and want the option of having a keyboard and mouse experince on the PS3, then i say go for it

I will gladly answer any questions

  11. Sweet review, Richard. I’d really like to see how well this works on Civilization Revolution.
