Apple Thinks They’re Better Than Everyone Else

Apple has been considered a contender as of late in the handheld market because of both the iTouch and the iPhone. Seems they have gotten to the point to where they feel confident enough to not only talk down on the PSP, but also the Nintendo DS.

According to Apple’s Marketing VP Phil Schiller once a consumer plays a iTouch/iPhone title they don’t feel the need to turn to a PSP or DS anymore for gaming, that in fact Apple’s devices make both handhelds look less “cool”. He then goes on to say that the prices of the games are too high on both handhelds.

Here is the direct quote for those interested:

When [DS and PSP] came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play a game on the iPod touch, you think ‘hey, these things aren’t so cool any more…

We’re talking about 25, 30, 40 dollars a title. The kids can’t afford those titles. Worse isn’t the price, it’s the buying experience.

  1. This just adds another reason why I don’t like Apple.

  2. I never did understand this. Just because people are willing to throw 99 cents at something they play for 10 minutes and then delete, you think it is better? A better business model perhaps, but to try and say that the quality is there is simply talking out of your ass. The Apple app store is full of trash and you can’t find anything worthwhile in there beyond a couple of the most popular titles.

If I’m Sony/MS/Nintendo I’m not worried about Apple – you aren’t losing customers to them. These are people that were never going to buy a real game machine in the first place.

I like apple’s ipod’s and all but they’re not good at making games. Playstation is so much better. Nintendo sucks

  4. Hus90 says:

well i for one love Apple and i love Sony and Nintendo too, and if im not mistaken sony did the same thing when the ps3 came out, and so does nintendo, and so does microsoft, this article fails…

  5. Just you wait Apple. Won’t be long till PSP Minis are released and all your greatest games get ported not only to the PSP, but with controls that turn it into an actual game, not a gimmick. At the same price point as well. :P

You won’t be talking out of your apps for too much longer. How ahead of the curve can you be, if you don’t realize the often talked about handheld console is releasing a store that’s every bit as cheap and as good of a buying experience as you’re providing.

I’m gonna laugh when I see people tethering their PSP to the iphone to purchase a PSP Mini game because they don’t wanna screw around with the crap touch controls and want a REAL gaming platform.

  6. Jeneric says:

well case in point… i havent got a psp cause of my iphone so although this is an arrogant statement… there is some validity in it.

  7. Apple is really good at making average crap seem very appealing to people who don’t know anything about what they’re purchasing…

oh, and btw- I read the title of this almost blurted out “DUH”

  8. Dixon says:

    meh
    sony>anyone

atleast psp’s dont go around exploding on people

funny thing is that I’m using my iPod touch to reply to this post and the only app I have ever bought was assasins creed *puts head in head *

  10. iCubPro says:

A little arrogant? perhaps. But there is truth to it, and it’s not like Sony, Nintendo, and the other one don’t say the same things about their console.

I was considering a PSP at one point before I got my iPhone. Then I got my iPhone. Then I discovered the wonderful world of gaming on it! Civilisation Revolution, would have cost me £25 on the DS, cost me £2.99 on the iPhone and it’s being hailed as the best portable version of the game.

Having a quick flick through my apps now, Ive got Peggle – 59p, Toki Tori (a Wii port) – £2.99, Bookworm – £1.99, Flight Control/Harbour Master – 99p each. Just yesterday I purchased Monkey Island for £2.39! And there are a ton of other games that I got for 59p-99p and every game that I’ve purchased has had hours poured into it.
Yes, there’s a lot of fluff in the store, you could easily delete three quarters of it and nobody would care, but it’s not difficult to find the gems and they’re worth every penny.

You can *not* say that the iPhone/iPod Touch isn’t a fantastic gaming device. It’s been a game changer in more than just the mobile phone market.

  11. xST-ANGERx says:

wow apple ur right! would i rather use a psp or ds to play games (that use proper controls or buttons and have a big fixed screen) or play crappy games made up of a few megabytes, tilting ur i-gadget-thingamabob all over the place in front of ppl who will look at u like ur some kind of thalidamide with a twitch!

to me, when i see the apple insignia, i think of music. thats all, just music. not games machines. not games. not fun. just music. i will never associate apple with anything but!

  12. See people here’s the thing. For small tiny fun games like shooters, and games like snake and pacman, ya an Iphone could be a great thing.

But at the end of the day, you buy a PSP for games that the iphone could never handle. Stuff like Guitarooman, DJ Max Portable, Crisis Core, Kingdom Hearts, Megaman, Disgaea 1 and 2, and dozens of other games that require a more tactile kind of feed back, and can’t be played when your fingers COVER UP THAT MUCH OF THE SCREEN!

How are you going to play Monster Hunter on an iphone? Well you can’t. So it’s more about the kinds of games you want to play, than the device you’re actually playing them on. Same is true with the PSP the DS and every other gaming device.

  13. Natiej85 says:

Let me start off with, DS games have sucked hard up to date. PSP is going the digital distribution route which will produce more cheapy games like those on i-media. Oh yeah, but they’ll look better. And Marc Ecko pissed me off with that Dexter move, shouldve been a PSPgo launch title but he went the bitch route.

  14. The iPhone is a terrible gaming device. I am glad this guy loves their products bur he is way off based. Next he I’d going to tell me that people prefer the iPhone to a ps3

  15. giese095 says:

I don’t understand how Apple feels they are in even in contention. The DS and PSP have full games which make them worth $25+. Saying the iPod Touch and iPhone are better is like saying a computer from the mid-90′s is a better gaming PC then my current system. That is the difference between Apple’s Apps. and Nintendo’s and Sony’s games.

  16. Hus90 says:

ppl need to realize, that most companies do this, stop bitching about it…and they make a point about psp games and ds games being expensive, theyre just giving casual gamers an option to play games easily and cheap.

  17. Hus90 says:

oh and i forgot about the multi touch technology, its implemented very well in some games, unlike the ds :P , and hey if it werent for the app store games, sony wouldnt release minis, so if you ask me, i call bs on that…

  18. wtGp says:

there is the minis coming for the psp u know

  19. beta55 says:

    @cappt.fodder

    Fully Agree.

Although the design of the Itouch may seem simple and attractive its really a piece of garbage once you actually have it in your hands. Just a phone. Everything else is just mini-games that get boring in a matter of minutes. And I thought PSP gaming is bad, seems to be changing with titles like Soulcalibur, MGS, Assassins Creed. Itouch? Lol.

  20. kirobz says:

Kids could not afford anything! It’s the parents who buy it for them. How does playing in iPhone or iTouch better than a PSP, or yet a DS?

  21. Yeah, but can it run Crysis?

  22. Sorry were a little more progressive here at Apple where it’s all about the brand identity more than functionality. Ipod is a music device first and foremost not a gaming platform for hardcore games
