In the currently on-going PAX Expo, Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig made some bold claims regarding the studios’ latest game, Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves. Already Uncharted 2 is shaping out to be one of the biggest games of the year, however, these claims may catapult the game to even higher accolades.
Naughty Dog’s first game on the PS3 happened to be the phenomenal, critically-hailed title, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. The developer stated that game utilized roughly 30% of the PS3′s potential power.
The sequel to one of the best titles on the PS3, according to Hennig, not only surpasses that 30%; it blows it away. Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves has maxed out the PlayStation 3. Yes, you read that right. Maxed. Out.
These are certainly high claims, and, at least here with the staff at PlayStation LifeStyle, are extremely excited to get our hands on Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves, when it hits North American store shelves, October 13th.

MAXED OUT!!! WOW! that is some pretty high claims! but this game will surely impress
This just gets more excited to try out the public demo! That machinima mode looks sick!
Yeah the machinima mode looks hella cool.
On another note: Shouldn’t psls be recieving their review copy soon?
I can always count on naughty dog to come out with an incredible game, along with sucker puch and insomniac.
good thing l got that multiplayer demo code for next week because l really want to play this game now
Cool wtGp hit me up on PSN Mc187 we’ll have to play a few rounds together.
I want this game to be amazing, but I don’t want that statement to be true. If they have in fact MAXED OUT the PS3, that means that this game is the best, or very close to the best, game we will ever see on the system. I don’t want to see that happen yet.
@giese095
not necessarily, all it means they maxed out the ps3 in their own way. With the right set of programming/software you can make another game even better still utilizing the same amount of power.
@giese095 – On a side note though, Naughty Dog uses 100% of the SPE’s on this game but they utilise them in a certain way, with immense HDR, realistic shadow maps and water with destructible physics so it is pushing the hardware in this way, yet look at Gran Turismo 5 and no word of pushing that to its limits. yet it runs 400,000+ polygons per car, native 1080p at 60 frames per second and so far we know incremental damage.
All Im saying is they utilise it in a different way, I can certainly believe that Naughty Dog have pushed the hardware to the limits, but Im sure other developers push the PS3 to its limits eventually but in a different way, take a look at God of War III and im sure the devs would make the same claim as Naughty Dog to up the marketting which they could say they push the hardware to the limits making it impossible on other consoles etc…
Some games can be heavy on shading, lighting and destructible physics where others can be of rendering multiple objects, motion capture animation so all im saying is, YAY they have pushed the PS3 to its limits, expect other companies to do so in the future, but in a similar way or even completely different.
I just really want this game!
@Danlord
Yeah, but with those different/newer ways of making games, the limits are pushed further and further until the system is dead or upgraded. You won’t find a game that maxes out the system. Look at the XMB getting faster. They find ways to speed it up a bit here and there. Theres many more ways to makea game than to speed up a menu, so a way will be found. What they mean to say, is that they’re giving us the best they can offer right now. Naughty dog themselves will be able to make a better game in time, it’s just a marketing gimmick. That being said, this game will kick all kinds of ass, and I will be getting it.
Nah, I don’t think so. I think you can still do better. Pretty bold claim though.
they say that now but when uncharted 3 comes out they will say that that game is at 100 percent and uncharted 2 was only at 70 percent not tryna sound like a hater cuz im in love with this game and i only own a xbox ( THATS FOR NOW UNTILL UNCHARTED 2 COMES OUT A WEEK AFTER MY B-DAY) but thats just how these big developers like EPIC GAMES BUNGIE INFINITY WARD AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST Naughty Dog WORK to promote these well deserving triple a blockbuster as sony likes to call it
its pretty funny, you guys remember Alex Fry? the games senior engineer of Burnout Paradise statement:
“You always find new ways to do things, the constraints lift. Not just with a new console generation but with every game you do. Whether it’s a sequel or whether it’s a new game, you learn to do things differently… better. The constraints go away because you learn. While it’s nice to say you’ve maxed something out, there’s not really any point.”
and
Burnout’s technical director, Richard Parr: Parr says that any company who thinks they have “maxed out a system” , “It means you’re out of ideas”.. which i think in Naughty dogs case, its the same.. im sure with there next game, they will do even BETTER.
@Dan Agree! Although it seems that devs could still push some more. All I care is that when devs push the PS3 to its limits, it’s us gamers who are winners. I so love it that i chose the PS3.
That’s really exciting but I bet there will be many, many more YLoD reports (Yellow Light of Death). Screw it… my 3′s still under warranty
