I have a original 60gb ps3 launch and im having the problems. I freeze all the time. Mainly in load screens. Been playing Demon souls and MW2 been having the problems right after the update. Anyone know how to go back a update?

I am having the same issue as the original post. It doesnt matter what game i play, for that matter after it does freeze on a game/demo. I then cant get it to recongize on my tv for ten minutes, other times it freezes up on me at the load of the ps3 other times while I am selecting my profile. In other words its freezing up on my at all stages of the PS3. I have tried three out of the four recoveries that are in safe mode and that has not helped. I cant get my ps3 to stay on long enough for it to back up so that I can do a factory restore. I dont want to lose all my data, especailly if its still not going to fix the issues. I have heard even if I restore it, that the 3.01 will still be on it, does anyone know how to get a older firmware onto the PS3?

I’ve not had trouble with any PS3 games, however, I have had a problem with a PS Classic.
Silent Hill being it, before 3.00 if you played it and you shot your handgun there was a loud buzzing noise that wouldn’t go away until you equipped another weapon. It did that again in the last place I was at, and the rifle was barely making any noise. Strange thing was after I beat it, my handgun wasn’t causing the old crazy noise… So I dunno if it’ll do this again later or what, but I think 3.01 had to do with it acting up.

No, after cleaning it, still the same issue. Here is what I did.

1.) Ran the Maxell Blu-Ray cleaning disc twice (seems to be just rebranded dvd disc honestly)
2.) Played Eye of the Tiger in RB2 all the way
3.) Swapped in Beatles RockBand and it died on the first song about mdway or so.

So it’s not that the laser is dirty in my opinion. I cleaned it twice, dust and vacuum my place regularly, and the games seem to work for 5-10 minutes given the above. It then freezes. I can bring up the xmb. However any attempt to exit the game causes the ps3 to do nothing, eventually triple beep, and the blue light will stay on while the green one flashes until I shut the entire unit off from the switch in the back.

Anyone have any good guesses as to other things to try? If not, Im likely to just buy a slim and then try repairs one at a time on this unit whenever I have time here and there.

I actually looked up how to clean the lens and there is a few blu ray cleaner discs. I picked one up and Im testing the results now. I should be able to let you know within 10 min.

Game freezes are more than likely caused by a faulty laser. I’ve had to replace mine 3 times in 2 years. Blaming it on 3.01 sounds more like coincidental then solid proof.

@michealja, people would be more than willing to take your defective launch PS3 off your hands. Put it on EBay if you are not into trying to fix it yourself. I might just buy it myself.

A friend had a similar problem and I bought it off him for 50 bucks. Unfortunately for him, the thing was just full of dust as he never cleaned it. It works perfectly. These units are sophisticated pieces of electronics packed into the smallest box Sony could fit. Poor ventilation and dust are the #1 killers of PS3′s.

Guess what , Your freakin bluray drive went out AGAIN Sony ” fixed” my drive and it only lasted 3 months , just long enough for it to be out of warranty get your laser replaced AGAIN and this time use the laser from the 40 gig ps3′s and you will have no problems my friend.

i’ve had zero problems with 3.0 so I didnt even bother with 3.1
btw I have one of the original 80 gig systems
